 We had bad odds today.  We fished for wahoo and our fish hooked to fish landed ratio was poor.  It always is with wahoo but I feel today was extra bad.  I think if you're landing half of what you hook with wahoo you're doing OK.  Today at best we were 1/3.  At best.  I called out to 2 of our anglers fishing today and asked what there ratio was for the day and I got a 1/2 and a 1/4.  Then my buddy Dave came up to the wheel house and said he was 0/4.  So that gives you an idea.  If we would've caught half of what we hooked today we would've had a really good day.

 Alright.  I'm done whining.  I'm still glad we came here.  Everybody got there chance at a wahoo and there's still a chance for some more tomorrow.  We're headed inside now and we'll be fishing for wahoo while we're looking for tuna first thing tomorrow morning.  The weather now is fantastic.  A little weird this morning with mixed swell and a wind coming from the southwest but it's beautiful now.

 We couldn't come to an agreement on a price for someone to wear Mark's shirt today.  Justin wanted 200 and Mike said he'd do it for 150 but I couldn't find enough people to chip in.  It was a good one too.  He was wearing a white shirt today, so by 9:00 this morning he could've entered a wet t-shirt contest.  He may have won too if you're into guys like Mark.
        

Polaris Supreme Trip Update 11-13-13

 

Today was a travel/fishing day which means it was slow. We knew we needed another travel day to get where we need to be so we fished yesterday and traveled today as opposed to fishing today and traveling yesterday. We tried really hard though to find something to catch but it was not to be. It wasn't until around snack time before we found any action at all but it wasn't much. We caught 1 big dorado and 1 not so big dorado, lost a couple of wahoo and caught some mostly let them go to grow sized tuna. We'll be in the promise grounds well before daylight and hopefully that's when the fish start biting tomorrow. The weather came down significantly from yesterday and it's currently grease as I write this.

 

P.S. The Mystery writer will be back tomorrow, he needed a little rest.

Well we are back out on the water. We departed today on a 5-day with 24 anxious anglers. There are some new faces mixed in with some regulars. Our weather looks like it is going to be good. We will be heading for open water to look for tuna. Dinner tonight was a superb prime rib, with fresh vegetables and potato.

Hello Everyone, We just returned from our annual Steele 5 day charter. Hosted of course by the one and only Archie Steele. Two things come to mind when this trip rolls around, central valley anglers that love to put fish on the boat and a whole slew of summer produce that we don't normally get our hands on. Yellow Peaches and Asparagus aside we rolled into the yellowtail zone bright and early. There was good sign there and we began fishing. To our pleasant surprise we began landing beautiful 15-20lb yellowfin tuna! A welcome sight, especially because the average size recently was on the smaller side. As we settled in the Yellows got on us pretty good. Helping get the rust off for most of these anglers. Around late morning our current died and we went into a sort of midday lul. We were still able to hang a fish every now and then but not like before. Thankfully it did fire up again around 330, and this time it was hot and heavy. Very steady yellow tail action, had one going the whole time with flurries of 5-7 at a time. All large 20-28lb beautiful yellowtail. Couldn't ask for a better average! We spent the latter part of the trip trying to top off our yellowtail counts and also catch a few exotics. We spent the day searching high and low for Yellows and Dorado. Never got the boomer hit that we were hoping for but we were able to scratch up a handful of Dorado and some more great sized yellowtail. That concluded our five day adventure. Good fishing on great sized Yellowfin tuna, Yellowtail, and Dorado. A great variety trip that kept us on our feet the whole time. Id like to thank Archie again for putting this trip together and look forward to fishing again next year. We are headed out today for five. Will report again soon, Team Supreme

39 pass. 195 skipjack tuna, and 2 yellowtail. Very good action in very good weather.

Capt. Ray Montera will be going out tomorrow in search of yellowtail. If you have ever wanted to catch a 20 plus pound yellowtail. This is the time for you.

