Skipper JJ Gerritsen returned with his Apollo to Fisherman's Landing November 21, after an eight-day, ultra-limited trip. The boat's ten passengers fished Guadalupe Island before taking off for Magdalena Bay to fish big tuna on their final day. "All of our long range trips are ultra-limited," said JJ. "It takes away competition factors, we won't do more than ten passengers. We got limits of yellowfin, Guadalupe's been great our last six trips, but we did something different this time; we headed out for a shot at these big ones. All of our fish are kept in refrigerated saltwater, so they still look great." Matt Bowland of Encinitas took home the best tuna; a 224-pound yellowfin that fought "long and hard." Matt used a 6/0 Owner ringed Super Mutu hook, on an 80-pound P-Line topshot, 100-pound Spectra, a Tiagra 30 reel and a Calstar Grafighter 765 H rod. "I butt-hooked the sardine," said Matt. "The fight lasted two and a half hours." Drew Card of San Diego was second with a 196-pound tuna, and Craig Biddick of Rancho Santa Fe was third for a 164-pounder.

Covered a lot of water and chased small spots of bluefin almost all day long. At the end of the day we only managed to land 6 bluefin from 25-80lbs. Tomorrow’s a new day.

Good evening and happy July to everyone. After not capturing a seabass last night, we shot offshore to try our hand at the tuna game. Nothing to write home about other than a beautiful 20 lb. Yellowtail that we pulled off a kelp. All we can do is remain confident that in time, things will take shape and we'll be ready for those tunas' when they quit being pansies and show themselves. After more driving around we made a move to the inside to do some bonding at the Banda Bank and we managed to entice some tasty critters to latch on to our hooks. It wasn't too great of a bite but we tagged some excellent table fare for the gang to take home.

As the sun began to set, we gave the seabass game another try, this time more southerly than last nights spot and just like last night, we were unsuccessful in the game. We had plenty of squid and had enough around us that we thought we could hook a couple croakers, but it never happened. All in all, it was a slow trip at times but we made the best out of the situation and put our passengers on some action. The group Garth brought out from Optima Networks and other various outlets were a pleasure to have on-board and we look forward to seeing them back in the future.

On a side note, we here at the Polaris Supreme would like to welcome back Chef Barry Benson to the team. Barry was diagnosed with throat cancer last year and with many treatments during the winter, Barry is back with us and better than ever. I've personally known Barry since 2000, when I was a chubby little 14 year old working together on the Holiday. He's a good friend of mine and I along with the rest of the crew are all thrilled that he's back and even more thrilled that he's recovered from his battle with cancer. He's missed being on the water and he's looking forward to many more adventures on the Polaris Supreme with all the fine people that we've come to share the rail with over the years.

That is all. We'll arrive at Fisherman's Landing tomorrow morning at 0600 in the morning and we'll be back out on Thursday for back to back three day trips. We'll report to you then, enjoy your weekends.

Hi friends. We departed Fisherman's Landing Thursday evening on our inaugural Optima 1 1/2 charter. We topped off on sardines and made a hard right turn coming out of the bay to go try our hand at some local White Seabass action. We gave it a shot and even with some live squid we were unsuccessful in hooking one. Since the distance to the local tuna grounds is close to home we decided to play around in the evening hours do some seabass fishing before we left for the tuna grounds.

That's what's going on. No seabass and we'll be trying our hand on the local grounds for some Bluefin tuna. Our weather is fine and the boys are very excited to do some tuna fishing. Wish us luck.

Drew Henderson docked Polaris Supreme June 11 after a three-day trip. He fished offshore kelp paddies to find a good catch of small yellowtail, a bluefin tuna and an albacore. Dale Goss of Lakewood got the bluefin and first place, as his tuna weighed 31 pounds. He enticed it with a sardine on a 2/0 Hayabusa hook. He fished with 30-pound Big Game line, a Daiwa H 40 reel and a seven-foot Sabre rod. Manvel Miuasyan of Van Nuys was second, for a 21-pound yellowtail, and Scott Tucker of Riverside was third, for a 17-pound yellow. Josh Evans of San Francisco got the albie. He trolled a cedar plug in natural wood color to land his longfin.

Polaris Supreme Trip Report 08-27-2016 Thanks again for checking in. We arrived nice and early to the tuna grounds to get ourselves in the best position for the days work. Shortly after first light we decided where we wanted to get things going. It started off quite slow as the conditions weren't just right. We lacked current which is not favorable to catching fish so it became a little bit of a waiting game. That gave Chef Mike his time to get breakfast out of the way. Not too long after we got mobile and did some looking around and finally started checking out some different schools and began scratching away at a few bluefin. They were in the 18 lb class which is not bad at all. As the day progressed, we found the spot that looked the best and posted up, getting a solid chum line going, got the balloons out and settled in. The fish slowly started popping up with some bluefin in the 70 lb class hitting the deck as well as Marilyn landing her first ever balloon fish and first yellowfin at about 70 lbs. Congrats on that one!! The rest of the afternoon was a steady pick on that beautiful grade of tuna. You couldn't ask for a better way to end a 3 day trip. As soon as we landed our last 2 nice bluefin, one being Theresa's 75 lb "dream fish", it was time to pack it up and head home for San Diego. Hey guys.

The Coronado Islands and the baja coast are coming alive. Many options for us right now. Yellowtail, barracuda,sandbass and the occasional white sea bass. Today we went out with 40 beginner anglers. We are coming back to the dock with 14 yellowtail 49 barracuda 32 sandbass and 41 sculpin. Conditions look promising for us. Reservations can be made at 619-224-3383 if you would like to join us.

Had another great day of grinding away at Yellowtail and Wahoo. The Wahoo are still around, they are now on live bait better than the trolling jigs and casting lures.
