Polaris Supreme Trip Report 08-13-2016
We had another fun day today! Today was a little different though most of the fun was catching fish not traveling. We had very good yellowtail fishing all day, we started off right at the crack of dawn with flurry fishing which progressed into a wide-open bite for several hours and then flurry fishing again! After a midday low it all started up again through the rest of the day. We were catching fish mostly on bait. Fly lighting was number one with dropper loop fishing coming in a close second. We didn't have a lot of jig fish but that probably was contributed to the fact that we didn't have anyone fishing jigs most of the time. Weather is excellent and were hoping to do this again tomorrow.

We arrived today at Fisherman's Landing at 7 am after a nice smooth ride last night. After weighing up the jackpot we were pleasantly surprised with the fact that the yellows were larger than we thought. Joe Beck took 1st place with a 42.6 lb yellowtail. Mike Grella took 2nd with a 41.3 yellowtail and Tim Walsh followed it all up with the 3rd place 39.6 lb yellowtail. Congratulations to our jackpot winners.
The Polaris Supreme will be departing next on Thursday afternoon on a private 1 1/2 day charter sponsored by Optima. We still have openings on our 3-day departing July 10 as well as other trips throughout the summer. Give Susan a call to get on board.

Good evening. A sloppy ride last night was forgotten about around 1000 hours this morning as what was a crummy ride a few hours before turned into a stable ride for most of the day. With the bucking seas last night we only had an hour or so of actual stop time if we got into anything special but it never happened. We trolled through beautiful water today but were unable to locate or catch anything. Lack of bait species in the water is probably the reason we didn't see much and hopefully, it's just a matter of time before everything gets in order and we get a shot at some offshore action. We'll see.
The gang broke down tackle today and got caught up on sleep that a bouncy ride deprived them of. The crew scrubbed the boat and took care of a few maintenance projects before days end. Our traditional fillet and lobster dinner was served promptly at 1800 hours and a bow was put on the 2011 Beck/Wagstaff party. We had slow fishing for a couple days to start off the trip but we finished up with a bang and all in all, we call this trip a success. We're grateful for the guys being a great group to have on-board regardless of catching fish or not. They are a fun bunch of passengers to hang out with and for that, we thank them. We also thank Joe Beck and Mal Wagstaff for year after year putting together quite the mix of personalities that make this trip an excellent one to start the season out with.
We're heading home in nice weather and we're prepared for a date with docks tomorrow. Our ETA to Fisherman's Landing is 0700 hours Tuesday morning and we'll be back out Thursday night for a day and a half trip. Time to get local. Chat with you then, good night.

Our partnership with the best live bait boats in the world allowed us to catch 126 yellowfin from 15-25 lbs and 13 bluefin from 30-50 lbs. a 20 lb rod with a #2 hook, a 30 lb rod with a #1 or #2 hook and a 40 lb rod with a #1 hook is all you need. Please be sure to have at least 150 feet of mono on top of your braid. Shock absorption is very important when fighting a fish on a small hook. Fish the heaviest line the fish are willing to bite.

Good evening. We spent our morning getting the Supreme and her passengers out of the weather for a bit, attempting to locate some coastal species for a morning while we gave the offshore scene a rest. We didn't quite connect like we were hoping but we did manage to catch a few yellowtail for our efforts, so all was not for lost. We made the decision to get back offshore and see what was going on and what was going on was scattered jig strikes on yellowfin tuna with some bait stops to go along with it. There is still some good hits to be had out here on both bluefin and yellowfin but we just didn't locate the right batch of fish. For tomorrow, we'll be fishing a little bit closer to home as we'll give it a try for a few hours and then have to book it for home. Wish us luck and sorry for the short report, the weather traveling up isn't the best conditions for typing but it's still okay to traveling. It could be a lot worse but we don't want that. Hi friends. Nothing like a two-day trip, pulling on 50-75 lb. Bluefin tuna beyond normal two-day ranges. It just goes to show the value of these two-day trips leaving around noon, fishing all day the next day and then arriving back to San Diego in the late morning. Everything worked out for us on this trip and while fishing for the majority of the boats out here was tough (lots of schools were located but did not bite), we got lucky and found a really nice school of those beautiful Bluefin tuna's. We drifted all afternoon on this particular school and if you wanted a chance to hook one of these trophies, it wasn't rocket science to do so. It was some good fishing for a while there and although our casualties were high, we managed a very healthy score on the Bluefin along with a few "Cedros-grade" Yellowtail off of a kelp. We somehow managed to give every angler on-board the experience of a five-day trip in one day. Just going to show everyone, the advantage of these two-day trips.
So that is all. We'll be arriving to San Diego tomorrow around 1100 hours and we'll be taking a few days off before we get back on a couple of short range trips. Be sure to be on the lookout for more of these two-day trips in the near future. Thanks for checking in.

Hi friends. Big, beautiful 25-45 lb. yellowfin with a few handfuls of those beastly bluefin is what was on our plate today. We had a couple of good drifts in fantastic weather that made our day just dandy. Everybody is really amazed by this quality grade of yellowfin and I'm personally amazed that crewmember Mark doesn't have his own television show. Networks are missing out on what a goldmine following Mark around with a camera would be, 24/7. Some people might think that they're paying a healthy sum of money to come out fishing on a long range boat but I look at it like, people are paying a lot of money to come spend a few days with Mark Clark.
Anyhow, here is a short recap of our day: good morning (0545 hours), good breakfast (French toast, sausage, and eggs), good trolling rotations, good fishing, good weather, good sunshine, good lunch (chili), good fishing, good afternoon snacks, good galley assistant/chef-in-training (Shawn), good friends, good times, good dinner (roasted turkey with all the goods), good showers, good squid making, good night. It's alllllllllllll good. We allllllll bundle.We'll chat with you tomorrow.