Aug. 27-28

Here's a 2 dayer for you all. I forgot to write yesterday's report due to my enthusiasm not being crazy high about it. So we fished in these bluefin grounds all day yesterday and for a few hours in the morning today for not much. Yesterday we were seeing sign of fish around. We didn't see any schools driving around but we'd get a meter mark and stop the boat and after a while we'd see a handful or two sometimes more come under the boat and sometimes we would get a few and other times we wouldn't but at that rate the final tally wasn't anything to write home about so that's probably why I didn't. Today wasn't better. I can't say we ever saw a fish even on the machines. We looked through the traditional area early for nothing then went that way for a while then we turned that way for a while and then we turned that way for a while and then we called it a trip. It means nothing for future trips the way this bluefin is. Tomorrow can be wide open. A hell of a trip anyways if you've been reading you'd know it. The boats clean and everyone on board is stuffed and rested. We'll be getting in at 6:00 in the am tomorrow and then we're departing on the 9 day! I'm really looking forward to it. Getting out of this cool August offshore weather and into the warm wahooey weather. As Joe Beck would say, "yeah baby". The tenth annual George Davis trip aboard the Polaris Supreme arrived at Fisherman's Landing December 5, after spending ten days in southern waters with a super ultra-light load of seven anglers, including chartermaster Davis. There were five tuna over 200 pounds in the catch. One fish was well over 300 pounds. The big fish came in at 347.8 pounds, caught by Kevin Stokes, who is studying video making and cinematography, working on his B. A. in digital video at Mt. Sierra College in Monrovia. The giant yellowfin bit a sardine on a 6/0 Mustad 7691 hook tied to 100-pound P-Line and 130-pound Spectra on one of the boat's rigs: a Tiagra 50 reel and a Calstar 6460 XXH rod. It fought for 35 minutes. "He didn't fight too hard," said Stokes. He just laid there like a big cow. I almost lost him at the end, because his circles went all the way across the stern. They got him with four gaffs and lifted him over the rail. "My best tuna before this one was 180 pounds. It fought harder. I may have this one mounted. Next, I've got to go back to work and to school." Stokes said he does freelance work in video. Eleven-year-old Gunnar Johnston outscored the men by taking two cows; two yellowfin over 200 pounds. One of his fish weighed 217.8 pounds and won second place. The other went 209 pounds. Gunnar goes to Marinotha Christian Academy, and races motocross. His dad Craig Johnston is a construction manager in Orange County and was close by when Gunnar hooked his big cow. "I was up the rail," said Craig, "and I saw him get bent, and I shouted, ‚Дтdon't let go of that rig,' and I saw him pull back harder." Gunnar got the fish to gaff in 45 minutes, after it bit a sardine on a 6/0 Super Mutu hook on 130-pound Izorline fluorocarbon leader tied to 100-pound Momoi line and 130-pound Line One Spectra. He used an Avet 50 reel and a Calstar 6455 XXH rod. "It's my first long range trip," said Gunnar. "It's fun, hooking up and catching these big fish. Craig Johnston said his son had been on one and two-day trips before, but this was his first long range venture. "My best fish before was a 30-pound albacore or a dorado," said Gunnar. "I want to do it again." His dad felt the same way. "He was bit hard at first," said Craig, "but he did his work in the corner." Charlie Middleton of San Pablo took a 213-pounder and won third place. He said it bit a sardine on an 8/0 Gamakatsu hook tied to 100-pound Soft Steel Ultra line and 130-pound Power Pro Spectra on a Penn 80 SW reel and a five and a half-foot Ugly Stick rod. The fight lasted 20 minutes. "The best fishing was during the squalls," said Charlie. "That's when I hooked this one. He took me around the boat twice. There was a lot of 18-inch squid around."
Jim Jacobs of Murietta had never been fishing before. "I didn't know how to hold the pole," he said. Jacobs got a 202.6-pound tuna after a 40-minute scrap. It bit a sardine on an 8/0 Mustad 7691 hook, also on one of the boat's rigs. "My first trip," said Jacobs, "and my first fish."
