Oct. 13

Well we struck out on the bluefin today. It wasn't a called third strike, I mean we went down swinging but they definitely beat us today. We saw one good school in the dark hours of the a.m. that didn't stick and then found one deal that didn't react all that bitchen after daylight. We only landed five but they were beautiful fish. 35-50 pounders. Our afternoon was spent traveling down. We left that zone after lunch because we didn't have high hopes for the afternoon based on what we and the other boats had seen.

Our weather was good today. Cold, but not a whole lot of wind. We're going to be fishing for yellowfin tuna tomorrow at first light. They'll be a few of us looking around there so hopefully we get them located early.

 

In other news Mark tried to tell me that Steve Nash was as tall as he was and I called him out on it, bet him 20 dollars in which he agreed upon, and then I had to call my lovely wife to get her to Google it. I was right, he's 6'3" and now I'm 20 dollars richer. Here's the thing though, I spent almost 20 dollars in the phone call to win that bet so was it worth it? Absolutely. I would gladly spend more money then I'd win against Mark, he's fat, just to prove my point and make him 20 dollars less rich.

Capt Ryan Bostain checked in from the San Diego the 3/4 day boat out of Seaforth Landing to report that the Yellowtail are starting to bite down at the Coronados. Yesterday we had 96 Yellowtail and today we 114 Yellowtail for 30 anglers, come on down the are biting everything. We are getting them on surface iron, yoyo jigs, dropper loops and fly lining baits, the water is very nice and clean. When you come down make sure to bring your passport as it is required.

Never found the lucky kelp today. Still scratched up a mixed bag in beautiful weather. 18 dorado 27 yellowtail 29 skipjack.

The bluefin fishing has stayed consistent. Everyday we get a few legitimate chances to catch this beautiful grade of fish. Along with the bluefin tuna we have been seeing good sign of yellowfin tuna as well. We have yet to get them to bite but it’s any day now they could get with ! 

11 Yellowtail, 4 Yellowfin and a #147 Bluefin. Nice day for Brandon and his friends. 

I have yet one more opportunity for someone to jump on with us on a great charter. This trip is a 2-day trip fishing Thurs. and Fri. June 19-20. This is a very light charter and only fishes with 12 or 15 people. If you are able to go, you might find yourself becoming a permanent part of a very special charter on a regular basis. Hello good friends and happy Friday to all of you. A short day for us as we only had a few minor jobs to wrap up. We completed the final sanding of the hull and with a slight change of plans to the inside bulwarks, we had to sand the entire inside of the boat but only the stern section from gate to gate. So now the entire outside of the hull, the inside of the bulwarks from the boarding gates aft, and spots forward of the gates are ready to go for the gloss coat. It only took us a couple of hours to square everything away and with a much needed freshwater rinse and cleaning up, our day was complete and we started the weekend off early. Also this morning, the propellers, shafts, and rudders were put back in and on Monday, the painters will be suiting up and applying the gloss coat. Man, what a fantastic day that will be. Not only for the boat but for us as well. Painting days mean very short days for the crew, so it's pretty much a three-day weekend for us and with the NBA Playoffs starting on Saturday, the weekend is going to be a good one. With that said, it's pretty much all downhill from here (knock on wood).

Our haul-out will be about half-complete with the major sanding and painting being finished on Monday. After that, it's on to the bait tank for our next painting project. We still have to sand our mahogany rails, drill and replace the zincs, and a few other jobs to complete and hopefully, we'll be back in the water sometime next week. It's a good thing we got into the boatyard early this year as it's starting to get a little bit crowded down there. Along with a couple of naval vessels, tug boats, commercial fishing boats and some private yachts, the long-range fleet is starting to make their way onto the blocks. With the Red Rooster III splashing down this morning after their stay at Knight & Carver, the Spirit of Adventure and Qualifier 105 were hauled out as well and the Searcher expected to be with us sometime in the next few days, it'll be nice to get back home and finish things up back at the docks. Just like our longer trips in the fall/winter, it's always a relief to arrive back to our slip at Fisherman's Landing. It's also special to tie back up to the docks because that means Mitch's Seafood for lunch a few days a week. Can't beat that.
