striped bass long island Fishing Report 2025

Good evening everyone, This morning started early with most anglers fishing a dropper loop before grey light. Fishing was slow with a handful of quality 20 pound class yellowtail being caught with a few nice sized grouper coming over the rail. As the morning progressed, fishing started to pick up with anglers hooking fish on flylined baits, the dropper loop, as well as the sliding sinker rig. A couple of these fish were unwilling to leave their rock homes, and were able to wrap the lines in some of the jagged bottom structure before breaking off. As the sun rose in the sky, we were able to pick off a couple more of these fish before we found the right school. A little before noon, we settled into a school of fish that wanted too bite a little bit better. We were able to keep these fish around the boat for the rest of the day, and would hook a handful at a time as they bit in flurries from 2-7 fish at once. Majority of these yellowtail were in the 20-25 pound class and came off the flylined sardine or mackerel. One 50lb class grouper made its way over the rail which fell victim to a sardine flylined on 30 pound test. With the day winding down, we decided to point the boat toward the kelp zone in order to give ourselves an early shot at some more fish in the morning. Oct. 9

Today was mostly spent traveling. We did roll by some wahoo country at lunch time and made a couple of passes with the wahoo jigs but we had no strikes. We were expecting that though as there was already a boat there trolling it up all morning. It was something to break up the ride anyways. The weather was good for traveling so we were stoked on that. Other then that it was normal travel day stuff going on. Little nick knack projects for the crew and relaxation for the rest of the guys. The plan for the next couple of days is to travel all day tomorrow and use the remainder of our bait catching bluefin tuna on our last day which is on Friday.

In other news, I haven't posted it on here yet because I guess your not supposed to till the time is right and now the time is right. Since July my wife and I have been pregnant. Well she's been pregnant. I've just been working. Anyways today was the day we found out the species. Or gender rather. That's right, captain Drew is now captain daddy Drew. We're having a beautiful baby girl. That's right, there's three stages in a mans life and I've reached stage three. You believe in Santa Clause, you don't believe in Santa Clause, and now I am Santa Clause and I couldn't be happier about it. Drink it in people, it always goes down smooth.

Today our 22 anglers landed 44 Yellowtail and 19 Bonito.  Tomorrow is a definite go with a light load.  Get out and enjoy this fishing before the bad weather starts.

We have been having very good Yellowfin Tuna fishing the last couple of days. Ryan Bostian called in to give this report for the San Diego. "I'm calling to give you guys the Coronado Island fish report. Today we went out with 52 passengers and we came back with 74 Yellowtail. Coronado Islands just keeps kick'in them out. 60% of our fish were 6 to 10 lbs, & 40% were 20 to 30 lbs. Come on out with us and enjoy a great time fishing.   We had a good day.  We had a great day actually.  From about 8-12 it was pretty darn good fishing.  We scratched before that and we scratched after that.  And from 5:30 until close to dark we had very good fishing.  The best of the day.  Heck, I'll call it the best of the year for us.  Quality and quantity.  Through out the day the fish was all mixed up.  !4-22 pounds.  This evening I don't think I saw more than 2 fish below 16 pounds.  Most were bigger then that.  Like I said, we had a good day.  And we did it in the wind too.  All day long it was windy, windy, windy.  But we didn't care.  We were catching fish.

  We're going to stay the night and try and get another good hit in the morning and take it from there.  We may mess around up the lee of the Island or take off offshore and look for tuna.  We'll play it by ear.  First things first, we want a good hit.
