POLARIS SUPREME TRIP UPDATE 10-02-2020 Great fishing today on Bluefin from 35-160 and yellow fin 40-70 pounds in slick weather! The Polaris Supreme Crew!

Nov. 13

                We were back on The Ridge today.  We got to the spot a little after daylight and we found some action after a little bit of looking.  We were making drifts catching wahoo and tuna.  No great numbers on the wahoo.  We caught one per rod.  That's an average though.  Not everyone caught one.  For example, I believe team Oberg caught 3 or 4, and team Grella caught 5.  So it wasn't a great spread but everyone had there chances.  For example, team Holeman went 1 for 7 nd team Henry lost a bunch too.  But when they weren't losing wahoo they were pulling on tuna.  A bit on the smaller side but not too small.  We were tagging the bigger ones.  It was a fun and productive day I thought.  But we always want more.

 

                We left a little while after lunch toward Alijos Rocks and we'll be there all day tomorrow.  We'll most likely have to leave tomorrow night though because the wind, she's acoming.

                                                                               

We are headed south at the moment. Today will consist of mainly rigging and prepping. Primarily for Yellowfin Tuna and Wahoo. We are looking for kelps today to keep them honest but our main focus is on making good speed for tomorrow.

Hello everyone, Today was spent traveling up. A great ride to end a great trip filled with a variety of fish. We would like to thank Billy Stephens for putting together such a great charter! With great anticipation of a light load aboard the Apollo, all 14 of us anglers showed up at the dock early, swapping stories about past trips. We started boarding about 9:30pm and were greeted by Capt JJ Gerritsen and the rest of his crew, we signed in and had a seat for our safety briefing. Capt JJ then asked if we wanted to head offshore for Albacore which had dramatically slowed down the last couple days or head south along the coast for a shot at Dorado and Yellowfin and Yellowtail patty hopping. Without much hesitation we decided to head south and patty hop. We got the feathers in at gray light and started the troll, within 15 minutes the yell of "Hook-up" sang out, unfortunately the mystery fish got away and we were under way again. Five minutes later we heard that yell again, the mystery fish won round two and will live another day. Third time's a charm didn't hold true for us, our third hook-up is still out there in the deep blue. At that point the first troll rotation was fired (which included me) and the second shift took over. Within 10 minutes they had our first fish on the deck, a skipjack, from that point on while looking for patties we boated about 19 skipjack. We found our first patty around 10am and moved in with hopes of a wide open bite, but to our dismay there was nobody home. That held true for the next 8 patties we found, then finally around noon with a mouth full of burger, we heard the call to get ready. Never fails every time your food is done, it's time to drop a line. As soon as our sardines hit the water the patty expolded, we ended up with 1 Dorado and 2 Yellowtail. We only found two two more patties holding fish and ended up with 1 more Dorado and 4 yellowtail. It was now time to head back to port and we again set out the troll lines and managed to pick up 7 Yellowfin Tuna on the way back in. Aug. 19
    Let me explain to you readers why I had such a great day today.  I am in a great mood and here's why.  It all starts at the bait receivers.  I lifted up the lid for the bait and I saw great bait and alot of them in the box.  Then we netted it and it still looked great and after it was in our tanks it still looked great!  It was schooled up and hanging low in the tank looking healthy.  The best part is we got three boxes of it and for the first time for a while, with the mackerel myself and the crew caught this morning, we have a full load of bait on board.  Now we're not totally in the clear yet.  The bait had only been in the receiver for a day so it had no time to cure and that's always concerning.  It also lost some of it's protective scales as we loaded it so there is a danger of it getting sick but so far so good.  We'll know more in the morning.  For the first time in 3 nights we're not running in to fish for bait all night so we get to sleep.  Stoked.  

    The other reason I had such a good day is the good day we had today.  Our timing was great.  I think it started around 4:00.  Our first stop of the afternoon was a good one.  We landed about 50 of those mostly 20-25 pound yellowfin.  After that we went from stop to stop catching anywhere from 5-20 of those beauts.  We had one heck of a departure day and those fish were free.  Stoked.  Oh yeah, the crew and I had a nap today before we got to the grounds and we felt rested and great.  Now I'm showered and am going to go eat dinner.  Stoked.

18 pass. 20 bluefin tuna from 60-80 lbs. Excellent opportunity to hook and land a trophy fish on 40 lb flyline bait with a 1/0 circle hook. 160 gram Flatfalls fished on 60lb was also working well.
