guanacaste Fishing Report 2025

Captain Ryan Bostian checked in this evening with an update from “The San Diego” out of Seaforth Sportfishing in Mission Bay. Today we fished offshore continuing our streak of offshore trips. We had 39 passengers and we caught 195 California Yellowtail (limits) and 1 Pacific Bonito. It was very good Yellowtail fishing. We did see a few tuna in the area but we never hooked one today.
Be sure to bring a 25 pound bait rod (for Yellowtail). A 50 pound bait rod (for Bluefin Tuna) and a 50 pound rod for your flat fall or colt sniper!

Today started off with a bang! around daybreak a 110 pounder comes over the rail! and a few other smaller grade tuna were landed, then out of nowhere we loose our current but that didn't  stop us, We put out the jigs and went into search mode and found what we were looking for WAHOO!!, willing to bite and keep us busy most of the morning and into the late afternoon, with still no current and the wahoo backing off somewhat, back into search mode again we started seeing bird schools in a a different area that looked very promising, we took a tour of the new area and saw plenty of life! In this new area even the bait wanted to bite, so after filling two tanks of big bait we settled in for the night with high hopes for the early morning bite!

Today was a tough day at the island. There was a lot of fish around but we had trouble getting bites. However the bites we were able to get were great grade. Most being 50-70 lbs and one standout that was well into the mid hundreds. We are going to try our hand at the variety the day after tomorrow. Hopefully Wahoo, Dorado, Grouper, and school sized tuna. Ryan checking in here with the report for the past week. This past week was full of highs and lows. We fished for yellowtail at the Coronado islands all week and had some good days and some slow days. Finding fish was not the problem this past week. Finding fish that we could catch was a major problem. On both Thursday and Friday we landed 18 yellowtail both of these days we had yellowtail around our boat all day long. The way the yellowtail have been behaving lately we could catch 20 fish in 20 minutes or we could catch 0 in 15 hours. It's all about timing and a little luck never hurts either.

On Friday as we left the islands to head for home I got a call from our association president. Our president informed me that he had just received a letter from the Mexican port authority. This letter stated that any vessel that wishes to fish inside of Mexican territorial waters (24 miles from shore) must first check in at the port of Ensenada. This news was a bombshell to the boats that fish the Mexican coast. Our president has informed us that every U.S. government agency we know is working on this issue and hopes to get it resolved soon.

In the meantime our options on the San Diego are (1) fish in U.S. waters (2) fish in Mexico outside of 24 miles for yellowtail , tuna and dorado. We have decided to fish offshore.

Yesterday was our first trip offshore, we caught 5 bluefin tuna. All offshore trips will be limited to 50 passengers. I will keep you guys posted on any news I get concerning the Coronado islands.

One sweep of the sonar may change your life just like it did for our group today. 85 yellowfin tuna, 15 bluefin tuna, 30 skipjack tuna, 65 yellowtail (not tuna).

Captain Tucker McCombs called in this afternoon with a wrap-up from the Endeavor out of Hook's Landing in Oxnard, CA. We had limits of Seabass today in the 15 to 25 pound class. The fish were biting pretty good today. We are booked up throughout the weekend but we have plenty of room next week.
