melton reservoir Fishing Report 2025

As the sun was setting on our final “offshore” trip of 2020. The moon was rising over the Coronado islands. Today we scratched 60 small yellowtail off of various kelps. Tomorrow’s trip has been cancelled due to lack of reservations. All of our trips in December will be fishing the islands and will require a passport. Reservations are very important this time of year.

Andrew Viola called in with an update from the Pacifica out of Seaforth Landing in San Diego, CA.

We have Yellowtail limits on the boat, most of them around the 10 pound range and a fair amount in the 15 pound range. We also have 3 Yellowfin Tuna and 1 Dorado.

We have an Overnight trip leaving tonight at 10pm and a 1.5 day trip leaving on Tuesday at 9pm with open spots.

 "Fixed up" is a good expression to describe our day today.  We had very good yellowfin tuna fishing.  We arrived to our destination shortly after breakfast and after about 1/2 an hour of searching we found what we were looking for.  A school of 25-30 pound yellowfin.  It bit for a little while before we had to relocate the school, which we did a few times.  After that we found a different school of a more mixed grade of 10-30 pounders that we hit a couple times.  Then we found a school of mostly 16-22 pounders that we did well off of.  I think you get the point.  We had a good day.  Along with all the tuna we caught, we also managed 7 wahoo and 4 dorado.  I'll say it again, we had a good day.  We're feeling satisfied.  Worth the days travel to get where we've been the last couple days, that's for sure.

 The weather today was fantastic.  Fan tastic.  We'll be traveling tonight and sleeping in tomorrow.  We're shooting to be fishing tomorrow afternoon.  We'd like to top off on some yellers.

Hi friends. Yesterday, it was a sad day for Raider nation and eleven years ago today, it was a sad day for our nation. A day that we will never forget and with the sadness and pain came unity and strength. We pay or respects to those lost on September 11th of 2001 and we pay respects to the military --past and present-- that fought for our freedom and still continue to fight today. Thank you, from the Polaris Supreme.

Anyhow, the weather was fantastic. We caught good yellowtail this morning and we had jigs behind the boat for most of the day while we made our way up the line to get setup for tomorrow. We actually had to pull in the jigs on numerous occasions because the football yellowfin were so relentless. We're after trophies now and it sounds like there are some schools of big yellowfin running around. We'll see if we can't get on a school to end our trip on a grand note. Today we started our Thorne family four day trip. Most of the fishing seems to be slightly out of our reach today. However we were able to pull on some fish. Mostly Skip Jack and small Yellowtail. Not necessarily the targeted species but great fun for the kids as well as a good starter for the adults.Nothing is better practice for following your lines than a school of wild Skipjack! Here we have Kingston and Justine with the perfect starter fish to get the skunk off and release back into the ocean. Now we are ready for tomorrow. Targeting Yellowfin Tuna and Dorado .

Captain Ryan Bostian called in with an update from The San Diego. We had 144 Yellowfin Tuna and 70 Dorado! The fish were not full speed. It was a pick all day.  Today didn't go as well as we were hoping. The plan sounded so good in my head too. You don't believe me? Come inside my mind and tell me it didn't sound like a good plan, you'll be a liar. The plan was to start here and work there. We were supposed to catch a bunch of yellowtail, then catch a wahoo or two, then scratch at some dorado here and there along with another wahoo or two, then we were supposed to get a small hit on wahoo in the end before finding the motherload of dorado.

 Well, there wasn't much yellowtail. The little bit of dorado we saw either didn't bite or was small. And we didn't see a wahoo until the end. We did see a school of good grade yellowfin that wasn't in our plan. It didn't bite for long though. It was on the corner biting every bait for about three minutes. Just long enough for everyone to get one and then they vanished. I drove around thinking I would easily find the school again but we never did. We lost at least 6 wahoo on the last spot we checked and landed none. The wahoo won today.

 Cool things of note today- the sailfish we caught, a couple marlin hooked and the orcas we saw. In the 14 seasons I've been out here I can only remember a handfull of times seeing killer whales so it's not too often we see them. We also don't catch sailfish too often.
