st mary`s Fishing Report 2025

The Apollo fished at San Miguel Island today for limits of Rockfish and 18 lings plus one nigh Halibut. The SFR Apollo trip is scheduled for next weekend. We are a go and only have 7 spots as of the time of this post. Sign up now by clicking on fishing trips.

This past week was all about yellowtail and warm water. 40 - 115 yellowtail per trip with a sprinkling of dorado sums up the past week. I attached a photo of the terrafin chart for our area to show you guys all the warm water. Anything over 70 degrees is considered warm and as you can tell we have plenty of it. As a matter of fact finding the cooler water has actually been the key to catching these yellowtail. The most common question this week was "when are the yellowfin going to show up". While I don't have a crystal ball to tell you exactly when they are going to show up. I can tell you that they have made a major northern movement over the past week and there has been yellowfin tuna caught as close as 60 miles. 73 yellowfin tuna 3 skipjack tuna. We were minutes away from bailing on our area after our first 3 schools swam away without biting. The words from my old boss Ed McEwen “never leave fish to find fish” once again proved to be spot on. A cooperative school late in the day made all of our frustration fade away.

 Today was mostly a travel day for us as was planned. We did stop late after 4:00 in the evening for some yellowtail. It took a bit of looking around but we eventually found some action. It wasn't exactly what we were looking for but it kept us busy for a while. 8-15 pound yellowtail is what we caught. We released most of what we caught but we tagged some of the 14 pounders we were getting. The fish bit until we left it to try and find a better grade. We never did but we didn't have much time left to look. The weather was definitely on the choppy/windy side of things today but it didn't bother us because we were rolling down with it so we didn't notice. We'll make a move tonight and fish first thing tomorrow targeting D, all of the above. See you then.
 

Aug. 20
    Another fantastic day out here for us.  We had a great nights sleep.  The boat just gently rocked us to sleep just like a baby.  We tried for a gray bite but only caught one.  It didn't take long looking for a school before we found one.  We short stopped 15 yellowfin and then it didn't take long to find another deal and that one was good for a 2 hour drift.  When that dried up it didn't take long to find another one and that one was good for a 2 1/2 hour drift.  After that it was lunch time and we're pretty much done with the yellowfin.  We spent the last half of the day looking for bluefin unsuccessfully.  We're going to head for some new grounds.  And by that I mean some water I can't remember ever fishing in.  We have reports of some bluefin schools so we're going to check it out.  We'll be there first thing.  I'll let you know.

    The weather today got interesting.  It stayed pretty much windless through out the day so it remained similar to a lake, but around 9:00 in the AM it started dumping rain on us.  And I mean dumping.  Everyone on board scrambled for there rain gear.  I got to try out my new Aftco raincoat and it worked great.  During the down pour the lightning that was around got pretty darn close so I had everyone go indoors to wait it out.  It didn't take long to pass and we continued fishing and catching.  After that it stayed dry the rest of the day.  The boat got a nice fresh water rinse.
                                    

 

We departed today on the "Let's Talk Hook-up" charter with Rock Cod Rick and 21 anglers. Things sound very promising on the albacore grounds so that is where we are headed. The weather is sloppy and we are hoping it will lay down. Tune in tomorrow for an update.

Capt Ryan Bostain checked in from the San Diego out of Seaforth Sportfishing, we went out with 43 anglers today and ended the day with 120 Yellowtail. Today they were from 12 to 28 lbs, with an average around 15 lbs, today they bit mostly on the surface with either a flylined bait or surface iron. We did also manage to get some on the yoyo jig, the ocean is alive down there. Come on down and get you some, make sure you bring a rig for every occasion. See you on the boat.
