salmon university Fishing Report 2025

Suggested tackle for 7:00-4:00 local 3/4 day trips. (1) A 25 or 30 lb. outfit to fish fly line sardines , sliding egg sinker and squid and a lead head and squid. This outfit can also double as a light dropper loop rod for shallow water rockfish. (2) A 40 or 50 lb. outfit. This will be a heavy dropper loop rod for targeting yellowtail , white sea bass and halibut down on the bottom. (3) A deep water rock cod outfit. A 20 size reel filled up with 65 lb. spectra and a 7 ft. rod stiff enough to handle a 16 oz. sinker. If you only want to bring one rod a 30 lb. outfit would be your best bet. TERMINAL TACKLE (Hooks) a pack of size 2 live bait hooks for fishing anchovies and small squid strips. A pack of size 2/0 live bait hooks for fishing live sardines and live squid on an egg sinker. A pack of size 4/0 live bait hooks for fishing live squid on your heavy dropper loop rod. A few long shank rock cod hooks may be usefull but not mandatory on the days we fish deep. (Sinkers) an assortment of sliding egg sinkers from 1/8-1 oz. an assortment of torpedo sinkers from 2-16 oz. Sinker size will be determined by depth of water and strength of current. (Lead heads ) An assortment of "banana" shaped lead heads from 1/2 - 2 oz.

Wow what a great first day fishing. Kicked it off on some great quality tuna. Cowboy came in first with a 288 pounder and Roger had a tight second with a 255 pounder. Most of the rest had fish around the 175 lb. class. There was also good fishing on fish 30-40 and 60-100 lbs. Our weather is absolutely gorgeous. We did stop long enough to enjoy some carde asada tacos with fresh, homemade guacamole and salsa.And dinner was mahi mahi and shrimp. Thanks for checking in.Tommy

Come fishing on November 30ths 7 day. We are all locked and loaded. Wahoo leaders are crimped, tied, and twisted. The tuna gear is on and ready to grab. Even the people who have giant Grouper on the mind have their heavy gear and big hooks tied on ready to flyline a Skipjack. We feel very ready and anxious to start fishing. Hopefully they cooperate . Aug. 14
 OK.  So once again, we were one of the lucky boats today.  Two days in a row, we're carrying the horseshoe.  We had arguably our best stop of the year this morning.  A month ago we had a day where we caught a larger quantity of yellowfin than we caught today and ultimately we caught more tonnage that day, but the quality/quantity of these yellowfin this morning were second to none in 2015.  Holy Toledo.  Same grade as yesterday.  About a 25 pound average.  One fish hold down.  We feel blessed.  It was not for everyone today unfortunately but fortunately we were one of the lucky ones.

 The afternoon stunk for us though.  It got very crowded in the zones that had fish and it made it tough to stay in those zones.  We kept wanting to leave but we wouldn't see anything when we did so we would end up back in the crowd and that fish wouldn't bite well.  It was a long afternoon but much easier to handle with one full well on board already.

 The weather was great.  Just like San Diego weather because that's where we were.  Tomorrow we're going to be concentrating on bluefin tuna.  We've caught 18 of them the last couple days and they are beautiful.  We want some more.  The boats that fished it this morning were not happy about it but we're hoping it was an off day today and they want to float tomorrow.  Timing is everything and so far our timing has been right on.  Let's keep this ball rolling.
    

Polaris Supreme Trip Report 09-06-2019 The Polaris supreme departed today on Bill Stephens annual eight day trip. We got a nice early start and are hoping to arrive at our final destination in a few days bright and early. We have a great group of guys/and one girl heading south excited about the signs that Alec saw last trip on the simpatico trip. No pictures yet will save that for when we start catching something. The goal at the beginning of this week was to find a new area of fish. Last weekend we started to see signs of our area drying up so on Monday we decided to go looking for new fish. While our fish count did not show success (1 yellowtail) I was very happy with the day because of all the water we were able to eliminate. On Tuesday we went out with 17 anglers and put what we learned on Monday to good use. Our fish count for the day was 20 dorado and 48 yellowtail. The dorado we caught were 10-20 pounders and the yellows were 5-15 pounders. Wednesday and Thursday we sat at the dock due to bad weather. Fridays fish count for 30 anglers was 42 yellowtail. Capt. Ray took over on Saturday and came back to the dock with 27 yellowtail. The next 4 days will determine what we do with our schedule. If the offshore fish are still available in November we will stick with our 5:30-7:00 offshore schedule. If the offshore fish go away we will switch over to 7:00 - 4:00 local fishing. I will keep everybody posted.

POLARIS SUPREME TRIP REPORT 09-12-2020 We departed today on Bill Stephens annual 8 day charter. We got a nice early start with some OK looking bait. after seeing the great trip Alec had with the Simpatico charter we will be heading south for the trip. Weather rolling down is great. ~~Trip Update 08.12.2015

 Good evening friends.  Today was our final day to get some lines in the water. After last night, we weren't sure what kind of time we were going to have to fish. It was a tiny bit bumpy to say the least.  Well, it wouldn't be a long range trip without a little bit of choppy seas, at least it wasn't til the last night of the trip. All and all, we had great weather during all of of our fishing time.  We did however make it to where we wanted to be about 1030 am and kicked the anchor over the side to use up hat bit we had left.  It actually turned out to be a pretty bust late morning. Not long after we dropped the pick, the yellows came up showing their presence right away. If you wanted your fix on tails for the trip, this morning was the time.  It was still tthat great 16-22 lb grade that we saw down south. Not at all a great wway to end a pretty darn good trip.   It got to be time to point her toward San Diego and get everyone home to see their families. Time to break down the tackle, scrub the boat and finish the trip with all of the fishing stories that have happened over the last 5 days.
