Hi friends. A wrap-up of our full day and a morning down here is one that makes any angler giddy. One reason and one reason only can draw out the best and worst in some anglers -- wahoo. We had some of the better wahoo fishing we've had in a few years that I can remember and as the day progressed, they just kept getting bigger. We had ourselves a really fun day down here and in the afternoon time, we had a pretty decent sign of that better tuna, boiling mere feet from the boat rambled up some excitement in us.

Two problems. One, was the lack of current. Two, was the sharks. We had to get creative to hook one and you had to, as Drew puts it "leave your purses in your staterooms" and pull on those fish. Drew had to eventually lead by example and landed a beauty of a tuna on a scad chunk. Inspirational. Although, we only landed one tuna of size that evening, the wahoo bite from the hours prior really had spirits high. We tried to repeat our catch this morning but it was clear that we did a good job of catching the ones that were here. Hopefully, a few more nests move in for our code boat to experience the same type of fishing we had.

At around 1000 hours, we had to begin our journey home that will take us a full day and a half. Normally, I'd be somewhat pumped for travel days but I finished Suzanne Collins "The Hunger Games" too quick (my goodness, Katniss, love Peeta!) and the second book of the trilogy isn't on the boat (damn you, Shawn!). Kinnicut has the third but I hear that the third one is lame. Ugh, rather than reading a good book and napping, I'll just have to do some work to pass the time.

With that, our weather was beautiful all day but is now a little windy and bouncy. Nothing crazy, it's no bronzing weather though. Can't have flat calm and sunny for a week straight, I guess. We'll report our ETA tomorrow night. See ya.

P.S. Before I go, I have a couple of things that I learned today, thanks to Gunny.

1) Gunny is deathly afraid of crocodiles and alligators.

2) Every black man in horror movies dies first. Gunny has strong evidence to support this. I had no idea.

We departed today with Chaparro's annual lite load charter. This is his 10th year! A fun group as always and the guys are anxious to get their lines wet. We got a nice load of bait and headed out west looking for albacore and yellowfin with only a few landed.

There were plenty of seiners. Our weather continues to be good. As we dine on steak and lobster we are looking forward to tomorrow to do some kelping. Our web master who handles all our updates will be out fishing himself for the next few days, so there won't be any reports posted until Thursday. Give Susan a call if you have any questions. Today we departed on Joe Beck and Mal Wagstaf's annual six day trip, which is our first post-boat work excursion! We left the bay around 11am with a great load of mixed sized sardine and mackerel. Shortly after departing the bay, chef Mike prepared the guys bratwursts with a broccoli salad. We are now working our way south to the yellowfin grounds. We will be in that yellowfin zone by morning, but for the time being we are keeping our eyes out for those giant bluefin. The area we are in there are about 30 or so live bluefin tuna pen boats that are each towing two pens each. We have also seen a couple big blue whales that were heading north-bound. Hi friends. Nothing like a two-day trip, pulling on 50-75 lb. Bluefin tuna beyond normal two-day ranges. It just goes to show the value of these two-day trips leaving around noon, fishing all day the next day and then arriving back to San Diego in the late morning. Everything worked out for us on this trip and while fishing for the majority of the boats out here was tough (lots of schools were located but did not bite), we got lucky and found a really nice school of those beautiful Bluefin tuna's. We drifted all afternoon on this particular school and if you wanted a chance to hook one of these trophies, it wasn't rocket science to do so. It was some good fishing for a while there and although our casualties were high, we managed a very healthy score on the Bluefin along with a few "Cedros-grade" Yellowtail off of a kelp. We somehow managed to give every angler on-board the experience of a five-day trip in one day. Just going to show everyone, the advantage of these two-day trips.

So that is all. We'll be arriving to San Diego tomorrow around 1100 hours and we'll be taking a few days off before we get back on a couple of short range trips. Be sure to be on the lookout for more of these two-day trips in the near future. Thanks for checking in.

 We had bad odds today.  We fished for wahoo and our fish hooked to fish landed ratio was poor.  It always is with wahoo but I feel today was extra bad.  I think if you're landing half of what you hook with wahoo you're doing OK.  Today at best we were 1/3.  At best.  I called out to 2 of our anglers fishing today and asked what there ratio was for the day and I got a 1/2 and a 1/4.  Then my buddy Dave came up to the wheel house and said he was 0/4.  So that gives you an idea.  If we would've caught half of what we hooked today we would've had a really good day.

 Alright.  I'm done whining.  I'm still glad we came here.  Everybody got there chance at a wahoo and there's still a chance for some more tomorrow.  We're headed inside now and we'll be fishing for wahoo while we're looking for tuna first thing tomorrow morning.  The weather now is fantastic.  A little weird this morning with mixed swell and a wind coming from the southwest but it's beautiful now.

 We couldn't come to an agreement on a price for someone to wear Mark's shirt today.  Justin wanted 200 and Mike said he'd do it for 150 but I couldn't find enough people to chip in.  It was a good one too.  He was wearing a white shirt today, so by 9:00 this morning he could've entered a wet t-shirt contest.  He may have won too if you're into guys like Mark.
        

