Tommy Rothery returned Polaris Supreme to Fisherman's Landing November 18 after a ten-day Ocean Tackle Research charter. The boat had 13 anglers aboard. Chartermaster Lon Mikkelsen of Hood River, OR saw his father, Bill Mikkelsen of Olympia, WA land the season's first super cow; a tuna over 300 pounds.
"It was full-speed fishing," said Chartermaster Lon Mikkelsen. Bill Mikkelsen's big fish won first place after it weighed in at 308.8-pounds, caught on a fly-lined sardine. Bill used the boats gear, including a 6/0 Mustad 7691 hook, 100-pound P-Line, and a Shimano rod and reel.
"Tommy said it was tail-wrapped from the beginning," said the elder Mikkelsen. "And he was, but he got lose and went on another run. He took me around the boat twice." "We started with yellowtail fishing on the ridge that turned out to be a real good bite," said Rothery. "We easily could have got limits on yellowtail and dorado, but these guys normally release most of their fish. We had one day of awesome marlin fishing, which this group enjoyed quite a bit." "I think we had maybe 200 hookups on marlin," said John Esler of Portland. "But our yellowfin bite was pretty amazing. Once Tommy would find them, he'd shut the motors off and just drift. They didn't need a lot of chum either, they were boiling all around the boat." Esler landed a 206.7-pound yellowfin.
Matt Kiesse of Cederville, CA was second place with a 279.8-pound yellowfin.
"The trip was just spectacular," said Kiesse. "We got everything." Lon Mikkelsen was third with a 277.9-pound tuna. The trip scored five tuna over 200 pounds.

The Pacifica out of Seaforth Landing in San Diego, CA wrapped up a 2 day trip with 24 anglers.

We just got tied up from a 1.5 Day. We had a pretty good trip out there and ended with 28 Bluefin Tuna from 30-110 pounds. We saw a really good sign of fish out there, so that’s pretty encouraging. We did see some of that bigger grade fish, but only got a few.

We had an awesome 1.5 trip on the Apollo out of Fisherman's Landing. We left Friday night at 7 pm and headed to Punta Colnett. Weather was very nice, calm and glassy. We started fishing for Yellowtail in the early morning but no biter. We preceded fishing for Rockfish. We drifted every hot spots that Captain JJ knew and they were all very productive. We came up with lots of good quality Vermilion Reds, Lingcod and Bocaccio Rockfish. At about 3 in the afternoon, Yellowtail breezers came through and all six of us got hooked with our rockcod gangnion hooks. We ended with two 25 lbs Yellows. Next time I'll be ready. We fished until almost dark and we bagged 125 Vermillion Reds, 98 Rock cod, 25 Lingcod and 2 Yellowtail for 25 guys. Captain JJ runs a top notch operation together with Jessica, Joe, Travis and Chef Nick. They were all very professional and helpful at all times. Chef Nick serves all variety of gourmet food on the boat. Apollo will be still running trips in Fisherman's Landing until end of March and will move to Santa Barbara on April. Good morning everyone, Today we had some good yellowtail fishing. A lot of fish around, but pretty hard to catch. Random flurries through out the day made it possible for us to be able to piece together a nice day. The fish were boiling up around the boat pretty good, but did not bite as good as we would have imagined. They must be on krill or red crab or something. Whatever they are keyed in on it is not what we have.....yet. We will give it the day tomorrow, wish us luck, Team supreme

Hello there Polaris Supreme fans,

 

Today started off with a bang! around daybreak a 110 pounder comes over the rail! and a few other smaller grade tuna were landed, then out of nowhere we loose our current but that didn't  stop us, We put out the jigs and went into search mode and found what we were looking for WAHOO!!, willing to bite and keep us busy most of the morning and into the late afternoon, with still no current and the wahoo backing off somewhat, back into search mode again we started seeing bird schools in a a different area that looked very promising, we took a tour of the new area and saw plenty of life! In this new area even the bait wanted to bite, so after filling two tanks of big bait we settled in for the night with high hopes for the early morning bite!
