santa ana river Fishing Report 2025

Good evening everyone, This morning started early with most anglers fishing a dropper loop before grey light. Fishing was slow with a handful of quality 20 pound class yellowtail being caught with a few nice sized grouper coming over the rail. As the morning progressed, fishing started to pick up with anglers hooking fish on flylined baits, the dropper loop, as well as the sliding sinker rig. A couple of these fish were unwilling to leave their rock homes, and were able to wrap the lines in some of the jagged bottom structure before breaking off. As the sun rose in the sky, we were able to pick off a couple more of these fish before we found the right school. A little before noon, we settled into a school of fish that wanted too bite a little bit better. We were able to keep these fish around the boat for the rest of the day, and would hook a handful at a time as they bit in flurries from 2-7 fish at once. Majority of these yellowtail were in the 20-25 pound class and came off the flylined sardine or mackerel. One 50lb class grouper made its way over the rail which fell victim to a sardine flylined on 30 pound test. With the day winding down, we decided to point the boat toward the kelp zone in order to give ourselves an early shot at some more fish in the morning.  The ride going up last night wasn't good, although I can't say it was awful either.  It was just your average windy rough ride up the line.  I'm just not used to it, that's all.  The weather for the most part these last couple months for me has just been so good.  It doesn't matter because the weather got good again for the important part which is the fishing.  And we took advantage of it.  We found our dorado kelp.  The dorado were small to big and they were plentiful.  It was our first dorado kelp of the year.  Finally. Though we've had plenty of other specie to keep us busy this year. If you know me you know I'm all about the competition so I like to make searching for kelps fun.  Today I challenged Mark to a kelp off which means the person who finds the loaded dorado kelp wins.  He found it and of course I couldn't be happier about it.  It may be the only thing I'm glad to lose to.  Of course he wanted me to tell you all about it.  He finally beat me. It was the cherry on top of this wonderful trip.  Another one in the books.  We're headed back to the barn all fat and happy.  Fat from too much eating and happy with all the fish we caught.  We'll be dockside tomorrow morning at 6:30 and yes, we will be heading back out to sea.  I'll be taking the LA Rod and Reel club out fishing for a couple days.

 Good fishing again today in the local tuna grounds it sounds like.  Let's make it one more tuna trip for the year before it's over.  Our October 3rd and 6th trips are both for sure goes.  Let's, and by that I mean you, make our September 26th and 29th trips a go too.  Come fishing!  My baby can be without her dad for another week if it means she gets those shoes she's been begging me for.  5 months old and she's already begging for shoes.  Holy Toledo.
     

Real good fishing today in the morning on 70-125 lb. tuna. The afternoon seemed like it was going to be slow, but low and behold late in the day we got what we think is the biggest cow of the season so far. It taped out at 364 lbs. We see what the scales say.

July 20
  Good evening folks.  Turn around day today.  In and out.  Unload, fuel, cherish baby, load, load and go.  That's how it goes down.  The bait receivers was fun.  Turns out all that rain we got may have effected the sardine we get there.  It's speculation but things weren't right.  We got some bait though.  Some good sardine and some good mackerel.  Yellowtail bait.  Tommy is back on board for this trip and he's decided to start off tailing tomorrow.  We're going to tail our butts off.  We'll see how it goes tomorrow but we most likely will get our tuna on the day after.

  Getting to know your crew: I've told you Mark is trying to bring his weight down.  Well Justin is in the same mode so I had an idea.  They're both throwing 50 bucks down.  He who loses the most weight by October 1, or the closest date we have a scale to October 1 takes the money.  Now that's a battle.  We have a couple of hungry crew members for sure.

  My rivals are on board this trip.  Many San Francisco Giant fans.  Uugh.  It just so happens that a 3 game series between them and my Pads start tonight.  I'm actually listening to the game now.  4-2 Pads in the 7th.  Now I know this is a fishing blog but it's a travel day.  You love it anyways.  I'll talk fishing tomorrow.

We have a few open spots on this weekends 2.5 day charter to Colnett and surrounding areas! We had good signal on yellowtail this last trip, and ended up with 55!! To go with wonderful rock fishing and shallow water lingcod!! These trips are set to early depart at 5pm for maximum fishing time!! The San Diego checked in on March 16, with 25 yellowtail, 6 bonito and  100 rockfish catches.  Yo yo jigs have been the top producer so far but every school has boiled on our chum.Encouraging sign of fish for 1/2 the day today. Couple decent shots on all the popular presentations. We will try again tomorrow.

This trip will depart on Saturday night the 5th and fish Sunday the 6th of April. The weather is supposed to be getting much better and shouldn't be a factor on the trip. Ling cod season is open and we will be looking for seabass as well. Please call Sea Landing for reservations at (805) 564-6753.

Polaris Supreme Trip Report 09-06-2016 Hello everyone our morning started off with something different around the boat as we started our day of fishing for the bluefin tuna. What was it? Squid!! And yes we scooped up some to use for bait. sure enough we put it to good use with our first bluefin tuna of the morning being hooded on it. With live squid and sardines we did well today. Like Art Gutierrez landing a bluefin tuna over 90 pounds after a long and hard battle. most of the fish were 60-90 pounds. And yes we did have several heartbreaks which is part of the game with fish of this size. But we did land our fair share today. Great fishing all around.
