Hi friends. Well, our ride was just OK last night but we made it to the rockcod area safely and right on schedule. They weren't hittin' too hot right off the bat, but a wise black man once told Tommy Rothery, "rockfish don't bite until after 08:00 hours, yo." Gunny, you're so wise, with your little red hat. Gunny was right on. After 08:00 hours this morning, we started picking away at some really nice reds and Lingcods. After a couple of hours, we had to point the bow for San Diego and begin our end of the trip chores. It was a fun way to end the trip and the guys who stood at the rail, in the cold weather were rewarded with some of the tastiest fish that we catch out here. Good job.

Anyhow, not too much to report as we make our way up the line. Our weather currently (11:10 hours) is beautiful and we were just treated to a great showing of feeding Blue Whales. I'm guessing about 50 whales were in sight at one time, fluking and spouting their way about the ocean. Even better, I successfully managed not to hit a single one. You're welcome, Whale Wars, and sorry to the Nishin Maru.

With that, the gang is downstairs kickin' it, Chappy is making a movie and photo show of all the footage that him and I took this trip so that'll be cool to see tonight at dinner. Fish tacos for lunch, "Work Now" list getting the pen treatment, boys are scrubbing, paperwork time. We're out. Our ETA tomorrow morning is looking like 06:30 hours and we'll be turning around with Captain Drew taking us to the promised land. We'll chat with you manana. Time for sandals and Sirius 60's on 6.

P.S. Hi Drew! We didn't lose our prime on the W.M.! I just talked to her and said to suck it up, we're all under a lot of pressure too and she listened. We miss you, Drew. See you tomorrow, big guy! You too, Shabba! Shabba?? SHABBA!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I gotta go.

What's good, people. There are two kinds of Sinclairs in this world, Upton and Matthew. We had both today. Our fishing was Upton Sinclair-style, real good, and we have Matthew Sinclair and his mustache to help us on deck this trip. We caught all of the major species today and we even got our bronze on. First of the season! You farmers and your tans were no match for the Baja sun that we soaked up today. It was hot and flat out here, check the pictures if you don't believe me. Polaris Supreme. Come to think of it, ever since I took my shirt off, the fish wouldn't stop jumping into the boat until I buttoned her back up at days end. Ouch. Anyhow, awesome fishing at the Ridge today and just when we thought it was all said and done, Tommy "Black Eyes" Miles found a kelp at five miles that kicked out all the flatheads we could handle. Never underestimate the blackhawk and his powerful vision. Oh yeah baby, I done told y'all once to get on our level and I don't like to repeat myself. Ronny and the boys are so pumped right now. Big yellowfin, big bluefin, small yellowfin, small bluefin, big dorado, small dorado, big yellowtail, and small yellowtail. Oh yeah, we even hooked a really nice striped marlin today too. Abbey Wombat (the U.S. womens soccer star) couldn't be more proud of us right now. God Bless America.

So what's the plan for tomorrow? I don't know, I'm just a deckhand but I'll ask the skipper ... skipper says it's a secret. Intriguing. We'll report back tomorrow.

Weather report was a bit off for our first trip of 2021. Spent the day on the anchor in manageable depths. Plenty of fish fillet for all. No sign of yellowtail, yet !

Hello Everyone, Today we got an incredible head start to our Black Friday 7 day trip. We loaded a great load of bait and got on the road early. We are headed to the ridge or rocks with hopes of Wahoo, Tuna, Dorado, Grouper, and Yellowtail. Tomorrow will be a rigging day. We will decide whereto start fishing tomorrow. The Annual SFR charter aboard the Apollo with Captain J.J Gerritsen and crew was a big success !! The Apollo is running out of Sea Landing on beautiful Santa Barbara Harbor, the closest harbor to the outer Channel Islands. Great weather meant an ideal cruise over to San Miguel Island for some of the finest shallow water rockfishing you'll find anywhere. 300 feet down you say, maybe 200, how about 100 feet ? No way. The offshore terrain around San Miguel is so rugged and marked with underwater pinnacles, we spent most of the day fishing in 25 to 90 feet of water. Lighter rigs, jigs, leadheads and swimbaits were the order of the day, and the San Miguel rockfish were in a hungry mood. We started catching fish before daybreak and spent the rest on the trip hauling up huge reds, chuckles and lings, all sporting some of the most vibrant colors I've seen on any fish in a long time. Awesome day!! We limited out on huge rockfish, slammed about 50-60 grumpy whitefish, 5-6 huge goats and 16 or so pre-historic looking lings before calling it a trip. Epic day !!!! The jackpot was a nail biter as Shawn Suhr's huge lingcod and Art Moralez's giant goat battled to a near dead heat. Captain J.J needed to come down and settle the score, with the final vote went going to Shawn's 12-13 pound ling. Great job Shawn. Captain J.J and his crew did an awesome job as always and the Apollo is looking as spotless as ever. The Apollo will be in Santa Barbara till around mid May before moving down to Fisherman's Landing in San Diego. The San Diego out of Seaforth Landing in San Diego,CA checked in with us today:

Very good sign of yellowtail today. Unfortunately they were extremely difficult to hook. 21 yellowtail, 45 rockfish, 1 halibut. Fish were hooked on all the popular techniques.

Nov. 13

                We were back on The Ridge today.  We got to the spot a little after daylight and we found some action after a little bit of looking.  We were making drifts catching wahoo and tuna.  No great numbers on the wahoo.  We caught one per rod.  That's an average though.  Not everyone caught one.  For example, I believe team Oberg caught 3 or 4, and team Grella caught 5.  So it wasn't a great spread but everyone had there chances.  For example, team Holeman went 1 for 7 nd team Henry lost a bunch too.  But when they weren't losing wahoo they were pulling on tuna.  A bit on the smaller side but not too small.  We were tagging the bigger ones.  It was a fun and productive day I thought.  But we always want more.

 

                We left a little while after lunch toward Alijos Rocks and we'll be there all day tomorrow.  We'll most likely have to leave tomorrow night though because the wind, she's acoming.