Captain Mike Pritchard called in this afternoon to let us know that The Tribute is running an overnight trip departing tomorrow night. We will be fishing the Coronado Islands for Yellowtail. The boat's E-mail program is down at the moment but Tommy called in to say that fishing for yellowtail was very good on Tuesday and they left them biting. Today they fished tuna and had very good fishing on two stops for bluefin and yellowfin. The weather is up but Tommy says that the passengers are hanging in there. The boats eta tomorrow is set for 7:00 am and hopefully the E-mail issues will be taken care of. Any changes in the eta, please call the office at 619 390 7890. Thanks, Susan.

Hi folks. We rode with the wind and swell last night and found ourselves in the familiar Yellowtail spots. Our first spot of the day produced quality sized Yellowtail on long drifts. This mornings fishing was a yo-yo fisherman's paradise on the Polaris Supreme as we hooked most of our fish on the heavy jigs. We didn't exactly set the world on fire with our numbers but we always managed a handful or two on every drift until after lunch when things finally dried up. It took us a couple of hours to locate something that we liked and our last couple hours of the day were spent bent. Sonar schools of Yellowtail charged the Supreme with reckless abandon and it was as good as it gets there for a while. This particular spot was surface iron-friendly so that's always exciting and we finished our day on a high note. The fish we caught this morning were in the 18-22 lb. range and the fish this afternoon were a notch smaller. Big fish of the day was a 30 pounder caught around dinner time by Dan "Re-Ride" Burns.

So that is all. Just another solid day of Yellowtail fishing and with the offshore weather still on the up, we're going to spend a half day here tomorrow and then move on up the line back to the tuna grounds. Fishing sounds the same as it has from the area. If you're the lucky boat, you're pumped. If you're not, well, it's going to be a long day. Anyhow, we're going to give it a try for our last day of fishing but before we get too ahead of ourselves, we need to do some more work on Yellowtail. Wish us luck.

Good evening friends. It sure felt like a slow day from the tuna grounds today but judging by the scores from the other boats, we did just fine. Some boats would've killed for our score and some boats would've said that we did have a slow day, so we were smack-dab right in the middle and the range of scores was quite large. Some boats really had a tough time of it today and some boats were the lucky few that managed to get a nice hit on the Yellowfins. We had a slow morning with a jig strike here or there and then mid-day, we had a couple of schools that rushed the boat and we had a nice whack on 'em to boost the count and our morale. But other than a few more jig strikes later in the day, it was a mediocre day and with the weather up and forecasted to stay up, we're heading down to do some Yellowtail fishing tucked behind an island somewhere. With the lack of sign for most of the fleet, we feel that the fish in the area are just weather sensitive, so we'll give them some time to regroup and will give them a try later in the trip when things hopefully settle down with the weather.

So that is all. Our traveling weather is decent and we're getting prepared for an island invasion of some sort. Wish us luck and we'll chat with you manana.

Good evening everyone. We arrived to Fisherman's Landing this morning promptly at 0630 and busted out the usual routine of unloading passengers/gear, unloading fish, refueling, cleaning, outfitting the bunks with fresh linens, loading groceries, and loading a whole new batch of passengers and their gear. This morning, there was no particular order to all of our chores as eight long-range boats returned to the various landings and we just wanted to get the heck out of that mess at the top of the docks. Kudos to the "Red Shirts" as they were just as busy as us unloading gear, unloading fish, organizing carts, pushing carts, and loading everyone in a civilized manner. Anyhow, here are the big fish winners from Ryan Christianson's Let's Talk Hook Up four-day adventure: Henry "Blue" Maine - 58.8 lb. Yellowfin tuna, Kiyoshi Nakagawa - 34.0 lb. Albacore, and Kevin Graff - 31.8 lb. Albacore. Congratulations to the gang and we issue a big thanks to Ryan for putting on a fine trip.

Later this morning, we departed on our annual Bob Vance/Joe Beck five-day extravaganza with a bunch of their good pals. We tried fishing the local-local zone but for fear of losing our title of being a "long-range" boat, we decided to motor on down to the hot area from the past couple of trips. Reports still sound good on the Yellowfin tuna and one boat saw a few schools of those bigger Bluefin and they managed to land some 60 lbers. We'll be giving it a go tomorrow morning at first light. July 20
    We had another slow day today darn it.  It's crazy how fast things change out here.  One day you're gettinum and the next day you're not.  We tried for a few yellows this morning and caught to less than that.  It wasn't long before we were out in the deeps hunting tuna.  We saw very little.  We covered alot of ground today for a few over 20 on the tuna.  They were mostly jig strikes spread out throughout the day.

    The weather out here is fantastic and we're enjoying our ride up.  I can smell the filet's on the grill now Oscar style.  Thanks again Archie, the group was great.  We'll be in tomorrow and yes, departing on another 5 day.
