westport salmon Fishing Report 2025

Hi friends. It seems like things just haven't quite lined up this trip for us. Our first day offshore had plenty of small tuna and beautiful weather but a lack of biting bigger fish. Our second day gave us no squid but excellent fin-bait fishing and a really good morning whack on 18-25 lb. yellowtail. Yesterday, we had great weather, a furious morning on wahoo but only a small showing of tuna. Although we did capture a few of those 75-90 pounders, the signal only lasted a couple of hours late in the day.

Looking at our day today, we didn't connect on any 'hoos but after a reposition on the anchor, we started to see very good sign of that nice tuna around. Our problem today was our lack of a fish count. We didn't really have a problem hooking fish this morning, our problem was getting these fish past the ravenous sharks down here. We had steady action on the fly-lined baits and we had a really good kite rotation going but even with 100 lb. test on Tiagra 50's, we were unable to properly horse most of the tuna to the boat before ultimately losing the battle to the sharks. Ugh, very frustrating. Things look really good here on that big tuna and if we didn't have a shark issue, we would've had ourselves a really great day.

Oh well, we had our shots and to rub a little more salt in the wound, the wind is projected to really stir things up out here so we had to make a move a little more inshore to set ourselves up for not only yellowfin tuna, wahoo, dorado, and yellowtail, but to also keep one step ahead of the weather. We've made all the right moves so far, it's just a matter of us having all the stars align just right and when/if that does happen...Sonny Jim, baby.

So that is all. Aside from a little rain, wind, and fish-less kelps this afternoon, our weather was absolutely gorgeous and we took the day to relax and enjoy some delicious food. Chef Schooler served up one of the best fish dishes I've ever had in my life for dinner. Fresh wahoo -- donated by Polaris Supreme regular Dennis McNeely -- was placed under a pool of lemon beurre-rouge sauce with a vegetable stir-fry, and rice. Round of applause for Schooler on that one, I couldn't have been more impressed by that meal and I speak for the entire group. With that, we'll be back at it again first thing tomorrow. Before I go, I just want to mention how fantastic our bait is this trip. We really lucked out as the entire long range fleet is code red mere hours into their trips and we have been blessed with the best load of bait we've had all year. We're grateful, we're pumped, we're out.

P.S. I don't know what's going on, but Mark hasn't had any hardhat infractions in days. I know that everyone following our reports are really confused by a lack of hardhat updates but Mark hasn't received any penalties. Don't worry though, friends, a big one is coming. I'm talking an all-day hardhat donning. It'll happen, be patient everybody, it'll happen and it will be glorious.

P.S.S. Andrea - Jed says that although Ron might have the keys to his room but only you have the keys to his heart. That's very deep.

Good afternon faithful Supreme followers. Checking in from the bridge as we head south to the tuna grounds on this 2 day adventure. Tommy, Susan and the crew would like to start by thanking Mr. Robin Gledhill for putting together yet another great group for his annual Blue-White 5 day charter. He never ceases to make it a pleasurable vacation for both his anglers as well as the crew. From 0 dark thirty to night fall with bent rods and the variety of fish coming over the rail to the evenings hosted by Chef Shawn with his A+ meals and Mr. Gladhill serving up the numerous different wines that are brought along to wet the lips after a busy day of fishing. We always enjoy watching our buddy Kenny "Hammertime" Holland engage in battle with any fish he swings on because let me tell you, that's a show folks, that one intense fella! Our own Capt. Tommie "Gunny" Miles found out that himself and Kenny spent time on the same ship at the same back in the 1980's when Gunny was in the Marine Corps and Kenny was in the Navy!!! Small world!! Thanks once again Robin for a great trip and and we look forward to seeing you and the gang next year.

So as I check in here, we have her pointed south toward a nice looking pocket of water that we are hoping will be holding a nice kelp or maybe a lucky school of tuna to get the trip started. We shall find out just before dinner tonight. The weather isn't too bad at the moment, a little wind and a hint of a roll when the boat stops, but shouldn't be to bad for us though. Let's hope everything weatherwise prevails so we can have a productive day tomorrow. We wanna welcome Chef David "Shabba" Schooler back into the galley for the next couple trips after a little bit of time off. Always fun having that guy around the boat. He started things off with a real tasty lunch this afternon by serving up a cheese ravioli topped with marinated chicken and peso sauce sided with a chicken ceaser salad. And of course tonight we'll have a prime rib dinner for the guys which is always a crowd favorite.

That's it for now folks, wish us calm seas and bent rods tomrrow as well as Captain Drew to enjoy his couple days off with his wife and Domino the dog after over a month out here on the boat. I know right now as I type this up, he's glued to his TV catching up on the final season of Breaking Bad (him and I are addicted to that show!) We'll give you another check tomorrow evening after fishing and let you know how the day went.

One sweep of the sonar may change your life just like it did for our group today. 85 yellowfin tuna, 15 bluefin tuna, 30 skipjack tuna, 65 yellowtail (not tuna).

