Polaris Supreme update 08-15-2012

              Our day started off today in flat calm weather and high hopes that we were going to score big.  We worked our water break way out to the north west away from where we have been catching most of our fish.  About 20 miles away I thought "What the heck am I doing?  What if they start getting them?"  We made a sweeping turn out to the west and immediately found our first small paddy of the day.  We were immediately rewarded with a frenzied bite of mixed yellowfin, bluefin, dorado and small yellowtail which were released.  When the dust had cleared we had about 35 mixed fish.  And back up to the wheelhouse and mast we all went to find another one.  After about a half hour of searching and lunch time approaching , we hadn't found another one.  And then of course, my worst nightmare occurred.  Signs of the fish starting to bite 20 miles back where I left from.  This is one of those times you wish you had a button you could push just once a trip to put you somewhere instantly.  
Of course you'd probably want to push it again and go back where you
just were once you got there.   That's probably why they don't make such
a devise.  That and the lack of technology to do so.  Anyway, off we went two hours south.  Back to where we started our morning.  As we arrived it turns out that only one boat had really caught much of anything and he was definitely one of those lucky guys.  He had had a phenomenal day on that small grade yellowfin and bluefin.  As the passengers began to break down their gear and we headed north, our day went from slow to the insane.  We spent the rest of the hours until heading for home late, in a wide open bite for small yellowfin and bluefin.  With the odd big yellowtail, 18 pounds or more and dorado, 15 pounds thrown in.  Talk about carrying around a horseshoe and waiting until the last minute to use it.  It was a fantastic topper to Eric Rogger's 28th ? or 30th long range charter with me.  And also a befitting ending to Alex Crandall's last hurrah before he heads off to Afghanistan.  Alex it was awesome to have you and your dad on board to spend time together. heading up the line and into San Diego a couple hours late tomorrow.

The old timers used to say “ wind from the south, fish close their mouth”. Today we had a brisk south wind all day and the yellowtail were a bit off. We saw plenty of fish and managed to land 83. Flylined baits and yo-yo jigs were the best today.

Polaris Supreme Trip Report 09-05-2016 Hello Supreme Fans. Our day started off Early in the gray light, but with much bigger fish around the boat. Some of the bluefin tuna we saw blowing out were well over 150 pounds! We had our fair share of hook ups and heart breaks throughout the day most of the time we had 3 to 4 fish going. Rob Gledhill had one on close to 3 hours only for it to gain it's freedom right next to the boat! Gary Jones was one of the lucky ones. After a long hard battle he lands one that taped out at 91 pounds! We have really gotten worked over the last two days on this big fish. It is really hard to hook them on anything heavier than 50 pound test, you fight them for long battles and then after a half an hour to two hours you lose it and have to start all over again. We are definitely getting our butts kicked. It's really some fun fishing, the catching could be a little bit better. Wish us luck as we plan to do battle again tomorrow with the mighty mean bluefin tuna. The Supreme Team!

This past week was all about yellowtail and warm water. 40 - 115 yellowtail per trip with a sprinkling of dorado sums up the past week. I attached a photo of the terrafin chart for our area to show you guys all the warm water. Anything over 70 degrees is considered warm and as you can tell we have plenty of it. As a matter of fact finding the cooler water has actually been the key to catching these yellowtail. The most common question this week was "when are the yellowfin going to show up". While I don't have a crystal ball to tell you exactly when they are going to show up. I can tell you that they have made a major northern movement over the past week and there has been yellowfin tuna caught as close as 60 miles.  Good evening folks. So today was a rather tough day of fishing. The weather certainly didn't cooperate with us for the entire day. Mixed up choppy seas with a little better than 15 knots of wind. As we all know that makes for less than ideal fishing conditions, but the guys still hung in there and when it came time to stop on a breezer, meter mark or a nice size kelp patty, then still got out and got their lines wet so bravo to them.  We still managed to scratch up a few yellowfin throughout the day with a couple tuna right at Sundown to take us into wine tasting and dinner. They always say that a tough day of fishing can be cured by a great meal and that was sure the case today. Chef David certainly out did himself once again with a beautiful fillet mignon and king crab leg meal for us tonight. That put some smiles on some faces without a doubt. But that's trhe great thing about this group, they aren't out here just to fish, they love to enjoy the full experience.  To wrap up the night, we dished out probably the tallest "decadent" chocolate cake a la mode that I've ever seen! Wow! That sent them to bed with full bellies and a nice ride up to tomorrows tuna grounds for round 2 of tuna fishing. Wish us luck and check back in tomorrow for the days run down.

 P.S. The entire group here would like to send a huge congratulations to Mr and Mrs. Taylor Gledhill as they welcomed their healthy 7lb 17oz 19.5 inch baby girl into the world today at 4:20. After a juicy prime rib dinner and a movie last night, the guys were fast asleep. Today after breakfast we did our tuna and wahoo fishing seminars. After lunch we spent the afternoon reading, leaders, rods, reels, and putting together a few spare gaffs. Our bait looks beautiful and the weather going down great. There is a couple of guys who couldn't make it this year that we already miss being around. Charlie we miss you doing laps. Hope your wife is doing well. And Jimmy, Javier said today would have been a great day for bean soup! Our evening consisted of chicken Cordon Blue, another movie and back to bed. Tomorrow we may do a little fishing for meals and hors d'oeuvres. We will let you know how it goes.

Capt Ryan Bostain checked in from the San Diego the 3/4 day boat out of Seaforth Landing to report that the Yellowtail are starting to bite down at the Coronados. Yesterday we had 96 Yellowtail and today we 114 Yellowtail for 30 anglers, come on down the are biting everything. We are getting them on surface iron, yoyo jigs, dropper loops and fly lining baits, the water is very nice and clean. When you come down make sure to bring your passport as it is required.
