The fishing at 140 miles completely flopped this weekend sending boats in every direction. We did experience some good kelp patty fishing Saturday with 13 Dorado, 11 Bluefin, 28 Yellowtail and a lot of BIG BAD BONITO.

Sunday was spent sliding on school after school of quality Yellowfin Tuna for 20 Yellowfin, 1 Bluefin and 1 Yellowtail.

We did find a area of Big Bluefin just before dark, but they were lip locked.
Great to see this grade of Yellowfin in 1 day range and then there’s that “June Dorado”
We will be running 1 day trips all week, fishing for Tuna, Yellowtail and Dorado.

This past week has been all about chasing yellowtail. The amount of yellowtail we have been seeing at the Coronado Islands has been very impressive. The fish counts have not been a representation of how much fish is in the water. Stopping on a school of 300 yellowtail and only hooking 1 has become very common. On Friday we managed to catch 30 yellowtail and Saturday produced 20. These fish are still running in the 20-30 pound range with multiple fish over 30 in the past week. Fly lined sardines on 30 lb. yo-yo lures on 40 or 50 lb. as well as surface iron on 40 lb. have all been producing fish. These yellowtail have been a challenge to hook mainly because of all the bait in the water. When some of the bait goes away and these fish settle in. 50 to 100 fish days will become common. Hey guys Ryan from the San Diego here! Today we went out with 25 passengers and caught 15 yellowtail. The style of fishing we are doing right now is a lot like offshore fishing. Lots of driving and looking. Our crew has been burning there eyes all day in the binoculars. Those who have patience and are willing to put in the work have been rewarded with a very large yellowtail. In the past 4 days we have caught 5 fish over 30 lbs. Our bites have been coming on both yo-yo and surface lures. Grab some fresh 40lb. mono and come on down .

A five-day Dan Heil Annual Charter aboard Polaris Supreme with Skipper Drew Henderson, arrived August 21 at Fisherman's Landing. "It's been 20 years now, since '87," said chartermaster Ron Heil, "that I've been doing this trip. My father Dan, who passed away this last season, had been doing it since Tommy (Rothery) bought the boat back in '80 or '81." Dan Heil had been chartering with Rothery since the early eighties on the Polaris Deluxe, now the Breezers. He sailed with Rothery on the Polaris Supreme since '85. Rothery bought the boat from Bill Poole in 1987. "It was a little choppy on that first day," said Skipper Henderson. "But we had great albacore fishing. Cedros was great, we spent a half-day kelp fishing with little action, so we finished up at Benitos, and it was all the fish you could get." "We had a good trip and great timing," continued Heil, who hails from Portland, OR. "Drew did a great job, right out of the chute the first day, we were on a great albacore bite. It was a well rounded trip."
Mike Hunting of Riverside landed a 48.4-pound yellowtail at Benitos Islands, good for first place in the jackpot. Mike fished a sardine on a 5/0 Owner hook, 40-pound P-Line, an Avet HX 2-speed reel, and a Calstar rod. "We were in a shallow spot on the ridge" said Hunting, "and there were guys losing fish in the kelp. So when I got bit, I decided he wasn't gonna get to the kelp, so I buttoned down, past strike, and started cranking." Bill Byler of Covina was second for a 37.6-pound albacore and Gary De Void of Encinitas was third for a 36.4-pound albie.

We're on our way home after an absolutely great day of fishing," said Mike Pritchard. "We ended up with 136 Bluefin tuna, 8 Dorado, 6 Yellowtail and 50 Skipjack. It was very, very good fishing for a 1 Day trip.

Good evening folks. We departed today on Eric Rogger's annual 5 day trip. We took a while at the bait receivers. The bait they had wasn't all that bitchen. We took a couple lids that should do fine for the trip but I'm not so sure about the rest. Time will tell but it may turn on us. Hopefully we'll be able to use it tomorrow on big schools of bluefin before it turns solid red. We're going to start off looking for the elusive bluefin first thing in the morning and put in a day doing that. It's beautiful weather today and we're enjoying a great ride now and the passengers are enjoying the departure meal of prime rib and sides. Wish us luck

Today's numbers were better. We had a lot more fish, just not a real good size to them. The albacore and bluefin are around 12 lbs. with a few bigger. The yellowfin are bigger, around 25-30 lbs. Weather is still good. Thanks for checking in. Tommy and crew
