kenai peninsula Fishing Report 2024

This past week has been all about chasing yellowtail. The amount of yellowtail we have been seeing at the Coronado Islands has been very impressive. The fish counts have not been a representation of how much fish is in the water. Stopping on a school of 300 yellowtail and only hooking 1 has become very common. On Friday we managed to catch 30 yellowtail and Saturday produced 20. These fish are still running in the 20-30 pound range with multiple fish over 30 in the past week. Fly lined sardines on 30 lb. yo-yo lures on 40 or 50 lb. as well as surface iron on 40 lb. have all been producing fish. These yellowtail have been a challenge to hook mainly because of all the bait in the water. When some of the bait goes away and these fish settle in. 50 to 100 fish days will become common. Captain Mike Pritchard called in this morning at 9:27 AM with the update from the Tribute out of Seaforth Sportfishing in Mission Bay, CA. We are off to a great start. Very good Bluefin Tuna fishing. We have 15 Bluefin Tuna and 1 Yellowfin Tuna (about 40 pounds). We have a very light load of only 9 anglers. We need 3 more Bluefin for out limit. We have a few first timers who got there first Bluefin Tuna We have a trip departing tonight. Call Seaforth at (619) 224-3383 to book a spot on the Tribute.

As the temps drop, we are finding the bottom biters are biting at our local spots. Lingcod and Reds with a mix of other great tasting fish. We have been seeing Yellowtail on a daily basis as well. 

We had a very very good afternoon of yellowtail fishing today. The grade was 16-22 pounds with some going larger. We took off at dark and will be looking offshore tomorrow for wahoo and dorado.

 Strictly a couple of travel days for us on these dates.  That's three in a row now.  1 1/2 days of that in good weather and the other 1 1/2 days in choppy weather.  The boats cleaned inside and out now.  The rails have been oiled.  Now we wait and do things like we do on these days.  You should know the travel day drill by now. 

 So anyway, we're fat, happy and lazy but we need to snap out of it now because tomorrow we're going to do some fishing.  We'll be looking for a dorado kelp tomorrow.  We should only need one dorado kelp to get what we need so hopefully we can get it done.  We'll find out shortly.  the weather should be nice tomorrow which will make the kelp easier to find.
       

Captain Mike Pritchard called in with an update from the Tribute. We are on a 2.5 day trip and we are having fantastic Yellowfin Tuna fishing conditions. We have just over 200 on board so far. It is greasy calm and HOT! We are hunting for Bluefin Tuna now ...

61 yellowfin tuna out of four stops.

Found what we were looking for, away from any other boats. Ended up with 4 Bluefin, #135 and the others all at #70 or so. Heck of a day!
