Hi friends. We arrived to the tuna grounds this morning a little after breakfast and with boats already broadcasting catches of Bluefin for the morning, we made our way out to the deck with heightened sense of excitement. Immediately upon entering the area, we had a couple of hits on the smaller grade Bluefins before a lull set in for most of the late morning all the way up until after lunch when we managed to find a few schools and had some action for the remainder of our day before we had to call it a trip around 1600. Throughout the day, Yellowfin tuna jig-strikes kept us awake and we also caught a few mixed in with the Bluefin schools. We ended our day with a respectable score but a few lucky boats managed to find a lucky school and ended up having a good day on the smaller short-fins. The potential is here for future ventures down this way and we also saw one spot of the bigger models so this area has us our full attention and we're looking forward to getting back down here as boats who remained in the area are reporting catching fish all the way up until dark.

With that, we put a bow on Eric Rogger's five day trip and are currently traveling up the line in beautiful, flat calm seas. Our ETA is 0700 hours tomorrow morning and we'll be returning back out for Ron Heil's five day trip. We'll report with you tomorrow. Take care.

Hi friends. We slid into our destination first thing this morning and immediately sent the bait-catchers down to snag some Mackerel and snag some Mackerel we did. The Mackerel proved very useful today as we had a very good morning on the premium-sized Yellowtail. We also hooked a decent amount the stock grade fish in the 15-22 lb. range but all in all we had nice mix of the 25-35 pounders to go along with the stock grade fish. After a couple Halibut drifts, we made our way back to the Yellowtail area and finished up our day with a nice bite and with that, we ride off into the sunset.

As for our next destination, we're busting a move to an area of fish up the line and this particular place is called "what we've been waiting for". Numerous boats are reporting very good afternoon scores on Bluefin with a handful of Yellowfin tuna to add some color. The Bluefin are a mixed up grade and it sounds like the range of those fish are small all the way up to 60+ pounders with some Yellowfin in the 15-25 lb. class. It was hard to get a true report from the guys as most of them were in long drifts with multiple fish hooked up and the captains had to remain on deck to deal with the melee. The cliff-note reports were all we needed to hear and we left the Yellowtail biting to get up there and have a chance at the tuna we've been desperately seeking all season. The setup is prime, we feel it's our time, and we're screaming up the line. We're out. We'll report with you tomorrow afternoon. Wish us luck.

Good evening Polaris Supreme subscribers. Our expedition for kelp paddies was a great success today. I don't throw the term "super duper" around lightly, but we had ourselves a super duper day. It wasn't find-a-glory-kelp-and-be-done-with-your-day type fishing but more of find-a-bunch-of-kelps-and-piece-together-a-solid-day type fishing. Our only tuna situation found us looking at a breezer of Skipjack and we only tagged a handful of Dorado but our Yellowtail count was mess of numbers on the fish count board when all was said and done. The size of the 'tails ranged from 1-8 lb. "shakers", which were all released, and a healthy 14-18 lb. grade with a handful of 20 lbers in the mix. It was never wide open but we stayed busy throughout the day all they way into dusk. What was more impressive to me was the abundance of kelps and the size of the kelps. There were some real beauties out there and the beautiful sunny, light swell/wind conditions made for prime glassing and we never went more than twenty minutes or so without finding a kelp. All in all, awesome day. We're stoked and we'll be making a move throughout the night to hunt exclusively for trophy-sized Yellowtail, White Seabass, and maybe a Halibut drift or two will be on the agenda.

Hi friends. Picking up from the previous report's update, we slid into the Yellowtail Island in the late afternoon and did some scouting around before we located the 'tails and with a flurry, they hit us hard and like a light-switch, they shut off. What gives? The grade of fish was beautiful with most of the fish being in the 16-22 lb. range. We did some more poking around the Island and around sunset time, we found another spot that bit all the way into dark and we finished up our day with bent rods. To sum up the day, it was fantastic. A couple hour drift on our Yellowtail/Dorado kelp in the morning was a great warm-up and when the Island bite was complete, we made the decision to go check out a new area for tomorrow. The new area is a kelp-paddy zone where Yellowtail, Dorado, and Yellowfin tuna have been caught and the weather forecast looks good for tomorrow. We'll be motoring hard throughout the night and we'll be there when the sun comes up.

In closing, our weather conditions were prime all day and along with the fishing we enjoyed today, we're hoping for a repeat on Monday. Eric Rogger's crew is sound asleep and anticipating a full day of fun tomorrow. Let's hope that the fish/weather don't disappoint. Wish us luck.

12:45 August 7th Morning update

We were late on getting the report out this morning and before I send this out, I just wanted to inform y'all that this morning, we stumbled upon a glory kelp on our journey. We picked up a few boxes full of 12-20 lb. Yellowtail and 8-12 lb. Dorado. It was darn good fishing for a couple of hours for a 50/50 mix of flats to jacks,and once it dried up, we continued to make way towards Yellowtail Paradise. We'll be there in the early evening time, that is if we don't find another glory kelp. More to report this evening. See ya.

