Today was slow fishing for Wahoo. We only landed a couple. Not many bites and some were eaten by sharks. The conditions were rough and we were rolling around pretty good. We did have a shot at some large Yellowtail. They were deep in some treacherous country. For those who buttoned down their drags and pulled with all their might were able to tear a few from the rocks. A small victory on a otherwise slow day. Tomorrow we will still be pursuing Wahoo, but will be in good country for Tuna and Yellowtail as well.

We ran our last Guadelupe trip from 11-7 to 11-13 the fishing continued steady through the trip with several 100+ # fish hitting the deck. We averaged 20 to 40 yellowfin per day and most were in the 40 to 70 # class. Goodbye to the lupe for now.

Hey guys, the yellowtail counts at the Coronado Islands have dropped a bit the past couple of days. There are a couple reasons for the slower fishing. First reason is the south wind we have had for the last two days. This south wind has dropped the water temp a few degrees therefore making the yellows a little less active. The second reason is the seal ions have stepped up there game. In the last three days we have lost at least 40 yellowtail to the lions. Good news is , the south wind is predicted to end by the end of today. Starting Tuesday we should start to see the water begin warming again. With the warming water the yellowtail should get more active making them easier to hook. With the seal ions acting as a tax collector it just comes down to the fact that we need to hook more fish. When we are hooking more fish both the seal ions and us can get our share. The best way to hook these yellowtail has still been a flylined sardine on 25 lb. test. The Coronado Island yellowtail have not gone anywhere , they are still there. We just need the water to warm a tiny bit so we can start catching them again. Look for better counts in the next few days. Today's photo is of a father and son with 3 yellowtail caught on Saturday. Quality family time in the outdoors is what it is all about ! Capt Mike Pritchard on the Tribute just called in from their 1.5 day trip sponsored by Okuma/Savage Gear, fishing was great. Lingcod was not quite as good as before, we ended up with 56 for the trip and limits of rockfish along with some sheephead and whitefish. The weather was the nicest he has seen and made it hard to get some good drifts in. Retired LA motorcycle officer Joe Beck served as chartermaster aboard the Polaris Supreme, and came back June 16 with the best yellowtail of the boat's five-day visit to Cedros/Benitos. Owner Tom Rothery skippered the trip, and docked his rig at Fisherman's Landing.

Beck got a 36-pound yellowtail with a sardine bait, and won first place. Gene Lujan of Salinas won second place for a 35.4-pound yellow, and Karen Jackson of Acton tied with Tom Mortenson of LaVerne for third place. Both had 32.6-pound yellowtail. Scott Chapman of Mira Loma caught a 41.2-pound halibut, a thick, sand-colored flatfish.

Today our 18 anglers bagged up 60 red rockcod 3 lingcod limits of Boccaccio as well as limits of rockfish. After some morning Santa Ana winds, the weather was absolutely gorgeous.

Captain Ryan Bostian called up early this morning with an update from "The San Diego" out of Seaforth Sportfishing in San Diego, CA. We got in really late last night so we were unable to call in a report. However, we had very good Bluefin Tuna fishing for tuna in the 20 to 40 pound class. Our group of 30 anglers ended up with 54 Bluefin Tuna. We did see some bigger fish jumping around but we did not hook any. The 20 pound bait rod was the ticket with a 1o or 2o circle hooks.

Oct. 15

We had an awesome morning of yellowtailing today. Not long after daylight we started getting 18-25 pounders and it wouldn't stop for the next 4 hours or so. It was lovely. The set up was good. Hardly a breath of wind, bay style sea conditions and the fish were plentiful. I kept day dreaming of the Yellowtail fish head soup and the yellowtail sandwich I'll make when I get home after this trip. Mmmm. Around 11:00 the fish stopped biting but we were planning on it so we took advantage of that and we spent the rest of the day traveling down to the wahoo grounds. We did a wahoo seminar before lunch, then we ate carnitas tacos and then the rest of the day we got our wahoo leaders together while we looked for a kelp with dorados and whatever else we could catch with them though the kelps we did see weren't holding anything other then a few micro tunas. So we'll be in the grounds first light tomorrow in the wahoo mode.
