pine lake Fishing Report 2024

We departed today on the Davis Construction annual private charter. This year there are six lucky individuals who were invited to go, with Jim and Gunnar being the new guys. We loaded up at the bait receivers with some excellent bait, and headed down south in beautiful, flat calm weather. Everyone is excited at the prospects that lie ahead. We dined on a great barbecued pork tenderloin for lunch and just enjoyed the company and the smooth ride.

 Here we go again.  One last short trip of the year.  My last trip as the captain.  El Capitan, Master, number 1,el jefe, the chief...  After this one Tommy comes out for 15 days.  You'll still get my blogs though because I'll be here.  Right now though I'm thinking about this trip right here that we're on right now.  I'm feeling some dorado and tuna tomorrow.  I'm hoping we get it done early and I have the problem of figuring out, OK, what next?  That would be real nice.  We'll see.  I have her on course and I'm feeling prime rib tonight.  I don't think I've eaten it in 2 years out here but tonight might be the night.  I haven't been very healthy lately so what's one more drink on the Titanic right?

Happy July 4th everyone.
    We started our morning off doing some bluefin watching.  It's like whale watching but instead of whales you watch bluefin.  In other words they didn't bite.  We got on one spot and they were practically smacking the side of the boat they were so close but they wanted nothing to do with us.  After a little bit of that and a kelp for some yellows and our first dorado of the year we started getting strikes on yellowfin.  It was pretty steady for 1 1/2 hours then shut down for 1 1/2 hours then started up again for 1 hour then went completely dead.  We went west because west is best.  After lunch things got interesting.  We started to see big schools of yellowfin and it didn't stop until dark.  As my grandma would say, "holy Toledo!".  Unfortunately they were not biting fish.  We would get stops for 2,1,1,2,4,1,1,2,2,3,3,3,1,2, like that.  But we stayed busy and worked  hard at it and scratched out a nice catch.  We had 40 tuna stops and averaged 2 per stop.  Now thats scratching.

    The weather was incredible.  As my grandma would say, "holy Toledo!".  Variable winds all day.  That means there wasn't enough wind to measure.  I think that's what it means anyway.  We're headed back in and will be docking at 7:15 in the am and we will be turning around on a 6 day.  I'll be your captain.  See you then.
                                

 

The Apollo called in earlier. They have just started on their 5 day trip. They have 11 Albacore for their 9 guys. Nice Job, JJ!

24 anglers. 23 bluefin tuna from 40-80 lbs. They let their guard down a bit today and the guys took full advantage. Today’s best setup was a 160-200 gram flatfall or a sinker rig fished on 40-60lb.

Fishing yesterday was absolutely fantastic. The grade of albacore that we were catching was beautiful with half being 30-40 lbs. and the other half averaging 22 lbs. Weather yesterday and today is excellent. This morning we are already into albacore, blue fin and yellow fin. Looks like a another great day on the water. A good finish to a good trip today. It started off a slow morning like every morning of this trip started off. It being the last day we just traveled north all morning to increase our fishing time for the day. We bumped into a school of those 50-70 pound bft's mid to late morning and drifted till we were out of time. We landed almost 30 of those beauts before we had to call it and head for the barn. The weather today was great and the ride going up is ideal. The fillet and crab cakes were delish and everyone is tuckered out but me but only because I have to be up.
