Good Evening everyone,
Today we woke up anchored in the yellowtail grounds. Things started off slow with a couple fish being brought in on the dropper loop and yo yo iron. Most of the fish caught in the morning were nice sized yellowtail in the 20-30lb range with a couple of really nice sheep head and assorted rock fish in the mix. As the morning went on, the yellows moved up in the water column and started to bite the fly lined sardine and the surface iron. The fish were coming around in flurries with a handful of anglers hooking up at a time. We picked at the yellows for a couple of hours before making a short move. We started off catching some smaller grade yellows before the big ones moved in. Before long the fish started boiling around the boat, and started to bite. We continued to put fish on the boat all afternoon into the evening before the bite slowed down. Most of the guys had success on fly lined sardines with 30 or 40 lb test and a 1/0 or 2/0 hook. When the bite had stopped we sat on the anchor for the night and enjoyed a nice dinner courtesy of chef Mike. We will be fishing the same area tomorrow, and will be hoping for a similar outcome as today before trying our luck for the yellowfin once again.

Good evening friends. Wrapping up the 2011 OTR 10-day trip, the big fish honors go as follows: Matt Kiesse - 193.6 lb. Yellowfin tuna, Lon Mikkelsen 149.4 lb. Yellowfin tuna, and Mike "Wedding Bells" Payne rounds out our top three with his 140.0 lb. Yellowfin tuna. Honorable mentions go to Doug "Stick-Bird" Pineo for his 201.2 lb cow and Yacoob Vaheb caught his personal best of 150.0 lbs. Good going to the boys and most everyone on the boat caught a very nice fish in the 75-125 lb. class. For our two days on the bank, it was decent fishing for those lunker Yellowfin's and if we would've caught what we saw, it would've been a trip for the ages. No shortage of fish around just a shortage of bites and consistency, but we made the most of our chances and ended up with a nice load of big tuna to show for it.
We'd like to issue some thanks to a few individuals aboard this last trip. First, we'd like to thank Mike Payne for bringing some crab for all of the folks to enjoy for a dinner and also for bringing some shirts from Rocky Point Resort in Petersburg, Alaska. Second, we got to thank Ben "Bendo" Meyer for once again putting together a great recipe/picture book and CD to give to the folks. Where he gets the time and energy to do such a magnificent job on that book is beyond me. That thing is pro from front to back. And lastly, Lon Mikkelsen. His enthusiasm towards fishing, trying new tactics, and laid-back attitude makes the trip for all to enjoy. He wants to catch all kinds of fish and it doesn't matter if it's rockcod, squid, cow tuna, or any other species we might fish for; he just loves to fish. Also, he's one of the funniest guys around. Thanks to everyone for joining Lon and Greg once again this year and we hope to see all of you next year. The OTR trip is a "can't miss" trip and if anyone is interested in joining Lon on the Polaris Supreme for next years trip, I have a solid piece of advice for you; book early.

Hi friends. Not a whole lot to report today. We made a couple of stops for the guys who wanted to fill out their Yellowtail limit and for those who just wanted to do a little catch and release. Other than that, we just ate, read, played cribbage, and took naps the duration of the day and we concluded this evening's dinner with Lon handing out a bunch of OTR gear and countless other goodies to the fine folks aboard. Tommy bypassed a two-hundred bottle of wine for a "Chum King" chumming device that you can send to the bottom, pull a cord, and chum disperses. It looks a lot like those things that when you drive up to the bank teller and you put the money or deposit into the tubes and they shoot off to the teller at Mach speed. I guess it's the gift that keeps on giving because a bottle of wine only gives you fun for one night. Looking back on it, excellent choice, Tommy.
Well, us and Tommy's new toy are going to try to capture some of those tasty Vermilion rockfish and Lingcod for a few hours tomorrow so we'll let you know how things wind up. Our weather is absolutely awesome and we're extremely fortunate to have the sea conditions that we are experiencing right now. We'll be dropping our loops tomorrow morning, wish us luck and we'll report back to you in the evening.

Hi friends. We made it to the grounds first thing this morning and immediately began dropping Yellowtail in the wells. It wasn't great fishing by any means but it was a good pick on 'tails averaging right around the 15-18 lb. mark. After our morning, we looked around for some tuna sign and after locating a nice school on one of the shallows, it wasn't long after we came tight on the anchor that we started hooking some. Problem was, it was mostly Black Skipjack, not cool. After a while of weeding out the junk, our fishing became pretty clean fishing on some school-sized Yellowfin. We caught a healthy catch of these Yellowfin's for the remainder of the afternoon and we also managed to capture a couple of Wahoo for our day. It was a good day for us on the Supreme and along with our good fishing, we also had pretty nice weather to boot. For tomorrow, we'll be traveling for most of the day but I'm sure we'll have some time to do a little Yellowtail and Grouper fishing. With a good load of tuna on the boat for the gang, it's time to start making way up the line and finish out our trip on Yellows and tasty bottom-dwellers.
So that is all. Our weather is a bit sloppy this evening but we'll see what happens tomorrow morning. We'll chat with you at this time tomorrow evening.

