puerto rico Fishing Report 2025

Today we caught 2 yellowfin tuna and did not like what we saw offshore. We are going back to the islands starting tomorrow. Bring a 25 or 30 lb flyline setup and a 40 or 50 lb yoyo setup. Passports required !

Hello everyone We are wrapping up our Beck, Wagstaf and Emerson and Friends 5 day trip today. This trip the Joe Beck, Mal Wagstaf and Emerson and friends charters joined forces on this summer time five day trip. We had some great fishing on some great quality yellowtail. Most of the fish were well into the 25 lb class with some pushing 30lbs. The fish were up high and very surface oriented. They were being hooked on the fly line sardine and surface iron. It doesn't get much better than yellows boiling around the boat and chewing on the surface iron. We had very few small fish mixed in with these biting yellows, the vast majority were great quality fish. It was a great relief getting into these big biting fish after a few trying trips with tough conditions. The next leg of our trip was spent offshore and lead to fantastic kelp patty fishing. The kelps we found had great sized yellows on them school size tuna and also some trophy Dorado. We were able to top off our yellowtail count and mix it up with some Dorado and tuna as well. The water was blue, the fish were biting, and the weather was flat calm. Everything one would ask for during an offshore fishing day. ~~Nov. 13
 All I can say is we tried.  The baiting went well last night and we arrived to cow town before sunrise.  Until 3:30 in the afternoon we didn't see much.  We fished hard though once again.  Most stayed at the rail.  We tried 4 anchor jobs, and a bunch of drifts but like I said, until 3:50 we didn't see much.  At 3:50 though things woke up but unfortunately it was short lived and we have nothing to show for it.  It gets dark so early now.  We saw 3 good spots of 200-300 pound tuna blowing out of the water and 1 really good sonar school of 50 pounders but we could get no reaction from them.  At least we got to see them.  It's better than never seeing them at all.

 I felt the vibe on board and I know the passengers want some action so we're going to try and deliver.  We'll be running up tonight and we're going to give "The Ridge" another try tomorrow.  We'll go for action and then we still have wahoo to catch.
        

Capt Ryan Bostian checked in from the San Diego as they wrapped up their trip of 5::30 am to 5:30 pm full day trip, we ended the day with Mexican limits of Yellowtail for out 9 anglers. Yes we went out with 9 anglers, it has been light loads and looks like it will be that way all week. Today was a really nice change of pace as we dropped anchor and never had to move, and we had 1 - 4 hanging at all times today. The fish today averaged from 15 to 25 lb, the flylined baits and the surface irons worked really well today. We will be running everyday this year and the fishing has been really fun. Wish you could have been there, if the boat is still floating then we will be running.

 I forgot to mention yesterday how steamy it is down here.  Steamy, like we're boiling a giant pot of water or something, I can't explain it.  Anyways when you walk out of an air and conditioned part of the boat it's like POW!  Holy Toledo!  But after a little bit you get used to it and it's not that bad until you find some AC again and then come back out and it's like, POW again.  Anyways, we had a little more wind this morning which helped with the kite fishing and it stayed one direction which helped with the anchor fishing.  We had another decent morning.  George caught another over 200 and his bud Craig joined him with a 207.  The sharks weren't as ferocious this morning and this afternoon I'd have to say they weren't much of a problem at all.  We really did a number on the wahoo yesterday because today we only caught a few but thankfully we had a great day on the anchor starting mid morning or after lunch, I already can't remember.

 The boxed and vacuum sealed flying fish from Florida the gang brought down really paid off today.  That's mostly what I did this afternoon was rig flying fish for the kite and help gaff tuna when they needed me. For a couple hours they were hitting the baits on the kite as fast as we could put them out.  Most of what we're catching is in the 100-130 pound class. The big story was Charlie this afternoon.  He caught 3 bigguns.  A 194, 213, and a 204.  A nice afternoon for Charlie.  About half the gang are already releasing anything under 200 pounds.

 For dinner we had a lovely corned beef and cabbage and potato meal.  Afterwards I was waiting for the shower and i noticed all the tuna that was under the boat and I pointed it out to the chef.  So he went down there and sinker rigged a sardine right on top of one of the tunas heads and he got himself a 177 pounder shattering his previous personal best of 35 pounds.  Way to go Mike.  Most people at the time were tying on new top shots on there reels.  They all new what was going on and that they could most likely do the same but nobody did a thing.  Everyone was fished out so that shows we had a good day.  You just can't fish 24 hours a day.

Good eveing friends. Checking in from the bridge in between dinner calls. We started the day shut down on on a few fish marks to see if we could get something to build up and hooked a couple of small grade yellowfin, but it just wasn't the right kind so it was time to pack up and go looking. Shortly after a couple released tuna, we got mobile we swung by a few tuna pens and they didn't really produce. A lot of small yellowfin and aquarium size yellowtail with a couple nicer 25 lb tuna to put a tag on. Too bad a couple hundred more of his buddies weren't tagging a long with him. Tommy got up with me this morning at about 0245 and got busy downloading some awesome water charts that way we could map out our playground for the day. Not much luck at the pens, so off to kelping we went before we started working some warm water edges. We just couldn't seem to find the big boomer that was loaded or catch that school that was out there roaming around. The ocean is a pretty big place when you're out there by yourself. You have your great days along with the slow ones and today it was just one of the slow ones. The guys really hung in there and fished hard though. Charter Master Joe Gigliotti got busy like the Italian he is and cranked out about a dozen handmade pizzas for lunch that were second to none! Every year that's one thing we really look forward to on his trip is the pizza's. He brings all of the ingredients with him and certainly rivals any pizza place that I've been to!

I do have to add, for all of you Mark "The Crow" Clark fans, we actually got him to not say one word all the way through dinner last night. He actually had to use a note pad to communicate! Quite the sight I must say, but today it was back to business as usual...Caw Caw Caw. Keeping the passengers laughing and giving his illegitiment father Kub and Uncle Joe Beck and hard time as always. So tommorrow we're gonna wrap up the trip in the bluefin grounds and I have a feeling it's gonna be game on. Time to get nasty and end with a bang. Drew has to sport the lucky 7-11 hat, Gunny will be in all blue as he always is when we get 'em and Mark, he'll still be talking. Time to shut out the lights and enjoy first watch. Captain Ryan of The San Diego checked in with a trip report for today.  57 Bluefin(15-60lbs) 14 Yellowfin (15-30lbs). About as good as it gets local Bluefin fishing. A 30-50lb bait rod was all you needed today.
