The first annual Ocean Tackle Research trip aboard Polaris Supreme returned with skipper Tom Rothery and chartermaster Lon Mikkelsen November 19. The ten-day trip had 20 anglers. "We caught a lot of variety and had good fishing," said Mikkelsen, from Hood River, OR. "We also caught a lot of 40-pound Humboldt squid. The best fishing was on kelp paddies in the warmer water. "We're testing some new OTR jigs," he continued, "and they got bit." Rothery weighed the contenders on the Fisherman's landing certified scales. Clint Campbell of Bozeman, MT won first place for a 65.95-pound wahoo he caught ona silver and pink Raider jig. He said he used 40-pound P-Line, a Daiwa Saltist 30 reel and a Seeker Black Steel 6470 rod. Jon Collins of Menifee won second place for a 52.6-pound skin that bit a pink Catchy Tackle bomb. Collins brought his son into the photo to show off a big dorado. Randy Walker of Huntington Beach was third, for a 48-pound wahoo that snapped up a gold Raider.

Hello and good morning! We will be pulling into the dock in a couple of hours off of our 3 day open group. The fishing was tough and you had to work hard to put a fish on board. This group was one of the hardest fishing and courteous toward each other group I have ever fished with. Good job Katrina and Guy's . We will be at the dock for 3 days before resuming our season.  Here we go again.  Arrive/depart today.  Off with the old, out with the new.  5 days.  That's how long we have on this one. 5 days.  Weather forecast looks terrific for at least the next few days so that's wonderful.  We have another first for me this trip.  Before this trip I have never loaded up with straight mackerel for bait.  Other than the last trip but that was a 1.5 day trip.  This is long range.  Straight mackerel.  That's 3 top tanks, and 2 big slammers full below deck.  All full of mackerel.  So this will be interesting.  It looks like great yellowtail bait.  Not great for chumming but great for catching the yellows, and I'm sure the bluefin will eat them too, just not as well as the sardine.  Oh well.  It is what it is.  We'll just make lemonade, that's all.

 So to start things off tomorrow we will be fishing for those yellowtails.  And most likely, we'll be doing that for the next couple of days before getting in the hunt for the blues.  Action.  We want action.  Wish us luck.

This week had both the best and worst that the Coronado islands have to offer. The highlight of the week was on Tuesday as 20 anglers caught 54 yellowtail. Wednesday saw 65 anglers capture 31 yellowtail. Thursday thru Sunday is when the weather started to turn and as a result the fishing. The past couple of trips we have seen a few schools but they have not been biting at all. Starting this Thursday (18th) the weather is forecasted to get nicer and we have our fingers crossed that the yellows will start to bite again.

How we ended up with only one picture today with such good fishing this morning on yellowtail I don't know? The one picture of Ricky kinda tells it all though! We took off and look for bluefin all afternoon and saw plenty! No biters. Most of the fish was 50 to 150 pounds! We will be trying for yellowtail again tomorrow. Great weather, great fishing and a great group of passengers on Joe Beck and Mal Wagstaff's three day charter. Thanks for tuning in the Polaris supreme crew!

Good evening everyone, Today we started off our Beck 5 day charter. We woke up pointed at a new area of water that has not been prospected yet. The day consisted of warm beautiful water, one kelp, and one boomer school of smaller yelllowfin tuna. The kelp had some great Dorado fishing to get everyone on the board. A truly great area of warm blue water. If there were more kelp or objects in the water it would have been interesting to see what they may have held. Our one boomer school of tuna was awesome to see, these tuna bit like crazy. Literally anything that hit the water from trolling jigs to bare gaffs they tried to eat! We only kept a couple each because we wanted to save room for larger fish, but it was a nice change of scenery seeing biting fish. Trying for yellowtail tomorrow. Wish us luck, Team Supreme

Fishing Update

Our Sat. Sept. 10th 2 Day is a go!!!!!  We are still looking for a few more anglers to join us, but we are going fishing!!!!
