slapton sands Fishing Report 2025

After an excruciating day looking for tuna and not finding any we decide to bail out and we were rewarded late in the day with some really large dorado. Had a lot of fun pulling them in. The weather started out crappy this morning but turned nice later in the day.

Captain Mike Pritchard called in last night from the Tribute. We wrapped up our 1.5 day trip. We fished out West. We had 56 Bluefin Tuna (38 pounds), 52 Yellowfin Tuna, 38 Yellowtail, and other assorted fish. We have another 1.5 day trip that departs on Monday night. Captain Ryan Bostian checked in tonight with an update from the San Diego out of Seaforth Sportfishing in San Diego, CA. Today we had limits of Yellowtail and Bonito. The fishing was fantastic. We also caught and released even more fish. The loads are light and the fishing is excellent. Come join us on The San Diego!

 Good evening to everyone at home or wherever you may read this.  After one night dockside we were back to the boat this afternoon.  We headed to the fuel dock and changed oil and fuel filters, filled her all the way up on fuel, grabbed some brine making salt and loaded 2 weeks worth of food.  Shortly after getting back to Fishermans Landing, all our dogs got here.  I'm talking about George, Craig, Charlie, the Jer-bear, the Bry man, Bernie, Scott and the infamous J.C.  Infamous.  That's like really famous. 

 We took our time at the bait receivers to ensure we had the best that bait could offer us.  We're pretty happy with it at the moment.  For the next 4 days we'll be traveling to our destination of the Shamada seamount.  AKA Hurricane Bank.  And speaking of hurricanes, there isn't one at the moment.  Lately they've just been rolling in one after another but for now, none.  It's our destiny to get down below and catch very large yellowfin and wahoo.  Tommy spent a bunch of money and rented a system that allows us to get on the web where ever we are which allows us too look at all our weather web sites to keep track of storms that may be an issue to us.  So worry not.  We won't be anywhere near a low pressure system this trip.  Safe and sound out here as always.

 Anyways, it sure looked to me like everyone had a good afternoon hanging out, getting there cigar on and doing what they do.  We didn't even make it through dinner before the Bry-man and the Jer-bear got on what they call Team Bernard.  It's there thing to talk some smack and make fun of Scott and Bernie and it's hilarious on all sides.  Here we go.

 So for the next few days we'll be getting ready for a week of some hardcore fishing.  Rigging tackle, tuna and wahoo seminars, naps, movies, food, cocktails...  I think the next few reports will read like this paragraph we're on now.

Hi friends and happy Columbus Day. For the morning time up until around 1300 hours this afternoon, we sure felt like Columbus. The on-going search for a kelp paddy was getting to the point where I felt that we were going to sail right off the map and into oblivion. Between myself and our mast-men, we searched high and low with the one other boat in the upper area until our eyes were beginning to bleed and our faces burnt by the wind. By morning's end, our tally was a Bluefin tuna and four Yellowtail, ouch. I wish that I could type that we made some crazy move to left field and got on something spectacular to end our day but that just wouldn't be truthful. Well, half of that sentence is true.

We owe our day to our long-range brother, code group affiliate, and good friend, Roy Rose on the Royal Polaris. The "RP" was coming up the line from Cedros Island and really wasn't looking to do any type of fishing as they were just wrapping up an 11-day trip. But Roy is a very cool cat and when Roy's not fishing, he's fishing. Bottom-line, he was more than willing to help us out, drag some jigs, and scan the horizon for signs of life for a few hours as a lower area check. At around 1300 hours, Roy called us up and informed us that he had a couple blind jig strikes on Yellowfin, a couple bait-fish, and he also saw a very nice kelp paddy that he stopped on and --as he put it-- was"corroded" with Yellowtail. Being only a couple hours from his position, we kicked the tires and lit the fires down to his position where he graciously marked this beauty of a kelp for us and he was one-hundred percent correct; this kelp was LOADED with Yellowtail. We made three drifts on the kelp, got all we needed and began the search for tuna, which was unsuccessful, but our day was salvaged thanks to our good friends on the RP. My point is, that it's good to know good people, and Roy is one of the best and we owe him greatly. Although Roy is one of the nicest guys around, any one of our long-range brethren would've done the same for us as we would for them. Helping out each other is what makes the long-range fleet one of the finest teams you'll find and today was a perfect example of teamwork and sacrifice. Thanks Roy.

With that, we're making our way up the line in a little bit of weather. Fifteen knots of wind (weatherman was bad. Bad weatherman!) and a mild sea is bumping us up and down a little bit, but it could be a lot worse. We'll take this weather we have now as long as it doesn't build. We'll be back to the docks sometime tomorrow in the mid-morning time and we'll be returning on Saturday afternoon for Joe Giglioti's 8-day trip. If you can swing it, there are still a couple of spots available and Joe will be bringing some goodies from Accurate Reels to give away to our ultra limited-load of anglers. Hi friends. I've changed my name and occupation. I am now a 007 agent and my name is Pierce Bronzin'. The bronzing was just dandy today. Justin Thompson, get you're tanning oil ready. It was sick hot today and sunny like Cher liked it. Anyhow, the fishing was sporadic. We had a few stops in the morning on those twenty-five to forty pound yellowfin, went through a long lull, and then a little after lunch we got on a kelp that was once again, aquarium-style fishing. All you wanted on football yellowfin with a couple of standouts and some really nice flatheads too. On yesterday's aquarium-style stop, we opened up our siphon valves to the deck tanks and looked over the side of the hull to see a foamer of yellowfin, yellowtail, and dorado on our dead sardines that accumulate in the bottom of our deck wells. Awesome. Today, we did some lift-polin' which was fun too. Just letting you know that when I say aquarium-style, I mean aquarium-style. Hundreds of fish swimming in front of your eyes at any time is a sight to see and we're thankful that we've seen it twice in as many days. Sweet.

With that, we took only a few boxes full of tuna and dorado, released all the three pound yellowtail, and then we kept on with our search for trophies. From this point until trips end, will be hunting strictly trophies as far as our tuna agenda goes. Let's hope that they show up and we can get them located and do some damage. We'll get the camera out for those, for sure.

For tomorrow, we'll be doing some yellowtail fishing and we'll take it from there. Wish us luck and we'll chat with you tomorrow.
