nanaimo Fishing Report 2025

 Good evening everyone!  This here is just a teaser.  We're out for a  couple days and then we're dockside for a little.  You won't be reading steady emails for another week and a half or so.  I'm going to keep this short until then.  I'll explain all about our new electronics and things later when we have them more figured out.  For example I'd like to figure out how writing these reports can be more comfortable.  Nevermind I just figured it out.  This keyboard is cordless.  So how does it charge?  Good example there.  I wonder if I  can write this in bed?  Anyhow, we fished some today.  We got in the  zone around 5 and it wasn't boring.  We were pretty much always running on something until 7:30. There wasn't much meat to it though. 
 Just few fish spots mostly.  We have a yellowfin to show for it.  First tuna of the year!
We'll be in this zone tomorrow.  Give it all day and see how it goes.  We'll cover more ground tomorrow with 12 more hours to fish that's for sure.  I'll write much more later I promise.  I"m still figuring this computer out.       

The hours and hours of driving are quickly forgot as soon as your struck by mahi madness. Limits of mahi mahi and 20 yellowtail.

It's been windy off southern Baja for a week or so, and it also blew a couple of days out at the Hurricane Bank. When Polaris Supreme skipper Drew Henderson looked out his wheelhouse window one day, he said it looked like Christmas, he could see so much white out there. At Fisherman's Landing December 4, Henderson weighed the catch for his ten-day anglers. There were tuna, wahoo, and dorado in good numbers. Bert Carlson of Long beach won first place for an 84.9-pound yellowfin, after the fish made a mistake with his sardine on a 5/0 Owner Offshore hook. He said he used 50-pound fluorocarbon leader and 65-pound hollow Jerry Brown Spectra on a Penn 20 T reel and a six and a half-foot Kencor rod. Chris Mohs of Ventura was second, for an 80-pound tuna, and Todd Cameron of Long Beach took third place for a 78.8-pound tuna. He also caught a tuna with an archival tag in it, which will bring him a $500 fee for the tag's return.

Aug. 27-28

Here's a 2 dayer for you all. I forgot to write yesterday's report due to my enthusiasm not being crazy high about it. So we fished in these bluefin grounds all day yesterday and for a few hours in the morning today for not much. Yesterday we were seeing sign of fish around. We didn't see any schools driving around but we'd get a meter mark and stop the boat and after a while we'd see a handful or two sometimes more come under the boat and sometimes we would get a few and other times we wouldn't but at that rate the final tally wasn't anything to write home about so that's probably why I didn't. Today wasn't better. I can't say we ever saw a fish even on the machines. We looked through the traditional area early for nothing then went that way for a while then we turned that way for a while and then we turned that way for a while and then we called it a trip. It means nothing for future trips the way this bluefin is. Tomorrow can be wide open. A hell of a trip anyways if you've been reading you'd know it. The boats clean and everyone on board is stuffed and rested. We'll be getting in at 6:00 in the am tomorrow and then we're departing on the 9 day! I'm really looking forward to it. Getting out of this cool August offshore weather and into the warm wahooey weather. As Joe Beck would say, "yeah baby". July 23
  Today was an enjoyable day out here in the old west.  We didn't catch much fish, but we still had a good time.  I take that back, we didn't keep much fish.  We started this morning in a little zone, and it was full speed jiggin um up.  Stop and go, stop and go, stop and go.  Mostly small yellowfin unfortunately..  There was a sprinkling of good ones in the mix along with some nice yellowtaiil, and it sort of felt like any minute we'd find that school of good ones, but it also kind of felt like we were in the wrong zone at the same time.  Funny how that works.

  By mid morning we were out of there.  We made a move up to the next break.  The fishing wasn't very good for us up there, but the weather all day was excellent, and when you have a boat full of friends aboard, you can't miss.  We did see some cool wild life.  There was a pod of, must of been 10 not sure what kind of whales that swam across the bow.  Nobody else saw, but I saw all of them at once breeching when they were about a mile or so off.  We also ran across a couple pods of Orcas too.  With these we cruised for a while along side of them and checked out the Shamus of the wild.  It was some good viewing let me tell you.

  About an hour before dark, only 7 miles away, a boat got on a school of the better grade tuna and caught a bunch.  Unfortunately for us, we didn't connect before dark more than a half dozen of these but we know where to be tomorrow and we're confident we'll get a bunch.
