Sept. 25

Good evening and thank you for reading the Polaris Supreme. If your reading for the boats e.t.a., the boat will be at fisherman's landing at 6 a.m. In fishing news, we had a good day. 160 mixed fish is what we tagged today. Yft, bft, yt, and dorados. In Latin spelled for the most part incorrectly because this is off the top of my head it goes Thunas Albacares, Thunas Thynis, Sariola Dorsalis and Coryphahene Hipperus. The weather was great. The only bad thing was our bait. I'm sure we missed out on a lot more tuna due to the lack of live bait in the water. The yellows and dorado didn't seem to care so much but we saw a lot more tuna in the water then what we caught which was 66. Myself and the fleet is ready for this bait nausea do be over with but until then, we just have to deal with it. So if your coming on a future 1 1/2 day, make sure you bring some jigs. Swim baits and mega baits work well on the slide and the yo-yo iron works good while we drift.

Many of you know Captain Ray Montera who has been involved in sportfishing most of his life. In March, his 32 year old Chris son was severely injured in a C4 blast in Afghanistan. We are holding a fundraiser on October 8th at the Bali Hai on Shelter Island. He is one of our own and we are rallying to support him.

As an Army soldier, Chris Montera was often taken aback when people would thank him for doing the job he loved. On a fateful day in March, he came to face the sacrifice. He was on a dismounted mission and was hit with explosion of C4, which literally blasted and propelled him into a grape field. He suffered major issues with blast lung and severe burns over much of his body. For 9 days he was on ECMO (lung bypass) until he was stable enough to be transported to BAMC in San Antonio for the treatment of his shrapnel wounds and third degree burns. On April 2 a fungal infection set into the wounds on his lower extremities and Chris underwent bilateral AK amputation of his legs. He was further diagnosed with an incomplete spinal cord injury in the thoracic area of the spine at VA Polytrauma Center in Palo Alto.

Through all of this, Chris remains focused and committed to rehabilitation. It is estimated that he will remain in Palo Alto for 3-6 months while he works to regain his upper body strength, which will be necessary for the next stages of rehab in the C5 program at Balboa Naval Hospital in San Diego where he will be fitted with prosthetic legs and with determination will learn to walk again. There is no doubt in our minds that Chris will recover to live an independent life. The goal of this fundraiser is to be able to assist Chris with expenses he will no doubt encounter on his journey to independence.

The event will be held at the Bali Hai Restaurant on Shelter Island On October 8th from 6:00-10:00 pm. There will be food stations serving food from many San Diego restaurants along with a no host bar. A raffle, live, and silent auction will take place during the event along with live entertainment by Mango Bay and World Famous Jim Gibson. The outpouring of support of raffle and auction donations from the sportfishing community, tackle, fishing supply manufacturers, and local businesses has been phenomenal. The evening will be great fun for all and will serve to help a young man who put it all on the line.

Polaris Supreme Trip Update 11-24-2019 We arrived early afternoon to the fishing grounds. We had a good afternoon of fishing on tuna from 12 to 35 pounds. Most of the fish were down toward the lower end of the spectrum. We didn't see much sign of anything else but the tuna throughout the afternoon but were still going to stay another day here to get fixed up on them. Late in the day we decided to pull the anchor and go troll around about 40 minutes before dark but picked up a old seiner anchor that weighed about 500 pounds. That ended those plans! It took us about three hours to get rid of it and fix everything it broke! Quite the tussle. Good weather still a little squally and rainy at times but good seas! See you tomorrow. Well today was another tough day for the whole group. A couple stops on 40-70 lb. tuna and a sprinkling of 100-120 lb. fish, but for the most part slow. The weather is still good and the food great. We had lobster salad and home made cream of chicken soup for lunch, and another superb sushi sashimi layout before a prime cut steak and potato dinner. We'll be looking at a new area tomorrow.

We have a last minute spot available on our upcoming 5.5 day trip departing at 6pm on may 31st. This trip will be fishing offshore as well a cedros and Benitos islands. It is limited to only 18 passengers!! Ticket price is $1400 Contact Jodie at 858-220-1593

Polaris Supreme Trip Update 09-22-2018 Our efforts they were directed at catching Wahoo ! The few we landed were all off shore on kelp patties. We had beautiful weather most of the day. Tomorrow's efforts will be directed at a variety with tuna being the main target. The Polaris Supreme Crrew!

Lifting one of these fish completely off the deck after the long battle may be the toughest part ! Another amazing day of local big fish for captain Matt and the guys. 35 anglers. 20 bluefin tuna. Same tackle suggestions as earlier posts. If you do not own a 2 speed reel. Please rent one from Seaforth Sportfishing when you check in for the trip in the morning.

Back to the Islands starting tomorrow (Nov 1).  Please bring a 40 lb yo-yo setup and a 25 lb bait setup.  For all you jig fisherman.  We will be targeting yellowtail and all other gamefish. Who knows, maybe even a stray Bluefin Tuna.  Passport required.