Good evening everyone. Today we disembarked on Eric Rogger's five-day fishing adventure along with Eric's closest friends. After topping off our sardine supply, we began our southerly trek down to the fishing grounds while Chef Barry served up some king-sized cheeseburgers with all the fixin's. The rest of the day was spent rigging, napping, and with the completion of our tackle seminar, our day was complete and we're hitting the racks to rest up for tomorrow's activities.

Our game-plan for tomorrow is to do some scouting around as we keep on-course to our next destination, which if all goes according to plan, won't happen because we found some offshore species to stall our progress towards the Yellowtail grounds. The Yellowtail grounds kicked out some pretty good scores in a different area today and we'll be giving it a check tomorrow. Like I said, hopefully we arrive there late because we stumbled upon a loaded kelp, loaded porpoise, or any other types of offshore-pelagic species. Our weather is great and we'll report with you tomorrow.

Capt Ryan Bostain from the San Diego 3/4 day trip called in with a trip report from todays trip. They decided to head west from the Coronado Islands in search of some offshore fish, with the report of the tuna racing up the coast. We started they day with a stop on some really nice grade Bonito from 5 to 10 pounds and left them biting after we had 55 on the deck. We some mixed schools of Yellowfin and Bluefin and ended the day with 20 Bluefin and 36 Yellowfin that were all between 10 and 35 pounds. We had mostly beginner anglers on the boat today, very few had ever fished offshore before. We will be heading back out there tomorrow and until they go away. You will need a 20 pound bait rods, today they we biting 20-40-50-60 and even 80 pound line. If you come out with us the perfect setup will be a live bait from 20-40 pound set up, some size 2 and 2/0 hooks for either the Anchovies or Sardines. Come on down and get in on the action.

Still heading down here. Had to go a little further than planned, but we did manage to put our first fish on the boat. Here we have Wild Bill Walsh with the first Wahoo of the trip!

Captain Mike Pritchard called in this morning with an audio update from the Tribute out of Seaforth Sportfishing in San Diego, CA. We ended up with 11 Bluefin Tuna around 50 pounds. The weather has been great and we are seeing a very good sign of fish.

Good evening. With all of the life around the boat last night, we never managed to hook a fish this morning so we made a move and relocated the good sign of fish from yesterday. All in all, it was a very slow day up until the afternoon time when we got on a big breezer of smaller fish and had a nice little flurry on that smaller grade of fish. They really responded well, boiling within ten feet of the transom but for whatever reason we only managed to hook and land a handful. That was pretty much our hot action of the day. We saw a couple good spots of fish today but the Bluefin were Bluefin and it was a struggle to get a bite. There's potential for some decent hits in this area but for now, it's only for a couple of lucky boats and today, we were not a lucky boat. Sometimes, that's just how the cards fall.

With a beautiful load of Yellowtail in the fish holds and an annoying load of kelp flies everywhere else, we put a bow on the 2011 Paul Hess five day trip. Our utmost gratitude goes out to Paul for once again putting together a stellar group of folks and continuing to bring them back year after year. No matter what type of economic situation or what type of fish we catch, this group has a great attitude and they come out here to have a good time. Also, thank you to Sandra and Dave Lafferty for bringing some delicious food, especially the Cherry cobbler. We'll see y'all next year. Go Giants...not.

Hi friends. We finally made it to the hot Bluefin grounds in the afternoon and as soon as we arrived, the bite shut off. We saw good life and a few schools but we never saw the whites of their eyes. There is potential to scratch out a day here as the few boats that were in the area all day had a few fish to show for their efforts. Based on that, we rigged up and tossed out the sea anchor and will be drifting offshore all night. There is a ton of life around us right now with squid, sauries, and birds all around so hopefully with all of this life, we'll wake up and pick away at some shortfin's. Wish us luck.

Good evening friends. Yellowtail fishing aboard the Polaris Supreme was outstanding today. From right after breakfast until the late afternoon, we were pulling on 'tails in the 14-20 lb. class. Massive breezers, meter marks, and color spots were repeatedly located and we enjoyed steady catching all day long in beautiful weather. We had a very entertaining day and the evening time found us on the hunt for "premiums" which we managed to boat one right around 35 lbs. Hot rigs today was 30 lb. test, fly-lining a sardine with a J-hook tied on. No fluorocarbon, no designer circle hooks. A Yellowtail's mouth is like sandpaper, so there is no reason to waste the money on more abrasion resistant/expensive line and a hook that is designed to be set in the corner of the mouth so you don't get chewed off by a fish with teeth. With the exception of cow tuna fishing, we see more fish lost on circle hooks than landed. Granted every type of tackle worked today but time after time, we see just a simple 30 lb. rig filled with mono and tied up with a J-hook catching more fish than a rig with fluorocarbon and designer circle hooks. For Yellowtail fishing, it's an unnecessary expense when a so called "cheap rig" will get the job done just as good. Hey, when you step foot on the Supreme, you can fish with whatever type of tackle you wish. But take it from the people who are out here everyday, when it comes to Yellowtail fishing, keep it simple. Outfit yourself with mono and a J-hook and save that money that you would've spent on the fluoro/designer hooks because you're going to need to put it towards your fish processing bill. Get what I'm saying?

