copper river Fishing Report 2024

Tuesday, August 14th, 2012

Hi friends. A lack of bigger fish was the main culprit for our day. Hard to not be spoiled with the previous two days but our weather was very pleasant and that smaller fish (12-22 lbs.) got on us, so out Tuesday was not lost. We did manage a handful of those bigger YFT's and BFT's and we'll be on the final leg of our hunt tomorrow. Oh yeah, today was also just a fine day to eat food. Sushi Schooler and Sushi Shawn kicked out some sushi, beautifully seared bluefin, yellowfin poki, and all the goods to go along with it. Not bad for a couple of round-eyes. Anyhow, Polaris Supreme and like I said, our weather was awesome and it's looking to repeat itself tomorrow. Hopefully --fishing wise-- we can repeat Sunday and Monday. Check back tomorrow and we'll hopefully finish this trip off with bang. Peace be with you, and also with you.

Oh yeah. Before I go, we're going to be giving you a brand new segment to our daily reports. It might not happen everyday but chances are it's going to happen on the reg. The new segment is called "Reasons We Make Mark Clark Wear A Hard Hat". If you've been following our reports, you'll know that last trip, we caught a big yellow hard hat and without hesitation, promptly gave it to our beloved deckhand, Mark, to wear for the duration of his career on the boat. So, without further delay, here is how our new installation will go.

Reasons We Make Clark Mark Wear A Hard Hat.

Reason #1:
When fishing for squid, all one must do is drop the squid jig down, bounce it a little bit, raising the rod up and slowly dropping it back down while keeping the line tight. When you get a bite, the squid latches onto the jig with its tentacles and all you have to do is wind it up. That's all. But last night, history was made. While fishing side-by-each with Mark --Drew and I witnessed this with our bare eyes and still can't stop reliving this gem-- the jig was no more than five feet below the surface and as Mark was jigging, the strike came. A squid was just about to latch on to the end of the jig and all of a sudden, something we've never seen before happened. Mark set the hook. He set the hook! And I don't mean like, he gave it a little tug. He set this thing like he was Jimmy freaking Houston at the Bassmaster Classic. If we were kite fishing, we would've shown this hookset as a perfect example of how to set a hook once your kite baits have been eaten by a two hundred pound tuna. Thankfully, no one was hurt as the jig and sinker went flying into the side of the house at Mach 2, and we now have a brand new little blog baby to share with the world wide web. We hope you enjoy. Well we are back out on the water. We departed today on a 5-day with 24 anxious anglers. There are some new faces mixed in with some regulars. Our weather looks like it is going to be good. We will be heading for open water to look for tuna. Dinner tonight was a superb prime rib, with fresh vegetables and potato.

Fishing today was absolutely excellent! The albacore bit all day and the weather has laid down and is good. All the albies range in the 25 to 30 lb range. For lunch we had swordfish in a butter, lemon, caper cream sauce and for dinner we had a rack of lamb with a blue cheese port wine sauce. Yummy! A couple of boats headed to Guadalupe to no avail. We still have a spot here and there on some of our upcoming trips. Give Susan a call in the office if you can get away and come fish.

Plenty of bites and opportunity today as we landed 4 nice bluefin.

Tip from the crew: make sure your spectra is put on your reel properly with a line winding machine.

Very similar to last week with the exception of a big yellowtail day. The potential for a big yellowtail score is definitely out there but several things must come together. On Friday I thought we were going to get our shot. We stopped at a spot and instantly had 8 yellowtail hooked and we were seeing a big school around us. While we were fighting our first 8 fish the motherlode of big bull seal ions came in to ruin our fun. When the dust settled we had only landed 3 and the big school was scared away by the cute cuddly seal ions. Water conditions are about as nice as they could be with temperatures ranging from 67-70 degrees and very clean. The calico bass fishing has been good on the days we get anchovies and the barracuda continue to bite very well at times. All and all we had a very enjoyable week catching surface fish in very nice weather. Hot and sunny in flat calm seas catching gamefish describes our current conditions perfectly. Tackle to bring out remains the same. A 15 or 20 lb. rod to fish anchovies a 25 or 30 lb. rod to fish sardines a 40 lb. jig stick and an assortment of hooks (2's and 2/0's) and small egg or rubber core sinkers (1/8-1/2 oz.) will have you covered.

First of all I'd like to say that I'm aware I spelled whine wrong yesterday. As soon as I hit send I realised it so don't mention it. Secondly I'm going to let Mark write the report tonight so here we go. Enjoy.

Nevermind that. Mark refused. Anyways, we departed today on the old Bob Vance 5 day trip. PLenty of food, fuel, bait, passengers, crew, water, tackle and whatever else we use out here on board. We had a nice lunch, nap and seminar today and will be looking for tuna first light and before in the dark. Dinner was spectacular as always with the usual prime rib and sides. I also enjoyed a delicous mango sorbet with some kind of strawberry glaze sauce stuff on it also topped with fresh strawberries. Write to you tomorrow. See you later.

 Good evening everyone.  We wrapped up our trip today.  And it was an interesting day.  First off the weather continued to produce variable wind.  Flat calm and gorgeous.  Onto the fishing.  As you know we almost had no sardine today.  We used it well though for the time we had it.  The bluefin floated today.  Everywhere you looked there was a 30-50 pound bluefin gently rolling on the glassy surface.  Other times you would see the whole school swimming on the surface.  It definitely had that feel to it.  We caught 30 fish from 30-50 pounds this morning before we ran out of bait.  For the time being it was great but sad when we ran out.  We still had a couple tanks of big mackerel to use and Tommy had it figured out where we would use it.  So we made a few hour move and it didn't take long after we arrived to the honey hole before we were gettinum.  Big yellowfin.  45-65 pounders.  It felt like we were anchored up at Alijos Rocks when the tuna were around there.  Those fish liked our mackerel.  We caught a few over 20 of those bad boys before they quit biting.  I wish we could be in 2 spots at once.

 So we have a 1.5 day trip leaving tomorrow afternoon Aug. 27 and we want you to go.  Let me try and talk you into it.  Now this is me speaking truth.  Not blowing smoke at you.  The weather still is fore casted to be great great.  Variable wind.  Now I told you we had great fishing this morning while we had bait.  A lot of the boats that had just left on there trips that had bait all day drifted all day.  Not all but a lot. They drifted and they caught. It's a good time to go fishing I'd say.  Good grade, good fishing. Let us take you fishing, feed you great, show you a good time and hopefully the bonus, catch lots of fish.
