Hi everyone. A fun day was had by all here on the Polaris Supreme. For a while, it was looking rather bleak, but we got on a breezer a little after lunch time and "put the wood on" some Bluefin. That last quotation was a Mark Clark-ism, I don't know what putting the wood on means but he apparently says it when he would like our anglers to hook up and pull on some fish. Well, from lunch time until sun down, they were looking like they all worked at the lumber section of Home Depot. We also had a nice sonar school towards the end of the day that gave us a ripper up until dark. Lots of good times for the boys today here on the Polaris Supreme. All the kids had a blast and we're throwing out the "sack" tonight to hopefully do this again tomorrow. Hopefully, the time of day thing gets straightened out and we have some action in the morning time. We'll chat with you tmorrow.

P.S. The Phrase Is "putting the wood to them" not on them. Thus the Clark-ism variation. The Term comes from a time when your father would make you go to the wood pile to pick your own piece of lumber to spank you for lipping off or what ever you did wrong. So we spanked the tuna, put a hurt on them, or put the wood to them! Tommy.

 

 

The morning started our ok. We scratched yellows for about 4 hours and kelps patties. Little sign of dorado. As the day progressed it got tougher with few patties. Overall it was a slow day.

Our weather is still great. Tomorrow we our on our way to do some Island fishing. Wish us luck.

Hi friends. Not too much to report today. Things seemed a little different today as that big fish had their noses in the mud for the most part and we never tagged a fish over twenty pounds today. That smaller fish made their presence known but that's not really what we were targeting today. Oh well, I think the guys needed a break anyhow from their awesome day they had yesterday and with that, we're going to take a break from the tuna fishing scene and we're headed to a different area that we think will be holding some yellowtail and dorado on kelp paddies. We'll be there first thing in the morning and we'll report back to you tomorrow. Take care and wish us luck.

Hi friends. Starting off the day, we were expecting rain if not when we woke up but for sure around the mid-morning time. Captain Drew told me to expect work at 0700 hours this morning and that he would call me if he was going to call off the day. At about 0615 hours, my phone rang and when I saw that my phone read "Incoming call: Drew Henderson", I nearly trampled my girlfriend to reach for the phone and hear those beautiful words of "don't come to work today". Well, Drew being the awesome boss that he is just wanted to remind me that work was still on. Disappointed is an understatement. He specifically said that he would only call to let me know that we were NOT to come into work. I reluctantly suited up for work, still a little peeved that my vision of sleeping in and an all-day couch marathon was switched back to 7-11 coffee, 5-hour energies, and arthritic hands by days end.

Now some of you might be asking "Richie. Why so grumpy about going to work?" Well, after Tuesday's primer coat application, the primer creates what is called "orange peel".The entire hull looks like a giant, white orange peel and to rid ourselves of this orange peel, what must one do to smooth it out and get prepped for the final gloss coat? If you guessed "more sanding" then yes, you are correct. From 0700 until 1630 hours on Wednesday, we had to re-sand the entire boat with 220-grit sand paper to smooth everything out. Oh, how could I forget? We did all of this under beautiful, sunny skies. That weatherman is not our friend at the moment. He was wrong about the Wednesday morning/afternoon rain but he was correct about the rainfall on Wednesday evening in San Diego.

So here it is, Thursday morning and work was called off not only because of the rain but also to relieve sore, aching muscles as the constant use of both vibrating and orbital sanders took it's toll on Drew, Jed, Mark, Tommie, Jamie and myself from yesterday and we were given the day off. Thanks, Drew.

In all seriousness, there is a silver lining to all of my complaining of long days and sore bodies. All of the hard work that we put into the boat doesn't go un-noticed when we take a look at the boat right before the first trip of the season. The boat will look stunning and it will be a pleasure to keep her maintained throughout the years. When we have to put on our sunglasses to even stare at the hull and when you see your reflection perfectly in the boat, it's sweet justice to put so much time and effort into a project and to have it come out looking so beautiful. We can't wait to see how everyone will react when they first lay eyes on the new and improved Polaris Supreme.

Anyhow, I had some time to type out a nice, long report on our day off today. Weather permitting, we'll be back at it tomorrow to finish some touch-up sanding as we get ready for the final application of the gloss coat which probably will be scheduled for either Friday or Monday. We'll chat with you tomorrow and let you know how our day went.

P.S. Sorry about no pictures lately. There really hasn't been anything picture-worthy in the past couple of days and the pictures I would've shot, you've seen before: all of us with sanders in our hands, gloves on, respirator masks, safety glasses and looking like giant powdered donuts. I'll send some shots with the completion of the gloss coat.

Hi friends. Not too much to report today on the Polaris Supreme. After the completion of lunch, all we did was pull on bluefin tuna, dorado, and yellowtail. Granted, the dorado's were shin slappers and the yella's were neck ties, but we did weed out a handful of nicer onces and kept the BFT's a comin'. We did see a couple flurries of that smaller 12-15 lb. fish, but for the most part, our grade was a solid 25-30 lb. grade, and they bit very well too.

