sardis Fishing Report 2025

Our first day of Larry Brown's fathers day 5 day trip was spent offshore hunting the elusive albacore and blue fin tuna. We came up short. Although we were in good water most of the day, we did not find any tuna at all. Much travel needed to be done today to put us in position for our day tomorrow. Weather is good.

We had a good day on the wahoo and excellent fishing on the 20lb. yellowtail. Weather is still good and the excitement is high as we are going to look for some of those big tuna tomorrow.  I think I'm going to start naming my reports.  This one is called "We should have stuck with the game plan".  The plan was to start where we did, and if it didn't look good run up 40 miles to the next spot arriving just after lunch when it's bite time there.  Well we started off slow.  Conditions were a little funky.  We saw some fish, but they didn't really bite.  We caught a few yellows and the biggest ling cod I've ever seen brought up on this boat, but it wasn't good enough to stick around.  So we started off sticking with the plan when we left and went north but then we decided to do some radio fishing.  I heard 4th hand and then 3rd hand that a boat had a couple really good dorado kelps the day prior almost in striking distance and then really good yellowtail in the afternoon definitely in striking distance.  Then I saw on my water temp chart that same water just a few hours below us so we made the move.  Obviously by my whining you can tell it didn't work out.  We didn't find much kelp in the good water.  We found one OK kelp but we only caught a handful of flats.  There was a few wahoo swimming around it but we didn't catch any.

 So that's OK.  We're not worried.  We still have yesterdays afternoon yellowtail hot spot to fish.  Not today.  Should have been here yesterday. Maybe that should be the name of the report. We saw some and caught a few but it was nothing good.  So here we sit.  I'm not sure if we stuck with the game plan that it would have worked out.  There already was a boat on the spot we were headed to and it's kind of a one boat spot so maybe we didn't miss anything.

 It's funny.  I haven't written this long of a report in a long time.  If fishing was good today I probably would have written one paragraph.  I needed to rant.  Anyways we're going to stick it out here and regroup and try it again in the morning.  Hopefully we find some yellows to work with but either way we plan on looking for a dorado kelp in the afternoon.  Hopefully I only write one paragraph tomorrow.

 Remember yesterday I was talking about plans? Well if you read my first report of the trip I talked about dragging our feet a day and waiting for the weather to get pristine out at the Rocks. That was the master plan and well, it worked out. Today we had great weather to go along with our great wahoo fishing. We arrived to the grounds at 7:30 and we were getting steady jig strikes on wahoo to go along with jigging and baiting until about 5:30 when things around here went to bed. I really wanted 4 more wahoo for the magic number but we tried and tried and we gave up. The fish went to bed so we will too. We're now sitting on anchor getting ready to enjoy a nice sunset before eating a nice dinner. Like I said , the weather couldn't be better. We'll have a great nights sleep. We're going to try this again in the morning and take it from there. It's the last day we ever get in August of 2014 and I'm glad we spent it here.

The smaller fish 20 to 25 pounds are biting 20 pound test pretty good. But please bring some heavy line for the bigger models! 2 yellowtail 18 lingcod 57 rockfish. 8 and half hours of banging our sonar off the rocks resulted in 1 school. Today’s results have zero influence on tomorrow’s.

The day started in the dark with some great fishing on quality yellowtail. After daybreak we still had good fishing on the school grade yellowtail with an 18 lb. average until noontime. And then the afternoon took a powder and we couldn't find anything to catch. The weather offshore is rough but we are hiding behind an island and are in good weather. Dinner was a tasty Cornish game hen, fresh veggies, wild rice and a really good hot brownie pudding cake. Thanks for checking in. Tommy and crew
