Tommy Rothery docked his Polaris Supreme at Fisherman's Landing August 22 after the season's best tuna trip to Guadalupe Island. There were 24 anglers aboard the first Dan Heil Memorial trip. "I felt like he was there with us," said son and chartermaster Ron Heil. "He would have really enjoyed this trip." Tuna fishing was excellent for the group, so much so that Rothery was able to give the spot up to Art Taylor and the Searcher. "We had plenty of tuna," said Tom, "all we needed. The sharks got some of them." Steve Patterson of Grants Pass won first place for a 103-pound yellowfin. "My best tuna ever," he said. Patterson used a sardine on a 4/0 ringed Gorilla hook tied to 40-pound P-Line and 65-pound Izorline Spectra backing, on an Avet LX reel and a Rogue Rod of seven feet. "He slaughtered me," added Patterson. "I couldn't get my new rod off the rail. He tore up the cork and the diamond wrap." Don Pieper of Arroyo Grande was second for a 72.6-pounder, and Buddy Bales of Spokane, WA won third place, for a 72.2-pound yellowfin tuna. The season's 12th wahoo from Guadalupe was included in the catch.

Aug 11

I'm not sure how i feel about today. I know at 3:30 I felt real bad. Extremely frustrated to say the least. 2 of the boats we were fishing with found schools early in the morning and drifted with it most of the day scratching away at the bluefin the whole time while we drove around seeing nothing. The other 2 boats we were with connected around 1:00 in the afternoon and were gettin um, so I was feeling sad and mad. I told Mark to switch gens and broke out the volt meter to see if we had a short somewhere. I figured there had to be a reason we were the only boat not drifting. We were looking in the same water with the same machines trolling the same jigs but just not seeing it. The truth of the matter is there was nothing wrong with the boat, her captain or the crew. Sometimes your just that guy. Sometimes your front row and sometimes your nose bleed.

OK, enough wining. The day turned out just fine. At 3:30 we found a boomer school and drifted on the 25-45 pound bluefin almost till dark. Everyone caught at least one with top dog Phil boating 6 of those beauts. The weather was great in the morning but increased wind velocity throughout the day and it was pretty choppy at dark. So with the weather coming up and our bait situation worsening, we're heading down to fish for yellows and try for some macks.

~~Trip Update 08.12.2015

 Good evening friends.  Today was our final day to get some lines in the water. After last night, we weren't sure what kind of time we were going to have to fish. It was a tiny bit bumpy to say the least.  Well, it wouldn't be a long range trip without a little bit of choppy seas, at least it wasn't til the last night of the trip. All and all, we had great weather during all of of our fishing time.  We did however make it to where we wanted to be about 1030 am and kicked the anchor over the side to use up hat bit we had left.  It actually turned out to be a pretty bust late morning. Not long after we dropped the pick, the yellows came up showing their presence right away. If you wanted your fix on tails for the trip, this morning was the time.  It was still tthat great 16-22 lb grade that we saw down south. Not at all a great wway to end a pretty darn good trip.   It got to be time to point her toward San Diego and get everyone home to see their families. Time to break down the tackle, scrub the boat and finish the trip with all of the fishing stories that have happened over the last 5 days.

Aug. 15
 Our day sort of reversed from yesterday.  Today it was a super slow morning that led into an action packed afternoon.  We looked for bluefin tuna this morning.  We started off in the zone where it had been in the weeks prior, but like yesterday, it wasn't around.  We caught one 12 pounder on the troll all morning.  We looked around there and in other places I thought it might have gone but we never saw an meat.  We went through one area where at least we were seeing little dabs of the BF but it was diving off on the meter.  We could tell it didn't want it.

 So we kept tracking around and ended up close to a possible yellowtail honey hole. So we took a look and that's exactly what it was.  For the rest of the afternoon till dark we stayed pretty steady on 12-25+ pound yellers.  It was good fishing.  A very pleasant surprise.  We're keeping this ball rolling.

 Needless to say, well maybe not needless, but we're going to spend the night here and see what this place looks like in the morning.
    

Capt Ryan checked in from the San Diego to report that they finished yesterday's trip with 111 Yellowtail. We got a lot on the yoyo iron as well as the surface iron and flylined baits. Make sure you bring all your Yellowtail gear to be prepared, a 40 lb rig, a 25 lb bait rod and a surface iron rod. How we ended up with only one picture today with such good fishing this morning on yellowtail I don't know? The one picture of Ricky kinda tells it all though! We took off and look for bluefin all afternoon and saw plenty! No biters. Most of the fish was 50 to 150 pounds! We will be trying for yellowtail again tomorrow. Hi friends. Big, beautiful 25-45 lb. yellowfin with a few handfuls of those beastly bluefin is what was on our plate today. We had a couple of good drifts in fantastic weather that made our day just dandy. Everybody is really amazed by this quality grade of yellowfin and I'm personally amazed that crewmember Mark doesn't have his own television show. Networks are missing out on what a goldmine following Mark around with a camera would be, 24/7. Some people might think that they're paying a healthy sum of money to come out fishing on a long range boat but I look at it like, people are paying a lot of money to come spend a few days with Mark Clark.

Anyhow, here is a short recap of our day: good morning (0545 hours), good breakfast (French toast, sausage, and eggs), good trolling rotations, good fishing, good weather, good sunshine, good lunch (chili), good fishing, good afternoon snacks, good galley assistant/chef-in-training (Shawn), good friends, good times, good dinner (roasted turkey with all the goods), good showers, good squid making, good night. It's alllllllllllll good. We allllllll bundle.We'll chat with you tomorrow.
