36 pass. 18 yellowfin tuna 2 yellowtail. Spent most of the day trying to get the lay of the land and we like what we see. Please bring a 20lb bait rod and a 40lb bait rod. A colt sniper or popper rod is always a fun tool but certainly not necessary. Size 2 and size 2/0 live bait hooks. A short piece of flouro always helps. No passports required for offshore trips. A awesome sunset and some action on bigger Bluefin last night. But..... in typical Bluefin fashion lately, the big ones came through and bit baits flylined on gear from 40-60 pound. We had two fish at color in the dark (estimated @ 130 pounds) and somehow the last 4 fish of the day found their freedom (1 spooled, 1 broken hook and 2 pulled hooks). These things can be down right mean.

Let me wine for a few sentences please. With the exception of a 3 day window in the second week, we haven't had two days of good weather in a row in the whole month of August. It's tough to even make it a full day with good weather. Windy August 2013. Screw you August. Needless to say it's not very comfortable traveling right now. Good weather early turned to blown out pre lunch, then backed off for an hour , now blown out again.
OK, I'm done now. Slow fishing today. We had three deals today that didn't bite all that well. 8 out of 1, 14 out of another and then we had 1 for 1 and then we called it a trip. Oh well, we still had an awesome trip. We'll be in tomorrow after 7:00 in the morning and the big guy will be taking it out for a 5 day trip.

We departed on a 6 day trip today. After getting bait we're heading down planning on being at Cedros tomorrow afternoon. Weather for us is good right now but we're planning on it getting bad as we get further down. It's forecasting to get better but for the time being it will be behind us so we won't feel it either way. We'll be at Cedros for a couple days so check back soon for a report.

Captain Mike Pritchard called in this with an audio wrap up from the Tribute out of Seaforth Sportfishing in Mission Bay.
Today we finished with 71 Yellowfin Tuna, 8 Bluefin Tuna, a couple of Yellowtail and Dorado.
We are out on a 3.5 day charter tonight.

Today we had about as good of yellowtail fishing as you can get. Quality to quantity ratio, holy Toledo. 18-25 pound fish and they were biting pretty much as full speed as yellows bite for a couple hours and after that it slowed down but they were still biting well for a couple more. If you have read my past reports you know that surface iron fishing on big yellows is my favorite kind of fishing and it was pretty much wide open on the surface iron. Holy Toledo! I'm not the only one who felt this way either. We have a Polaris Supreme first timer on board, his name is Josh and he may love it more then me. He named his dog after a surface iron. Tady. How cool is that? We've had a tank of mackerel on board for about 3 weeks and we finally let them go today. On hooks that is before getting eaten by yellows. In the late afternoon ewe looked for bait and found some a couple hours before dark and caught a tank full of nice mackerel. We restocked our supply. We made a couple drifts along a kelp line while the sun set and tugged on a few calico bass and now we're headed up to fish tuna tomorrow. Sweet dreams.
