We started in the rain, loading passengers and loading bait. Now we're full steam rolling down in nice weather. There is reports of bad weather down below but we're traveling the correct direction for it not to effect us. We hope this trip is in perfect time with the perfect weather. We'll most likely start the trip off with an afternoon of yellowtail fishing before we decide on where we're going from there.

Hi friends. We had ourselves a pretty eventful day for a rather slow day of Yellowtail fishing. I'm not going to lie; I think the entire crew had visions of hundred-plus fish drifts and not looking at breezers of non-biting fish, but rather breezers of snappin' fish. Well, the Bluefin worked their magic on our favorite Yellowtail hole and the Yellowtails acted just like Bluefin all day. We saw multiple breezers and we'd be lucky to capture two or three fish. We did have one nice drift this morning but for the most part we just picked and scratched to make a score. But, we did what we had to and made a day of it.

Other notable events of the day: We started bronzing at 0622 hours, it was sunny and toasty out for the majority of the day. We also caught and released about a dozen Black Sea Bass, we had a nice snap on the Calicos, Stephen Pistone took a sabiki rig hook to the finger, and Mark did everything that you would expect of Mark. I'll just leave it at that.

Anyhow, we're on our way up to finish off our trip at the Bluefin grounds and Chef Shabba and Shawn are kicking out sesame seared Ahi with fried rice and veggies. Tasty. We arrived at noon and had a good hit on the 80-100 lb tuna, but we didn't see anything bigger. Weather is sloppy again, but got nice in the afternoon when we went looking around. So we will keep looking for the big ones and check back with you tomorrow.Thanks,Tommy and crew

    Today was awesome.  We woke up drifting catching fish and that's about what we did until dark.  I'm not kidding you.  We moved the boat just a handful of times but never for more then 10 minutes.  It was drifting with always at least one on the hook.  In the morning until after lunch it was mostly bluefin in the 30-45 pound range with the occasional 60-80 pounder.  I have to tell you that that's a much more manageable grade.  It's a much better fish to start off on than those 60-80 pounders.  Don't get me wrong, you know I love catching those beauts but they make a much better cherry than ice cream if you know what I mean.  We had that kind of day where if we catch them tomorrow it will be the cherry on top.  The rest of the day we got into yellowfin tuna mode and it was game on for those fish.  Tommy decided to save our sardine on board it being they were feeding on the anchovy that went over the side so that's what we used.  Chovy baby.  I can't ever remember fishing anchovy for tuna on this boat.  I have to go back to my mission bay days to remember that but I didn't forget how to do it.  I wrote this in the beginning of the season and I'll write about it again.  If you're coming on a future trip, please remember to bring the lost art of anchovy fishing skills.  A big part of that is an anchovy rod and reel.  Something light that's meant for 20-25 pound test with a nice free spool to help you toss those anchovies away from the boat.  I hate to say it but if that means you need to bring your coffee grinder so be it.  
    The weather is still good!  Man I hope this can hold up for at least my buds on the upcoming Heil 5 day trip leaving the day after tomorrow.  We're staying put right here for our last day fishing tomorrow.  We're hoping we can get more of the 60-80 pounders tomorrow but we will be stoked with the 30-45's as well.

We are going to run an open party limited load trip on Sunday March 2nd. The trip will cost $130 and will depart at 9pm on the night of the 1st. If you are interested in going we will be looking for squid and targeting seabass in the morning before trying to fill our limits with tasty rockfish. Drew Henderson brought Polaris Supreme home to Fisherman's Landing August 31 following a five-day trip to Guadalupe and Benitos. Guadalupe yellowfin swept the jackpot. The Benitos yellows were good-sized, with one 46.6-pound whopper being the best of the species caught there, by Kub Ito of harbor City. Dan Tran of Hawthorne won first place, for a 98-pound yellowfin he bagged with a sardine on a 4/0 Super Mutu hook dangled under a balloon. He said he fished with 40-pound Big Game line, an Avet LX reel and a Shimano eight-foot rod. Phil Hidey of Arcadia was second, for a 75.4-pounder, and Joe Beck, a regular long ranger and retired LA motorcycle officer won third place, for a 63.6-pound Guadalupe yellowfin tuna.
