owens river Fishing Report 2024

This is amazing we have fished 6 days out of 6 days. We fished 4 days in California and 2 days in Mexico and caught over half a dozen different game species. We wrapped up today in California fishing Bluefin and Yellowfin with good success. The top 3 fish at the scales will be bluefin. Thanks Tom Chaparro and gang for a great trip. Drew Henderson brought Tommy Rothery's Polaris Supreme home after a five-day trip with 24 anglers to Guadalupe Island. He said he got some fish at Westy's Hole, but the sharks were bad there. Marco Ramirez of Torrance won first place for a 74.8-pound tuna. He nabbed the yellowfin on a sardine and a 2/0 Gamakatsu hook. He said he used 40-pound Seaguar fluoprocarbon and 80-pound Power Pro Spectra on a Sealine 50 reel and a five and a half-foot Lamiglas rod. He remarked that he almost got too tired to reel during the one-hour fight. Michael Rayner of LA was second, for a 71.2-pounder, and Rodger Kang of Fresno tied him with a tuna of exactly the same size.

Sep. 13

Good evening to all readers. We're fishing the second annual Bogart Construction short range trip. We departed this evening around four, got some bait and are currently serving our beautiful cuts of the prime rib as I write this. We'll fish all day tomorrow and head it back for home on yet another turn around. It sounds like it was a down day today in the offshore grounds with not so good of weather so we're glad we were at the dock today. Tomorrows forecast shows the wind backing off and with that hopefully the fish float. We'll see.

Nice mixed bag of yellowtail ,barracuda and kelp bass for our 27 anglers today.

What a delicious meal whipped up by Chef Roger and galleyman Gringo! Simply outstanding!

Real good fishing today in the morning on 70-125 lb. tuna. The afternoon seemed like it was going to be slow, but low and behold late in the day we got what we think is the biggest cow of the season so far. It taped out at 364 lbs. We see what the scales say.

Fall is probably our favorite time of year. 2 yellowfin 6 dorado 57 yellowtail 18 skipjack.

 Well, we got our tail on today.  We started up there and caught a few, then we went there and had a couple of real nice drifts.  Good tailing on medium sized yellows.  We'll call them 12-14 pounders with a few smaller and a some in the 16 pound range.  We were completely OK with them. I spent my whole time there in the pit with my butt in the air stapling tags on the customers fish while the rest of the crew were gaffing.  After a couple good drifts, and I mean good ones, the fish stopped biting.  No one knows why, they just quit biting so we had to make a move again.  Now if I had remembered there was a Charger game on at that moment it would've been a great time to listen to it being we were making a 3 hour move.  But I forgot all about it.  I was too busy thinking of our next move and the future moves of this trip.  It was a good game too.  If you weren't paying attention we beat the 2014 super bowl champs.  !0 point under dogs.  Beat them up.  That's right Seattle.  Look out nation.

 We didn't catch much when we arrived to our new hot zone.  A couple of handfuls of nice yellowtails and then it got dark so now we sit on anchor.  We can safely fish one more day here before the storm pushes us out of here.  Which direction we'll go?  I'm not sure yet.
