Polaris Supreme Trip Update 07-05-12

       We departed yesterday afternoon on a 1 1/2 day charter we picked up at the last minute so we are a little behind on our reports. When we left the dock with our 4 anglers the outlook was semi promising. There was one boat with 15 of the large bluefin late in the day at 150 miles and signs of 20 to 30 pound fish at 120 miles but it wasn’t biting. We woke this morning to find the ocean flat and calm as could be with spots of breaking 20 to 30 pound bluefin signaling us to stop. And stop we did and where rewarded with a hook up all the way around for every one on deck (all 3). The bottom line on our day was limits of small yellowtail and every one caught a couple of bluefin each except 1 angler only landed one. That’s 20 yellowtail and 7 bluefin, most of which was caught in the afternoon at 120 miles. The gang all had an excellent time and we would like to thank them all. This area has defiantly fallen apart and Drew and the boys will be taking you guys going out tomorrow farther south on your 2 day trip tomorrow so don't be late he will leave as soon as you all get down to the boat and ck in 11:00 am or sooner. The killer bluefin fishing right now is at 250 miles with the upper end being at 180 miles. You guys should be below 180 miles if you can clear the dock buy 12:00. So don't be late. This fishing in the 250 mile zone is insane. The best bluefin fishing in years if want to jump on a 2 to 5 day and target this fish call Susan at the Polaris Supreme office. Today was a good day out here. We started our morning off with a few yellowfin strikes and at 8:30 we hit a good school of stock 25-30 pound bluefin, a few bigger and a few smaller with some yellowfin and dorado mixed in. We drifted with them for two and a half hours. For most the rest of the day we didn't drive for more then an hour before seeing something. We found a dab of 40-60 pound bluefin and landed one, we found another dab of 25-30 pounders and landed 10, we found a kelp for a handfull of yellowfin along with the occasional yf jig strike. An action packed day, just what we needed. Good weather for us today but the guys down below are complaining about rough weather. We're heading in now and Tommy Rothery is coming back out after a long land stretch and is taking the boat out for 8 days. I'm sure he's looking forward to getting out of the office and back on the water.

Captain Matt and the boys burning the midnight oil for twenty 35-50 lb bluefin and 1 yellowfin. Put the J hooks away and exchange them for circles when Mr. Bluefin is around.

Captain Ryan of The San Diego checked in with a trip report for today.  57 Bluefin(15-60lbs) 14 Yellowfin (15-30lbs). About as good as it gets local Bluefin fishing. A 30-50lb bait rod was all you needed today.

Captain Mike Pritchard called in this with an audio wrap up from the Tribute out of Seaforth Sportfishing in Mission Bay.

Today we finished with 71 Yellowfin Tuna, 8 Bluefin Tuna, a couple of Yellowtail and Dorado.

We are out on a 3.5 day charter tonight.

Good evening. We just finished up our day out here on the Bluefin grounds and the people are downstairs enjoying dinner and a shower right now. It was looking pretty sad there for a while there but just in the last few hours, we managed to salvage our day and made an afternoon of it.

Up until around the late afternoon time, we just got bits and pieces and right around our afternoon snack time, we got on a legitimate school and had a couple hour drift on 25-60 lb. shortfins and a few nice Yellowtail as well. Just before dark, we found a couple of other schools and we managed to pick off a few fish to round out the day.

So we're pumped up about our afternoon delight and The Mustache (Drew) has decided to stick it out here for another day based on what went on in the afternoon. We weren't the only boat to have schools float in the afternoon either. All the boats out here had the ocean come alive and it was a decent spread of guys out here in all different areas. With that, we're banking on these fish getting with it tomorrow, hopefully sooner rather than later. We'll see.

So that is all. Our weather is decent at the moment but all in all, it was a freaky weather day. At times today, we had 5 knots of breeze and at times we had gusts of 40 knots, no smoke. The sea conditions weren't all that bad but the wind was variable to say the least. With a favorable forecast for tomorrow, we're hoping for a banner day. Wish us luck, good night.
