fraser Fishing Report 2024

Captain Jodie Morgan called in with a wrap up from their recent 2 day trip last night. We had 75 Bluefin Tuna (in the 30 to 40 pound class), 63 Yellowtail, and a Dorado. We have a 2.5 day trip departing Sunday night with open spots. The trip is $625 and includes your meals and permits. Call Fisherman's Landing at (619) 221-8500 to get in on the action.

Good evening everyone, We spent the day traveling up the line through some snotty weather. However it did ease up after dinner. Hopefully we have the makings for a nice night of sleep tonight before our 530 am eta tomorrow morning. This was a tough trip but everyone kept their head up and persisted through and fished hard the entire time. Although we only had a few windows of biting fish we made the most out of it. There were many familiar faces on this charter and many new faces who decided to join us. We enjoyed having all of you out with us and look forward to seeing you out with us net year. Drew Henderson brought Polaris Supreme home to Fisherman's Landing August 31 following a five-day trip to Guadalupe and Benitos. Guadalupe yellowfin swept the jackpot. The Benitos yellows were good-sized, with one 46.6-pound whopper being the best of the species caught there, by Kub Ito of harbor City. Dan Tran of Hawthorne won first place, for a 98-pound yellowfin he bagged with a sardine on a 4/0 Super Mutu hook dangled under a balloon. He said he fished with 40-pound Big Game line, an Avet LX reel and a Shimano eight-foot rod. Phil Hidey of Arcadia was second, for a 75.4-pounder, and Joe Beck, a regular long ranger and retired LA motorcycle officer won third place, for a 63.6-pound Guadalupe yellowfin tuna.

 Thank goodness for slow speed.  Even though we got a really good jump yesterday, we weren't going to be getting anywhere down below till late tomorrow.  Our speed was horrible.  1.5 knots below average.  But we sped up this morning.  Yup.  This morning we were only making .75 knots below average.  That all costs a whole lot of time when you're traveling great distances so we decided we'd have to be stopping short.  So that's what we did this afternoon, arriving at 4:30.

 Wow!  It didn't take long before everyone had a tuna on.  And they weren't those 8-14 pounders either.  There were some of those, but the majority of them were those 20-30 pounders.  I say again, "wow".  It bit steady the whole time we which is a couple of hours.  During the stop, I had tied a few hooks and cast a few baits out, you know , like we do, and quite a few times the hook would fall off and I would scratch my head and ask myself, " are my knots failing"?  They weren't.  It took crew member Justin to spot a wahoo flying out of the water to figure it out.

 So we wound them in and threw back the marauders.  Before dark, which wasn't long, we had a little binger for 5 and then one for 1 50 pounder.  Say it with me now.  "Wow"!  We aren't going anywhere tonight.  We'l just kick back and see what the day has to offer.

 My buddy Glen caught the 50 pound wahoo today.  Every year for a while now he has been the last member of the little troll team that I like to call, " the troll of shame"  That's the last few people on board who have not yet caught a wahoo.  He will not be joining that team this year.  Nope.  This year he can join the heckling party.  He get's to see what it's like from the other side.  Way to go Glen.
       

 

Hooked 10, but they are mean and like to destroy your gear. Ended with 4 Bluefin all around #70 pounds for our 5 anglers. 

July 16
    Arrive depart day today.  We did the whole routine, I hung out with my baby for an hour and it was time to set sail again.  We left on another 5 day with my buddy Archie and his gang and a few other regulars.  We did well at the bait receivers.  We loaded up on small sardine and left the bay and headed out to do some fishing in the afternoon.  We didn't do much.  A couple of yellowfin is all we caught.  We did see a couple of big schools of 50-80 pound tuna that didn't care we were there at all.  No bites.  We're eating prime rib and heading down in nice weather.  We're going to try for some yellows on the coast in the morning and then head offshore for the afternoon hunting yellowfin.

For those of you Humboldt Marine Biologist graduates, if you see any mistakes or corrections I need to make, let me know. I'd appreciate it.

This is Richie's end of the day report from yesterday. It really has been some incredible tuna fishing since the beginning of June.

1 yellowtail 31 calico bass 82 whitefish 2 sheepshead. Conditions seem to be improving daily but the fish we see are still in a funk. What we’re seeing as far as water temperature, color and current is “text book” for good fishing, only time will tell.