Hi folks. Tough day for us as we ventured offshore in search of bigger tuna. Things just weren't right and although we saw sign of fish, it wasn't our day to catch any. With that, we motored up the line to see if we couldn't snag us some Wahoo or find some school-sized tuna. No-go on the tuna but we did troll up a few Wahoo for our day. Our day consisted of beautiful sea conditions but a ton of rain. From about mid-morning all the way until we were finished making bait this evening, it poured on us and although the boat and gear needed a good fresh watering, it got a little old after about hour five of non-stop precipitation. Oh well, it could've been worse, it could've been windy with large seas, or it could've snowed. It's just one of the many elements that we have to deal with while out on the open-ocean.
So that is all. Not too much to report other than we're making our way up the line to do some offshore fishing tomorrow for a variety of species and hopefully, our report will tell a tale of lots of different fish and sunshine. We'll see and wish us luck. We'll chat with you tomorrow.

Fishing today was absolutely fantastic. The morning started out slow. We were scratching on the anchor. We thought we were in for another slow day. But we made a move to a new area and had some phenomenal fishing on some nice grade yellowtail. Beautiful average of about 22 lbs or so. We were fishing with a porpoise school and sharks.
Lots of surface iron. Lots of action. Weather is good. Nice and sunny in the afternoon. Tomorrow we'll be be looking for some cow yellowtail.

A slow day on the Polaris Supreme today. My honey hole wasn't so much a honey hole. We had a couple stops the first half a day for some nice bluefin, yellows and dorado before taking off to what I hope tomorrow is the promise land. An example of how big the ocean is, one hour after leaving the area a code boat found a dandy school and gave me the position. Upon further investigation I noticed it was 1 mile from my earlier track line. It didn't bite for him. Now I always want my fellow boats to do well out here but you know deep down inside I was a little relieved to here that.
The weather out here is still fabulous and tomorrow is going to be a day full of bent rods, hooting and hollering and a boat full of tired people. I can feel it.

We had a great morning today. I'd have to check with the big guy but I believe we had around 60 of the 15-25 pound yellowfin and 9 of those big 60-80 pound bluefins on our first drift. I'd call that a good morning. It wasn't full speed either. It was just a nice scratch over a period of a few hours. Nice drifting along there in beautiful weather once again. I sure hope this weather lasts a while along with the fishing.
After our first drift we did some others of course. None producing as well as the first one but throughout the day we scratched at some more yellowfin and a few more of those big bluefins. It was just what we needed after a day of mostly driving around seing a lot and not catching much. Needless to say we'll be hanging around here tonight and trying it again tomorrow.
On a sad note, one of the greats in the sportfishing industry passed away today. Most of you reading this wouldn't know who I'm talking about because he was a behind the scenes guy. I'm talking about the great sardine fisherman Joe Machado, and if you've been fishing in the last 35+ years, you were using bait most likely caught or found by him. As you all know, no bait no fish, so we'll be throwing some sardines over the side for him tomoorow. RIP Joe.

The tenth annual George Davis trip aboard the Polaris Supreme arrived at Fisherman's Landing December 5, after spending ten days in southern waters with a super ultra-light load of seven anglers, including chartermaster Davis. There were five tuna over 200 pounds in the catch. One fish was well over 300 pounds.
The big fish came in at 347.8 pounds, caught by Kevin Stokes, who is studying video making and cinematography, working on his B. A. in digital video at Mt. Sierra College in Monrovia. The giant yellowfin bit a sardine on a 6/0 Mustad 7691 hook tied to 100-pound P-Line and 130-pound Spectra on one of the boat's rigs: a Tiagra 50 reel and a Calstar 6460 XXH rod. It fought for 35 minutes.
"He didn't fight too hard," said Stokes. He just laid there like a big cow. I almost lost him at the end, because his circles went all the way across the stern. They got him with four gaffs and lifted him over the rail.
"My best tuna before this one was 180 pounds. It fought harder. I may have this one mounted. Next, I've got to go back to work and to school."
Stokes said he does freelance work in video.
Eleven-year-old Gunnar Johnston outscored the men by taking two cows; two yellowfin over 200 pounds. One of his fish weighed 217.8 pounds and won second place. The other went 209 pounds. Gunnar goes to Marinotha Christian Academy, and races motocross. His dad Craig Johnston is a construction manager in Orange County and was close by when Gunnar hooked his big cow.
"I was up the rail," said Craig, "and I saw him get bent, and I shouted, βΠΡdon't let go of that rig,' and I saw him pull back harder."
Gunnar got the fish to gaff in 45 minutes, after it bit a sardine on a 6/0 Super Mutu hook on 130-pound Izorline fluorocarbon leader tied to 100-pound Momoi line and 130-pound Line One Spectra. He used an Avet 50 reel and a Calstar 6455 XXH rod.
"It's my first long range trip," said Gunnar. "It's fun, hooking up and catching these big fish.
Craig Johnston said his son had been on one and two-day trips before, but this was his first long range venture.
"My best fish before was a 30-pound albacore or a dorado," said Gunnar. "I want to do it again."
His dad felt the same way. "He was bit hard at first," said Craig, "but he did his work in the corner."
Charlie Middleton of San Pablo took a 213-pounder and won third place. He said it bit a sardine on an 8/0 Gamakatsu hook tied to 100-pound Soft Steel Ultra line and 130-pound Power Pro Spectra on a Penn 80 SW reel and a five and a half-foot Ugly Stick rod. The fight lasted 20 minutes.
"The best fishing was during the squalls," said Charlie. "That's when I hooked this one. He took me around the boat twice. There was a lot of 18-inch squid around."
Jim Jacobs of Murietta had never been fishing before. "I didn't know how to hold the pole," he said. Jacobs got a 202.6-pound tuna after a 40-minute scrap. It bit a sardine on an 8/0 Mustad 7691 hook, also on one of the boat's rigs. "My first trip," said Jacobs, "and my first fish."
