"Fishing today was absolutely excellent!" wrote Polaris Supreme skipper Tom Rothery August 23. "The albacore bit all day and the weather has laid down and is good. All the albies were in the 25 to 30-pound range. For lunch we had swordfish in a butter, lemon, and caper cream sauce. For dinner we had a rack of lamb with a blue cheese port wine sauce. Yummy! A couple of boats headed to Guadalupe to no avail. We still have a spot here and there on some of our upcoming trips. Give Susan a call in the office if you can get away and come fish."
Rothery docked his boat at Fisherman's Landing August 24. He spent his fishing time on the four-day trip on the albacore grounds, with a half-day at Cortes Bank, where second skipper Drew Henderson reported big numbes of large bonito biting. The bones were eight to 12 pounds, he said. John Windling of Portland, OR won first place for a 41.4-pound albacore. He said he bagged it with a sardine on a 3/0 Mutu hook tied to 40-pound fluorocarbon leader and 60-pound Line One Spectra. He used an Avet JX reel and a Calstar 765 XL rod. David Schulz of Yorba Linda was second, for a 38.6-pounder, and John Thompson of Phoenix, AZ won third place for a 37-pound albacore.

Since our big hit on Tuesday, the yellowtail at the Coronado islands have gone into sleepy mode. Each of the last two days we have seen plenty of yellowtail but they have been very difficult to catch. Today we went out with 62 passengers and caught 2 yellowtail and 150 rockfish. One thing is for sure, these yellowtail will bite again. As far as predicting when they will bite it is anyone's guess. If you come out expecting to catch yellowtail, you may go home disappointed. If you come out to enjoy the "fishing"and the ocean, and you happen to come on a day in which the yellowtail are biting. You just might experience the best day of "catching" in your life. Be prepared, the difference between 75 yellowtail on the boat and 2 yellowtail on the boat is 2 hours of biting fish.

We had a great afternoon for our travel day. We got to the grounds around 4:30 in the afternoon and had over a hundred by dark. An absolute fun fun day for all. We'd see the fish , stop the boat, and catch them. Not like the albacore have been acting this year so far. See them, catch them. I like it when that happens. We stayed the night hoping for the same sign again today.

Good evening everyone, Today we spent the day searching for yellowtail, yellowfin tuna, and Wahoo. The conditions were poor but we still managed to scratch up some Wahoo. Not an incredible volume of fish but all still very appreciated. We are hoping for good current tomorrow so hopefully the fish decide to chew. We are going to fish the same area tomorrow. Hello friends. Well, the countdown is on. Come Saturday, the Polaris Supreme will be departing on her first trip of the 2012 season and the excitement level around here is very high. With all of our major maintenance projects being completed, we've shifted our focus to cleaning up the mess that the past month and a half as created along with finishing up some of the little "knick-knack" projects. Today, Jamie got serious in the galley wiping down the ceiling, the walls and countless other cleaning and organizing projects while Chef Schooler took inventory and is preparing for a fun day of shopping for the galley. As far as the rest of us, Mark, Tommie, Drew and myself have been doing various wood-work refinishing, organizing the engine room and deck, firing all the machinery up and working on the A/C unit. I'm pretty excited to see how the A/C will run this year as we've done some fine tuning to the unit to make it run more efficient with less noise. We'll see how everything goes when we install the new evaporator on Thursday. Jamie did a super clean in the galley, Schooler took inventory, and the bossman organized the wheelhouse and made various upgrades to some of our weather and fishing programs. We had all hands on deck today and we'll be popping in and out throughout the week to ensure that all systems are a go come Saturday.

So that's all. We're getting pretty fired up as the day is soon arriving that we shove off and hopefully find ourselves knee deep in some of those beautiful Bluefin tuna that are running around offshore and some homeguard Yellowtail at the islands. But for now, we'll just keep getting things cleaned up and organized. We'll chat with you tomorrow.

Captain Mike Pritchard called in late last night with an audio update from the Tribute out of Seaforth Sportfishing in Mission Bay.  We finished the day with good action.   We finished with 38 Bluefin Tuna up to 100 pounds.  They were biting the fly-lined sardines on 40 pound with fluorocarbon.
