Polaris Supreme Update 08-02-2012

 

Hi Anglers. I'd just like to start by thanking our Polaris Supreme passengers on the last trip. You did a fantastic job and the crew enjoyed fishing with all of you. Even you Byler. Congrats to Mr. Myles for taking first place in the jackpot with his 39 pound bluefin tuna. Also want to give a shout out to a Mr. Jack and Mark for staying close behind taking second and third places with a yellowfin and another bluefin. I better see all of you next year.

 

After doing our normal arrive depart chores of offloading fish and passengers, scrubbing the boat, fueling the boat, loading groceries and the new passengers we were off again.

We departed on Tom Chaparros 14th annual charter. This year he turned it into a 6 day. We got our bait and now we are underway. We will do the norm here this afternoon. A lot of rigging up tackle, napping, reading and just hanging out enjoying the day. We have high hopes in the offshore tuna grounds tomorrow so check back and I'm sure we will have a good report.

Hi friends and happy October to all of you. First off, I was going to smack that weatherman right in the mouth this morning but he was pretty dead-on with his prediction of this evenings weather, so we cool again. Our ride back to San Diego Bay is a beautiful, moon-lit excursion -- a perfect ride for a fillet mignon dinner. The weather wasn't all that bad today, just about ten knots more breeze than predicted and the seas were spaced out and low today so it was just windy. Like I said, the weather now is just dandy so I can't be all that bummed about the excess wind.

We started off this morning in the eastern edge of things and although my gameplan for the day was right on, my execution was about an hour or so behind. We were hoping to catch a bunch of yellowfin and dorado this morning and then roll out to the west all day, get to the western edge and look for bluefin and albacore to end the day. After screwing around in the eastern zone and having not caught a fish for a couple of hours we slowly motored out to the west and just before lunch -- thinking I was hot stuff with thirty tuna and a dozen dorado on the boat -- a boat to to the west got on a kelp that ended his day. Ugh, just where I wanted to be too. After that, we plotted the position and kicked her up on our westerly tack to get out there by the afternoon time.

The bad thing about this whole scenario was that we never found the kelp our "buddy boat" bagged for us. The good news is that we found one of our own. A big, beautiful lady-of-a-kelp with a "smaller" sister about a thousand yards upswell of her and once we set up the drift for both of them, it was on like donkey kong. We had a really fun afternoon pulling on 12-22 lb. yellowfin tuna and a really nice grade of dorado to go with the tunas as well. It wasn't WFO at all, just a steady pick with three to five going all the time. The gang had a ball and before you knew it, we were finished up with our daily limit of yellowfin tuna and dorado. Better late than never.

The one thing that I'm feeling down about is the fact that we never made it out to the western edge to look for bluefin and albacore. But we had a fine day of fishing on yellowfin and flatheads and the passengers are pumped. Good times! We'll be in tomorrow morning at 0600 hours and we'll be back out on Wednesday night for another day and a half trip. We'll chat with you then. I'm sorry for the long report. Now this was the real deal today. Nothing short of epic cow fishing. Scott released a 110 lb., 170 lb. 180 lb., another 110 lb., 175 lb., and a 150 lb. tuna. He kept a 220 lb., and a 250 lb. tuna. Bob released a 180 lb., 130 lb., 190 lb., and kept a 220 pounder. Al released a 190 lb., 125 lb., 185 lb., and a 140 pounder. Craig released a 135 lb., 150 lb., 145 lb., 180 lb., 190 lb., another 180 lb., and kept a 190 lb., and a 193 pounder. Roger released a 110 lb., and kept a 204 pounder. Sheridan released a 125 lb., 170 lb., 150 lb., 160 lb., and 190 pounder. Tom released a 110 lb., 160 lb., 150 lb., 185 lb., and kept a 221 lb., and a 205 lb. tuna. George released a 120 lb., 130 lb., 100 lb., 185 lb., 180 lb., and another 100 lb., and kept a 205 pounder. Wow what a day. We're all just shaking our heads at how wild it was. Lunch was calamari with a red sauce and dinner was veal chops. We'll see you tomorrow.

Nice bluefin making for a great starter and finisher for our 6 day trips. Next one leaves August 23rd!

We scratched away at some excellent grade yellowtail today. Really nice quality. Most over 30 lbs. The weather is flat calm, gorgeous. We hope the volume of fish we are seeing will bite better tomorrow. Susan said we still have some open spots on the upcoming five days if you can get away give her a call. Thanks, Tommy and crew

We arrived at the Island around 1 pm. We did a lot of searching before we got the anchor down and began to fish. Immediately we began seeing fish boiling around and on the sonar. However bites were few and far between. We did land a couple larger models but it did not do justice to what was around. Hopefully they want to bite tomorrow. Here we have Jim starting us off with a nice Yellowfin Tuna.

Hi friends. I missed you all, a lot. I'm back to tell some stories to y'all and inform you of our activities. We departed this morning on Tom Chaparro's 6-day adventure with his closest friends and family. Tommy and myself have given Drew and Matt Damon, and Ali some time off and we've also brought along a new galley assistant and her name is Daneen. We call her D and she's awesome and a pleasure to have on-board. Hard-working, funny, and happy to be here. She left such a great impression on me, I actually cleaned up the salad station after I served dinner and anyone who knows me, knows that I make a mess preparing salads and usually never clean it up. I couldn't help but chip in for the new girl. She's rad and all of our passengers are going to be thrilled to meet her and The Supreme Team just keeps getting stronger.

Anyhow, enough about our stellar crew, what I will talk about that's stellar is our bait, our weather and our attitude. We're pumped to point this beautiful boat on a southerly course and get down to the local Bluefin grounds. We did have one stop during Chef Shawn's prime rib dinner and landed a handful of BF during the melee. Good times!

Anyways, we're out. We'll be up 05:30 hours tomorrow morning trying for some Bluefin and we'll see what happens. We'll report back to you tomorrow. Wish us luck and good night.
