We're off to a very god start here this morning," said Mike Pritchard. "We're down here at about the 100 mile mark with very nice weather. We're doing well on the kelps and have some open water jig strikes. So far we have 71 Yellowfin Tuna, 61 Yellowtail and a handful of Dorado & Skipjack, for 26 anglers.

"We do leave on a 1.5 Day trip tomorrow night there is still room and the weather should be good. We'll check back later."

Captain Mike Pritchard called in this afternoon with an update from the Tribute. We are having very good Yellowfin Tuna just South of San Clemente Island. There is a mix of Yellowfin Tuna, Skipjack, and Dorado. We have 180 Yellowfin Tuna and they are biting on everything. Rolling up! Today we had to leave the peaceful waters of the Island to start making our way north. The sea is rolling us around for the course we need to take. Overall it is a smooth ride so far. We are continuing to see impressive schools. It seems everyday we are getting better responses out of them. Our last trip we had a good opportunity on the 60-90 pound fish, keeping 1 to 5 fish hooked for the better part of 4 hours. Getting a bite wasn’t the hard part but because we were forced to use our “finesse” gear we had to work very hard to land them. Hopefully the trend continues !

We had a good day of fishing today on the yellowfin tuna most of the fish
were 40 to 55 pounds a few standouts in the 70 and 80 pound range! We again
had heavy losses due to tackle failure and of course the great white sharks!
Our weather was excellent all day. The guys are fishing 40 pound test to 50
pound test with very small hooks mostly size 1 or 1/0. Most of the fish lost
are probably in the 70 to hundred pound range. There just on so long that
the line wears through or they get munched! Everybody had a shot at two to
as many as seven fish throughout the day but our land ratio was down around
30%. We're going to do this again tomorrow hopefully we have better luck on
the landing end of it!, All in all it was great day.

Back after a five-day trip, the 7th Annual Paul Chappell Charter aboard the Polaris Supreme arrived at Fisherman's Landing July 10. The 24 anglers were guided by skipper Drew Henderson.
"We got some nice yellowtail at San Martin," remarked Drew, "but there's a lot of that big squid around there. You can't get any more yellows once they get on you." Chartermaster Chappell won first place for his 34.6-pound albacore. He said he bagged it with a sardine on a 2/0 Mustad 94150 hook on 30-pound Yo-Zuri line. He fished with a Penn Squidder reel and a Sabre seven-foot rod of the same era. Phil Beltrami of Napa won second place for a 33.4-pounder, and Craig Pappas of Santa Cruz won third place for a 32.4-pound longfin.
