newport Fishing Report 2024

Passing up the small numbers of big Bluefin, targeting big variety! We departed today on our annual Hess 7 day charter. We are pointed south targeting Wahoo, Yellowtail, and Yellowfin tuna! The weather is great and the prime rib is Delicious. Will report tomorrow, Team Supreme

POLARIS SUPREME TRIP UPDATE 09-26-2020 We spent the day looking for Tuna and Wahoo without much luck. We did however get some great wide open Dorado fishing. As usual we only kept a small portion of them. The weather is a little bumpy but OK. Going to try a little nite fishing. The Polaris Supreme Crew!

Fishing is very technical now. Lots of Tuna but mainly being hooked with a well placed cast in a Tuna foamer. 

They are mainly biting surface lures.

Including:

Colt sniper stick baits 

Poppers 

Colt sniper jigs 

Tady 45 or Salas 7x surface irons 

Be ready to cast and be ready for action.

Hello Everyone, Today we had a great day chasing the bigger Bluefin Tuna. We were able to land some great quality fish. Most came on the kite, but the one we landed on a fly line outfit bit 80lb with a great designer hook. Our landing ratio is great, we only need a few more of these quality Bluefin Tuna to make it so everyone has landed a fish over 120lbs. Hopefully we can get it done tomorrow.  We missed again this morning folks.  I'm not very happy about it, but I've excepted it.  We've definitely put in our work this trip.  Not necessarily physically these last couple days but mentally for sure.  I am drained.  We didn't want to spend another afternoon like we spent yesterday so we left the grounds and fished the Coronado Islands this afternoon.  We didn't see much yellowtail.  Myself or the other long range boat here.  I heard some good analogies this trip by other captains on the radio that I'd like to share.  Looking at the fish reports is like watching sports center.  They keep showing you all the top tens, but they almost never show the other Joe's, and sometimes you're the bug, and sometimes you're the windshield.  Most guys the last couple days have been the bugs.

 There have been quite a few firsts for me lately.  First of all I've never spent this much time fishing this close to home other than my 3/4 day days..  I have never been anchored up right outside the harbor on the second night of the trip.  We were there catching bait.  I've never captained the boat to San Clemente or the Coronado Islands.  There's probably more.  Oh yeah, I've never seen the 5 freeway from the boat.  Mark thought it was a bird school.  In his defense, I had to give it a double take too.

 So that's it.  We're going home and we'll be leaving for 5 tomorrow.  Tommy is coming back out so he'll be deciding where to go.  I'll tell you though, it's tough to pass on this fish.  Unfortunately for us, it's the best grade of tuna around.  It's great for the 1/2 day boats though.
       

Out with a light load last night so, Captain Shane decided to go fish for Big Bluefin. As of 5 pm, they had 12 Bluefin on board, most 80-140 pounds, 2 at 180 and a 315! Pictured below is regular Shane wrightson with a limit of Bluefin, one at 180 pounds and one at 315. Captain Shane can catch fish, but may need to work on his picture taking

Hi Anglers

Well I tried to get a hold of Drew since four this afternoon to no avail. And that's usually a good thing...and indeed it was. Finally at seven he picked up and said he was getting them good. He had 117 bluefin, and it was all that nicer 25-35 lb. grade. It's amazing this fishing has been going on since June. I hope I don't jinx myself here, but it looks like we're heading for a record year here on bluefin.

July 25          
  We had a very busy turn around today.  It was time to change oil and fuel filters and make a repair.  But all is good and we're under way.  Our new computers are getting more and more dialed in.  I now have spell check.  I love sitting back in the chair now and typing these reports.  Not now though because the letters shrunk on me again.  I'm going to have to figure that out.  So here we go again on another 5 day.  Our baits good we think.  Time will always tell.  It's looking like things might get a bit breezy the next few days so we have Cedros in mind.  We're going to fish tuna tomorrow first and then most likely fish the Island the day after for a couple days and let the weather come down before finishing up in tuna land for our last day.  That's the game plan at the moment anyway.  Things change out here all the time though.  In the end we just take it one day at a time.

  The official weigh in is in.  We have Mark weighing in at 231.4 pounds.  And in the left corner we have Justin weighing in at 228.2 pounds.  If your just tuning in, he who loses the most weight by October 1 wins the bet.  I'll keep you posted after each progress report hopefully at the end of each trip.  This excites me.  Competition.  I love it.
