Polaris Supreme Trip Report 07-11-2014

Hello Sportfishing Fans. We are off on Bill Stephens annual 5 day with out Bill. He couldn't make it due to work scheduling. What a bummer working all year putting together a trip and not being able to go. Any way we all appreciate it. From all of us on the Polaris Supreme Thanks Bill. We have started the trip off with a bang at the bait receiver's picking up a nice load of 6 in. sardines and cured anchovies to go with a couple of tanks of green back mackerel Drew and the boys caught last trip. It looks like there is some tuna fish to catch very close to home so why not stop and try it? We did and we saw a couple schools of bluefin. One acted like bluefin but on the other we hooked 3 and caught 2-35 pounders. I wish that stuff would move south 150 miles. That would make it more convenient for a long range boat. We also caught a handful of yellowfin. We're going to head south and probably start early in on the coastal grounds for yellowtail before heading offshore to the tuna grounds in the afternoon.

The weather is getting windier the further south we go so we're planning on it wind tomorrow.

Weather kept us new shore today, so we targeted Vermillion Rockfish. Worked out just fine.!

Hello everyone, Today we spent the day working up towards home. Hitting spot after spot until we finally had a shooter of yellowtail at the last minute. A great flurry of fish to end out our fishing time. The yellows we landed were defiantly large, all between 20 and 30 lbs. We have the boat pointed home at the moment. Hopefully we make good speed! The San Diego out of Seaforth Landing, has proven to be one of the top boats in the highly competitive 3/4 day fishing scene. For many passengers it is their first time fishing live bait on a conventional reel, fishing a kelp paddy, or trolling. The crew on the San Diego is second to none in creating successful new anglers. In fact, the crew prides themselves on introducing future multi day fisherman to the sport we all know and love. Ryan Bostian the Owner Operator of the San Diego has excelled through the sport fishing ranks and continues to put out impressive numbers almost everyday. Bostian aka "Booger," the character from the movie "Revenge of the Nerds", (Bostian's favorite movie as a kid), began his career aboard the Dolphin as a Pinhead for Captain John Glawson. Like many of the young Pinheads, Ryan dreamed of one day moving up to a full time deckhand and eventually a Captain. He had no idea how quickly his dream would become a reality. During High School Ryan was able to secure a steady deckhand position on the New Seaforth and worked towards getting his Captains License. After High School he moved over to the Pacific Queen then owned and operated by Ed McEwen. He worked on the Pacific Queen for two years and also acquired his Captains License before leaving sportfishing to go to college. Ryan spent three years at Santa Barbara City and UCSB respectively. He enjoyed the University experience, however, according to Ryan, his skiff, was his favorite class and he often chose to fish while his actual classes were in session! It was obvious to Ryan that his passions were in sportfishing and he decided to return to Southern California. He returned to San Diego and started back as a deckhand on the Mission Belle for Captain David Ikeda. Ryan quickly proved himself, and was soon running the vessel. It was on the Belle, that he truly honed his skills as a Captain and spent three years as a hired skipper. When Ryan was just 23 years old, he had the opportunity to purchase the Mission Belle. He bought the Mission Belle in late 2001 and was the owner operator for 2 very successful years. During his tenure on the Mission Belle, The San Diego, a boat Bostian has often noticed for its great lines, came up for sale at Seaforth landing. He knew that didn't want to let The San Diego get away, so he purchased it as well in 2004. He owned and operated both boats for one year, with the help of Captain Ray "Stinger" Montera, but eventually sold the Mission Belle so he could fully focus on the San Diego. In 2005, Ryan did just that and did a full overhaul of The San Diego. He installed a new RSW system, new John Deere Engines, all new galley, and the coatings were replaced top to bottom. He moved the San Diego to the 5:30 to 5:00 run and has been able to not only keep up the success from the Mission Belle but has even increased his performance on the water. The offshore scene in 3/4 day range is as good as its ever been in recent years. I was able to join the crew of the San Diego on a trip last Thursday 8/15 and had a chance to see the great amount of life that is within 10-30 miles of San DIego. A huge biomass of bait was supporting all forms of life and made for an impressive view of the fantastic fishing San Diego has to offer. Last year was a banner year for the 3/4 day boats and this year seems to be even better with many exotics seriously on the chew. On our trip we landed 16 dorado and 46 yellowtail for the day. Ryan was very optimistic about the overall scene and looks for fishing to keep improving. If you are an angler and want to start your experiences offshore, or are an angler who needs to return the same day, the San Diego is the perfect boat to fish. Do yourself a favor and jump on board The San Diego and experience the best the the local offshore scene has to offer.

Hi friends. We just wrapped up an epic day and a half trip this morning. Drew really set the stage for this two-day trip that we departed on this afternoon.

On Thursday, we landed 16 bluefin before we even rubbed the boogers out of our eyes and from there we picked and scratched on various jig strikes on yellowfin and kelp paddy fish. A little after lunch, Gunny spotted a kelp that wrapped up our day on yellowfin and dorado. Awesome fishing in flat calm weather. Beautiful. The "blackhawk" strikes again. It really was a fantastic trip and we're hoping for more of the same tomorrow. Oh yeah, we also caught 4 slug albacore. Call Susan and book your spots for 2013 ASAP! Do it.

 Wow!  What a day.  2015!  We started it off early on anchor.  The sun wasn't even up yet and we were catching tuna and wahoo.  For about an hour there on anchor we were gettinum.  We had about 30 of those 25-30+ pound tuna and almost 20 wahoo before an hour.  Things slowed so we pulled anchor and got nasty.  We had a couple other bingers for wahoo for about 10 each time, and of course we would catch that big tuna during those drifts.  After that though, us and the 3 other boats that were here pretty much had the wahoo caught for the day.  There was a few left to be had but we mostly caught that tuna up to perhaps 40 pounds the rest of the day.  Not wide open.  We're not "fixed up".  Just steady for most of the day.  Before dark we started "the troll of shame".  I've never done that the second day of the trip.  We got 2 passengers out of there and still have 2 or 3 left who haven't caught a wahoo yet.  Oh they had there chances.  Some of those guys on that team lost 4 or 5 skin today.  But that's wahoo fishing.  Sometimes you eat the bar, and sometimes the bar eats you.

 We're going to try this again in the morning.  I would love to get 40 or 50 more tuna and a couple more handfuls of wahoo.  That would be epic.  After the morning hit we're going to make a run and try for some yellows in the afternoon.
        

Hello and Happy New Year,

The Apollo has recently returned from Mag Bay. We spent the month of December down there doing 5.5 to 7.5 day fly down fly back trips. The cow fishing was tough however we managed some very solid trophies for our efforts. For the 3 trips we did, we caught 8 fish over 200# the smallest went 219# and the biggest went 268#. There was steady action on 20 to 50# tuna most of the time and very good wahoo and dorado fishing to be had.

We are now setting up our schedule for 2013 and have our calendar of available dates on line at apollocharters.com, go to the calendar page and click or scroll the month you want to see. We will be starting the season in Santa Barbara beginning in April and will stay in Santa Barbara thru most of June hoping for a spring sea bass and halibut run this year. There are many prime charter dates available right now so give me a call now if you are interested in setting up a fishing trip for this season.
