rock river Fishing Report 2025

Today was another example of the fact that when targeting Bluefin, we are playing by their rules.  We stopped on fish all day and managed to land 15 fish from 30 to 70 lbs and one 45 lb Yellowfin. Staying at the rail and fishing either a 40 lb flyline rig, a 50 lb colt sniper or sinker rig was the best bet today.  Come out to enjoy the ocean, be prepared with your tackle.  Keep your fingers crossed that you are here when they let their guard down a bit is the name of the game.

Capt. Jodie called in with this trip announcement for the Apollo. "We have an overnight trip leaving from Sea Landing this Saturday night, fishing on Sunday. The cost is $145, we will be targeting White Seabass. If you are interested in this trip give me qa call at 805-963-3564.

We departed today on Larry Brown's annual 10-day trip with 22 fine anglers. Most are repeats as they join Larry each year, but we are delighted to have a couple of new comers. We are in good weather and are happy to be driving out of the sooty smoky air. The group is excited after seeing Drew's great catch from the last trip. He had Dorado, Wahoo, those big cow Yellowtail and some Yellowfin with the jackpot weighing in at 160 lbs.! We are also getting reports that fish are moving in a new area and want to bite. This is all good news. So I will close for now as we get ready for dinner of filet and lobster with vegetables and a baked potato. Thanks for checking in and we'll update again tomorrow.

Big Bluefin on the Brain! Were able to scoop up some big Flying Fish on our way up the line! These flyers will be the perfect size bait for the local giant Bluefin Tuna. Recently the hot ticket has been: Heavy Flat falls in the dark, frozen Flying Fish on the kite, and trolling the Yummee flyer. We individually wrap our flying fish in saran wrap so they do not stick together when we freeze them. These ones are ready and on stand by for the big ones!

We got a little bit of something throughout the whole day. Everywhere we went we got yellowtail, but no real bug hits. Our morning bite had great quality but not as many as yesterday. Our weather is still good because of the island. Tomorrow we will be in open water on patties looking for dorado, tuna and yellowtail. Great fresh yellowtail and shrimp scampi for dinner. 10 bluefin tuna 2 yellowfin tuna. We are seeing fish from 10 lbs to over 200 pounds. A 25 lb bait rod, a 40 lb bait rod and a 50,60 or 80 lb rod is recommended. If you do not own the proper tackle. Seaforth is renting 50 lb rods with a 2 speed reel. These rental rods have already conquered a lot of our fish.

Fishing was not wide open today. The guys topped off with the yellowtail for the trip. They also had good fishing on the dorado on a couple of different kelp patties. Our weather continues to be great. As we travel home to make our 6:00am arrival tomorrow we will be dining on Pedro's exquisite prime rib dinner. Come see us at the dock or better yet book a trip and come out with us. Tomorrow we'll be heading out on Tom Chaparro's annual 5 day, 18 passenger, lite load charter.
