Hi Anglers,

Drew and the guys got in this morning off of Garth Kubeldis's Optima 1-1/2 day charter. They had a great catch for only 16 anglers fishing at 150 miles. The total was 39 bluefin, average weight being 29 lbs., 3 yellowfin, one being the jackpot fish at 35 lbs., and 11 yellowtail.

The POLARIS SUPREME is on line for an open party 2-day trip leaving Wednesday to target the bluefin again. At 10:00 am this morning one boat had just reached over 50 fish in the same area Drew was in and the rest of the fleet was heading that way. Captain Andrew Viola called in a bit ago with an update from the Pacifica out of Seaforth Sportfishing in San Diego, CA. We returned this morning from a 1.5 day trip and the fishing was as good as it gets. We had limits of Bluefin Tuna and 10 Yellowfin Tuna. The Bluefin were mainly 18 to 25 pounds but we also had 5 or 6 fish in the 60 to 80 pound class. We did manage to catch two of the bigger models (150 and 170). We have a 1.5 day trip tonight with a few spots and an overnighter on Thursday. Come out fishing on the Pacifica.

Capt Ryan checked in last night from the San Diego out of Seaforth Landing with a report for yesterdays trip, we went out with 36 anglers. We ended up with 35 Yellowtail, we have had a few days of weather this last week and it dropped the water temperature. We had a lot of novice anglers today who caught their first ever Yellowtail. Everything worked today from dropper loop to surface irons, we caught a few each way today. Things are looking really good right now and it is rebounding nicely, come on down and see us we are running these trips everyday.

Sep. 7

Normal turn around today. Nothing crazy happened. It was hot hot hot. The bluefin were bigger then we thought. The small one went 139.something and the biggest one went 146. Pigs. Or cows rather. We'd like to do the same this trip. We left on the annual Robin Gledhill Blue White private charter with captain Tommy Rothery at the helm. After getting bait and some lunch it was nap time for most. Me included. It was nice With a shower and a cup of coffee right after makes me feel like a million bucks. We did the seminar and had a lovely prime rib dinner. I skipped it and cooked up some of the escolar passenger John caught last trip and was too scared to keep. They're not the prettiest fish and after hearing rumors of what happens when you eat too much of it in one sitting he said no way was he keeping it. So i tried it tonight. I had it for dinner. Tommy won't let me say what happens on here so I'll just say that it's a very oily fish and you should be able to figure it out. I'll let you know tomorrow John. The weather out here is smooth and we should experience some more in the near future.

Spent most of day searching for yellowtail in extremely clean water and very strong current. Our search for gamefish came up empty but our 50 passengers enjoyed some fine shallow water bottom fishing. We ended up with 150 Whitefish, 50 Rockfish, 30 Sculpin, 10 Sheephead, and 10 Bonito. Aug. 17
    Today almost went as planned except for the lack of yellowfin.  We were supposed to scratch pretty good at the yellowfin in the morning, like 40 or so and then get on that big bluefin, and then scratch out another 30 or so yellowfin in the evening.  Well we did the middle part but the numbers were lower on the sides.  We saw plenty of that yellowfin, it just didn't bite well.  On with the cool part.  We found a mega school of that 70-100+ pound bluefin mid morning.  It's been a long time since I've seen a mega school and every time I do I forget about the time before and I think it's the biggest school I've ever seen and that's how today was.  Of course it didn't bite, but for me up in the wheel house where I can see it well it was incredible.  Just the area of fish was monstrous, and when you add in all the shiners and thousands of black backs swimming through, it's amazing.  We fished it for 4 hours on different attempts.  On the first, the youngster Brendan hooked up and landed about an 80 pounder.  On the second, his dad Scott hooked up and lost it and we hooked and lost another one.  On the third, Scott hooked up again but this time he landed his 107 pounder. So far it's looking like we'll have a father- son jack pot.  On the next few tries we got no reaction so we let it regroup for a while and a couple hours later we found it again and we hooked two more and lost them both and we missed a bite on the kite.  We tried it one more time after that for no reaction before we left it for good.  We're going to fish again tomorrow.  We'll make a small move and relocate but as things are right now, we don't need much more yellowfin so we'll concentrate on the other kind of tuna.
                                    

 

Captain Ryan Bostian checked in at 12:56 PM with an update from the San Diego out of Seaforth Sportfishing in Mission Bay, CA. We have been fishing the Coronado Islands for the past few months. The water temps dropped significantly so we fished offshore today. Captain Cameron checked in at 11:15 with 35 Yellowtail. We are hoping the Bluefin make a showing.
