56 bluefin 42 yellowfin. Long drifts keeping 1-5 fish in the 20-50lb class going all day. Rubber banded sinkers and colt snipers reigned supreme. 40-60lb line for both techniques.

 Well we had some action today.  We fished our wahoo/tuna honey hole.  It wasn't red hot but we made some drifts and caught some fish.  Our last couple schools we saw before lunch didn't react so we took a tour.  We found some tuna a couple hours into the tour.  The bigger ones.  The 25-35 pounders but we weren't ready.  Some were napping or lounging.  It hit us quick.  Everyone that made it out hooked up but it didn't last long.  We got on a couple of more deals after that but they were smaller fish.  12 pounders so we continued on our tour.  We looked for yellowtail in the afternoon but like everywhere right now it seems, there wasn't any current. 
  The weather straightened out for us today.  It was nice again.  We have one day left to fish and we want to do it catching yellowtail.  The elusive yellowtail.  That's usually the fish we don't have trouble finding but we've struck out this trip on them thus far.  We have about 30.  We want more so that's what we'll do.  From where we'll be fishing we can fish until lunch but then we have to hit the road for home.

 I forgot to mention yesterday how steamy it is down here.  Steamy, like we're boiling a giant pot of water or something, I can't explain it.  Anyways when you walk out of an air and conditioned part of the boat it's like POW!  Holy Toledo!  But after a little bit you get used to it and it's not that bad until you find some AC again and then come back out and it's like, POW again.  Anyways, we had a little more wind this morning which helped with the kite fishing and it stayed one direction which helped with the anchor fishing.  We had another decent morning.  George caught another over 200 and his bud Craig joined him with a 207.  The sharks weren't as ferocious this morning and this afternoon I'd have to say they weren't much of a problem at all.  We really did a number on the wahoo yesterday because today we only caught a few but thankfully we had a great day on the anchor starting mid morning or after lunch, I already can't remember.

 The boxed and vacuum sealed flying fish from Florida the gang brought down really paid off today.  That's mostly what I did this afternoon was rig flying fish for the kite and help gaff tuna when they needed me. For a couple hours they were hitting the baits on the kite as fast as we could put them out.  Most of what we're catching is in the 100-130 pound class. The big story was Charlie this afternoon.  He caught 3 bigguns.  A 194, 213, and a 204.  A nice afternoon for Charlie.  About half the gang are already releasing anything under 200 pounds.

 For dinner we had a lovely corned beef and cabbage and potato meal.  Afterwards I was waiting for the shower and i noticed all the tuna that was under the boat and I pointed it out to the chef.  So he went down there and sinker rigged a sardine right on top of one of the tunas heads and he got himself a 177 pounder shattering his previous personal best of 35 pounds.  Way to go Mike.  Most people at the time were tying on new top shots on there reels.  They all new what was going on and that they could most likely do the same but nobody did a thing.  Everyone was fished out so that shows we had a good day.  You just can't fish 24 hours a day.
         

 

This past week has been all about chasing yellowtail. The amount of yellowtail we have been seeing at the Coronado Islands has been very impressive. The fish counts have not been a representation of how much fish is in the water. Stopping on a school of 300 yellowtail and only hooking 1 has become very common. On Friday we managed to catch 30 yellowtail and Saturday produced 20. These fish are still running in the 20-30 pound range with multiple fish over 30 in the past week. Fly lined sardines on 30 lb. yo-yo lures on 40 or 50 lb. as well as surface iron on 40 lb. have all been producing fish. These yellowtail have been a challenge to hook mainly because of all the bait in the water. When some of the bait goes away and these fish settle in. 50 to 100 fish days will become common. It turned out it was a travel day today. There wasn't any fish in the water we looked at today. On the way down we went through an area in the dark loaded with fin bait so we thought we'd look at it on the way back to see if any game fish found the area but they hadn't. The weather was fantastic today and we got a lot done. All and all we had a great time this trip. Most the passengers on board had never been on a deep sea fishing trip before and they all had a blast pulling on those beautiful yellows at Cedros. Thank you Mr. Tom Pfleger for making this trip possible. We all appreciate you and all our charter heads and all our passengers for that matter.

We're leaving on a 2 day trip tomorrow morning. That trip is designed to fish a full day at 200 miles if need be. If that's where the best fishing was we could get there on a 2 day where on a 1 1/2 trip you'd be limited to within about 110 miles for a full day of fishing. The best fishing is within 100 miles of San Diego so the cool thing about tomorrows trip is we'll have time to fish a handful of hours before dark tomorrow. Oct. 12

Well we had a super busy day aboard the Polaris Supreme today. It all began at 4:00 a.m. when the crew woke up and started pulling our catch of cows and wahoo out of the fish holds. We tied up dockside at 6:00, off loaded all the passengers gear and then the fish. It was a long process. We got everything up to the top of the docks and then came the weigh in. I believe we ended up with 16 over 200 pounds and the one we taped at 297 ended up being just that. Damn. 3 pounds off. What a bummer? It was still a personal best for our friend George. Way to go sir.

After that there was a big work list to be done to prepare for the next trip but we got ur done and departed on Joe Gigliotti's 3rd annual Accurate sponsored 8 day trip this afternoon. We got a good load of bait and we're currently in route to the bluefin grounds. There was a couple of lucky boats today and many wiffs but we're going to try and get lucky tomorrow. It sure would be nice to get the sweat off on some 40-60 pound b.f.'s tomorrow let me tell you. So that's it. Good weather, good food and good company. Mostly regulars on this trip. There's only a couple of new faces. We'll keep you posted.