To give you an idea of how good fishing was, and for some reason, I'm still kind of buzzing about this situation, but after monitoring the anglers on the bow for a while, I couldn't help but toss a line out, as there were boils ten feet from the boat and the angler participation was starting to dwindle as the end of the day was upon us and the cocktails were beginning to flow. Anyhow, I was soaking a bait for a bit, chattin' it up with an angler to my left, and here comes another angler to the bow with a fish that's close to gaff on my right. So, I grabbed a gaff, put my rod in the gaff holder, in gear, and told the angler "If this gets bit (pipe dream), grab it and swap out your rod for the hooked up one." About thirty seconds later, as my anglers fish was getting ready for the death-shot, I hear "Hey Richie! Something is--uh--happening!" Low and behold, the gaff rig is full bendo with line screaming off of it. Wowza! For all this "Bluefin require a stealthy approach and light line", we hooked one up with a half dead bait, in gear, sitting in the rack. Bottom line, excellent fishing. No reason to not tell a little story that I thought was pretty hot.

So that's it. Pretty easy decision for tomorrow's activities as we're going to put out the "sack" and try have a repeat of today tomorrow. Hopefully we connect with a morning bite on the bag and don't have to pull it first thing at 0530 hours. Our weather is just okay, a little breezy and choppy but plenty workable conditions. Mike Pritchard called in from the Tribute with this report. "We have 35 Bluefin for this stop and we're right around 60 for the day. Yellowtail fishing has been very good as well. We're at about 100 on the Yellowtail and a few Dorado. The Bluefin is up to about 70 lbs. A lot of the the is in the 15 to 25 lb. range. We still have some daylight left, we'll keep you posted.

Hello everyone Today we had a nice day of fishing. We were able to get a nice morning hit on these Bluefin Tuna. Today they were not only 20-40lbers. We hooked some larger models in the 80 lb range. We did not land them due to long battles on 20-25 lb test. At least we know they are here and ready to catch! We will be trying here tomorrow for one more day before the wind picks up. July 23 Friday After spending all day yesterday searching and not catching our 35 albacore we caught this morning seamed like a bonanza. They shut off at 11:00 and that was that. With the Albacore hit we got on the way down and one of those days fishing Yellowtail one can only dream of, our over all fishing was great. many thanks to our charter head Paul and his great crew of anglers. But he also dose a better job scrubbing and Drew wasn't letting him get out of it. Tommy. July 22nd, 2010 Hello to all. Today we decided to look around at some new territory for the elusive albacore. I'm going to cut right to the chase, fishing was great and catching was terrible. We did see an area of birds/whales that looked promising but we never saw a tuna and that was the highlight of our day. Maybe in time this area will be productive but for now, we know where not to go. The weather is still picture-perfect and our anglers are all in good spirits. We are currently moving up the line to put ourselves in position for a full day of albacore/bluefin fishing for our final day. We'll check back in tomorrow and keep you posted on our day. Richie and Crew. July 21st, 2010 Wow, what a day we had aboard the Polaris Supreme. We arrived at our destination first thing in the morning to find calm seas and a slight overcast. After some scanning around, we located a nice school and within a few minutes we were bent over with yellowtail. It wasn't wide open by any means but it was a very enjoyable pace for our fine group of folks. Around lunch time, we went through a little lull and took full advantage of a chance to rest sore arms, enjoy a glass of water, and get out of the sun for a bit. Oh yeah, the weather was gorgeous. Flat calm with sunshine. The SPF 50 was flowing for sure. Anyhow, after a little break, it was time to go to work again. This go-around, the yellows gave off a much more ferocious vibe and we enjoyed excellent fishing to round out our day. The show of yellowtail was very impressive to say the least. Not many times when we would look into the water and not see free swimming yellowtail everywhere. In closing, we had a very fun day of fishing and we will be sleeping easy tonight. Our plan is to take a look in some different areas for tomorrow and to hopefully round out our beautiful catch of yellowtail with some tuna fish. Thanks for checking in and wish us luck. Richie and crew. July 20th, Good evening everyone, We finally wet our lines first thing this morning and it didn't take us long to get the blood flowing with some Albacore jig strikes. After some short stops for a handful of fish, we found what we we're looking for. We enjoyed a couple of very good stops that kept us busy for the morning. We also threw on a few Bluefin tuna to round out our morning. After lunch, things kind of died down and we decided to head on a southerly course to do some Yellowtail fishing. The cherry on today's sundae was the absolutely beautiful weather. Flat calm, a light breeze, and a nice cloud cover to keep us from getting too toasty. Well thanks for checking up on us. We'll be at the Yellowtail grounds first thing in the morning. Take care. Richie and crew. July 19th, Hi friends, Today we departed on our annual Paul Hess 5 day with 23 of his closest friends. After clearing Point Loma with a beautiful load of bait and an eager group of anglers, we enjoyed a wonderful lunch and rigged up tackle. After our tackle seminar, Sandra and Dave Lafferty went to work in the galley preparing a meal fit for kings and queens. Appetizers, clam chowder and Caesar salad. Main course, Fresh salmon and crab cakes with a hollandaise sauce with gourmet macaroni and cheese, asparagus and corn. To top off the meal, we enjoyed homemade cherry cobbler with vanilla ice cream. To sum it up, it was excellent. The service was top notch as well. Paul and Kyle served it up and Matt kept those dishes sparkling clean. The whole dinner was a thank you from Paul and friends for 10 years of the fine service he's been treated to onboard the Polaris Supreme. From all of us, thank you to Paul and the gang.