A four hour drift, followed by 2 quick stops resulted in 39 bluefin from 30-60 lbs and 28 yellowfin from 20-50 lbs. staying at the rail and fishing either a flyline sardine on 30 or 40 lb. A 60-100 gram colt sniper or flatfall or a 2-4 oz torpedo sinker with a 1/0 or 2/0 circle hooks is the name of the game. Keep em wet !

July 23 Friday After spending all day yesterday searching and not catching our 35 albacore we caught this morning seamed like a bonanza. They shut off at 11:00 and that was that. With the Albacore hit we got on the way down and one of those days fishing Yellowtail one can only dream of, our over all fishing was great. many thanks to our charter head Paul and his great crew of anglers. But he also dose a better job scrubbing and Drew wasn't letting him get out of it. Tommy. July 22nd, 2010 Hello to all. Today we decided to look around at some new territory for the elusive albacore. I'm going to cut right to the chase, fishing was great and catching was terrible. We did see an area of birds/whales that looked promising but we never saw a tuna and that was the highlight of our day. Maybe in time this area will be productive but for now, we know where not to go. The weather is still picture-perfect and our anglers are all in good spirits. We are currently moving up the line to put ourselves in position for a full day of albacore/bluefin fishing for our final day. We'll check back in tomorrow and keep you posted on our day. Richie and Crew. July 21st, 2010 Wow, what a day we had aboard the Polaris Supreme. We arrived at our destination first thing in the morning to find calm seas and a slight overcast. After some scanning around, we located a nice school and within a few minutes we were bent over with yellowtail. It wasn't wide open by any means but it was a very enjoyable pace for our fine group of folks. Around lunch time, we went through a little lull and took full advantage of a chance to rest sore arms, enjoy a glass of water, and get out of the sun for a bit. Oh yeah, the weather was gorgeous. Flat calm with sunshine. The SPF 50 was flowing for sure. Anyhow, after a little break, it was time to go to work again. This go-around, the yellows gave off a much more ferocious vibe and we enjoyed excellent fishing to round out our day. The show of yellowtail was very impressive to say the least. Not many times when we would look into the water and not see free swimming yellowtail everywhere. In closing, we had a very fun day of fishing and we will be sleeping easy tonight. Our plan is to take a look in some different areas for tomorrow and to hopefully round out our beautiful catch of yellowtail with some tuna fish. Thanks for checking in and wish us luck. Richie and crew. July 20th, Good evening everyone, We finally wet our lines first thing this morning and it didn't take us long to get the blood flowing with some Albacore jig strikes. After some short stops for a handful of fish, we found what we we're looking for. We enjoyed a couple of very good stops that kept us busy for the morning. We also threw on a few Bluefin tuna to round out our morning. After lunch, things kind of died down and we decided to head on a southerly course to do some Yellowtail fishing. The cherry on today's sundae was the absolutely beautiful weather. Flat calm, a light breeze, and a nice cloud cover to keep us from getting too toasty. Well thanks for checking up on us. We'll be at the Yellowtail grounds first thing in the morning. Take care. Richie and crew. July 19th, Hi friends, Today we departed on our annual Paul Hess 5 day with 23 of his closest friends. After clearing Point Loma with a beautiful load of bait and an eager group of anglers, we enjoyed a wonderful lunch and rigged up tackle. After our tackle seminar, Sandra and Dave Lafferty went to work in the galley preparing a meal fit for kings and queens. Appetizers, clam chowder and Caesar salad. Main course, Fresh salmon and crab cakes with a hollandaise sauce with gourmet macaroni and cheese, asparagus and corn. To top off the meal, we enjoyed homemade cherry cobbler with vanilla ice cream. To sum it up, it was excellent. The service was top notch as well. Paul and Kyle served it up and Matt kept those dishes sparkling clean. The whole dinner was a thank you from Paul and friends for 10 years of the fine service he's been treated to onboard the Polaris Supreme. From all of us, thank you to Paul and the gang. Anyhow, reports from the tuna grounds sound encouraging so we will find ourselves in the zone tomorrow morning. Thanks for checking in and we'll keep you updated on what we do. Wish us luck. Mike Pritchard called in with this report for the Tribute. "We're just rollin' out of our 2nd stop. We picked up 25 Bluefin & we still have a couple of fish hang'n. We also caught a half dozen Skipjack, 6 or 7 Dorado here for the morning. We are seeing a very, very good sign of tuna. I know there are a couple guys here who have done very well. We're talking over 100 fish for the morning, with some Yellowfin tuna as well. We'll keep you posted."

The Costello Gang returned with a great catch this morning and we provisioned and departed with out a hitch with Tom chaparro's annual 6 day limited trip. Our bait was excellent and we put it right to use on a fantastic afternoon of tuna fishing.It was Realy Good! We are now idling up swell for dinner in good weather and plan on doing more of the same tomorrow.The Polaris Supreme Crew.

 

Come fishing on November 30ths 7 day. We are all locked and loaded. Wahoo leaders are crimped, tied, and twisted. The tuna gear is on and ready to grab. Even the people who have giant Grouper on the mind have their heavy gear and big hooks tied on ready to flyline a Skipjack. We feel very ready and anxious to start fishing. Hopefully they cooperate .