So that is all. The gang has had their fill on Yellowtail so the decision was made to venture offshore to focus on tuna fishing for the remainder of the trip. A couple of our community boats had an OK day on the Bluefin grounds so we're looking forward to seeing if we can't track down a few schools and add to our beautiful catch of Yellowtail before trips end. Our weather is a little bumpy but everyone is too tired to notice, they're out and so are we. Wish us luck and we'll chat with you tomorrow.

Hello friends. We began the hunt for Bluefin tuna early this morning by shutting down in the gray light on a school of tuna and just as soon as everyone woke up to begin fishing, they vanished. So we followed suit and the hunt for greener pastures commenced. It took us a little while to get a school located but when we got it located, it was a good one. We immediately saw fish boiling up good all around the boat and we hooked a few right off the bat. We landed a handful and we lost a handful but what we did land were a beautiful grade of Bluefin in the 25-35 lb. range. With the massive surface show 360 degrees around the boat we decided to get the kite out. Multiple fish attacked the baits but missed the hooks and after that, all we could do was watch them boil within ten feet of the baits and turn their nose away from our double sardine rigs. We watched the show for a couple of hours before they bailed and it was a slow day from that point on. We did pull a couple of nice Yellowtail from a kelp paddy and we even trolled up a smaller grade Bluefin tuna later in the day. Not too shabby considering a lot of boats in the prior weeks have been calling in zero's for fish counts, so we're very happy with what we caught and we'll be back on the tuna grounds after we do some Yellowtail fishing. A couple of boats in our long range community had a pretty steady day on smaller grade Bluefin in another area so we'll keep our ears open to that developing situation. Like I said, we're going to go do some Yellowtail fishing as the bite has been hot and we're looking forward to finding out for ourselves just how hot the bite is.

So that's it. Our weather is fair and we're in excellent company with Paul Hess and his good friends. We'll be in the zone first thing tomorrow morning and we'll report back to you tomorrow. Take care now.

Hello friends. We're back in business as we departed on our annual Paul Hess five day trip this morning. Paul has been putting together a great group of anglers for the better part of a decade on the Supreme and we're happy to see all the familiar faces that he's brought aboard this year. Our bait loading went smoothly and we've been traveling in calm weather ever since leaving the harbor around lunch time. With boats spread out in different areas along the coast and offshore, we're taking our time in deciding what our game plan is. Part one of our journey will be on the hunt for Bluefin tuna tomorrow morning as one of our companions in the long range fleet saw good sign and had an OK day on the shortfins today. We'll begin looking around in the morning and we'll see if we can't boat a couple of tuna fish tomorrow before we worry about part two. Wish us luck and we'll report back to you tomorrow.

Polaris Supreme Trip Update 11-26-2019 We spent the day looking for Wahoo mostly, but ended up with only a handful. We had absolutely phenomenal Marlon fishing and some pretty fair Dorado fishing throughout the day. The Wahoo has definitely eluded us this trip. Another day of absolutely beautiful weather good food and hanging out with a bunch of good friends. I just noticed that the last two days we only had pictures of Rudy and John. Neither one have been fishing before so there definitely get the lions share of attention as far as photos. Today we mix it up with some of the other guys who have been hanging in the background. We're going to spend tomorrow heading up the line toward San Diego to try to be the Thanksgiving storm or at least part of it. We will definitely be in a day early and all of you leaving on the seven-day on the 30th be down there bright and early at 5 AM. We will be fueled loaded with groceries and ready to rock 'n roll right away. The Polaris Supreme Crew

Today was another example of the fact that when targeting Bluefin, we are playing by their rules.  We stopped on fish all day and managed to land 15 fish from 30 to 70 lbs and one 45 lb Yellowfin. Staying at the rail and fishing either a 40 lb flyline rig, a 50 lb colt sniper or sinker rig was the best bet today.  Come out to enjoy the ocean, be prepared with your tackle.  Keep your fingers crossed that you are here when they let their guard down a bit is the name of the game.

Capt Mike Pritchard from the Tribute called in an early morning report on behalf of Jay Kinsley making his maiden voyage and they are off to a great start. They have over 50 mixed tuna by 8:30am on board and some hanging and was very busy and could not talk long.
