Good evening everybody. A fine night of traveling made for good speed as we arrived to our destination first thing this morning with high hopes of finding some wahoo and some tuna. We managed to find some sign of wahoo and we even caught a few while trolling around. Good grade of 'hoo as well, a couple pushing 45 lbs. for sure. Anyhow, the action wasn't RED hot, but we did catch a few skin and we also saw a little bit of sign on the tuna-fish. Although wahoo gets us as excited as any other fish, we just don't see the sign that would lead us to stick it out another day here. With the exception of the few handfuls of wahoo and the few small tuna we caught, there just isn't any spectacular sign of fish here. One thing that is spectacular, the weather. Another day of flat seas, light breeze, and sunshine, and with sunshine comes more bronzing, and a few of us did that too. In time, this area will produce but it's just not right now.

Yesterday morning I was looking at the positions and forecasts of positions and conditions of hurricane Odile and it sure looked to me like we'd be able to go around it that night. So after consulting with Tommy, he did some research and he agreed. And by dark yesterday I was 95 percent sure we could do it. Not enough. We need 100 percent out here. So we headed straight west most of the night until I got an update on the storm at 2:00 am which made me 100 percent sure we could easily make it around the storm. So we hung a left and we've been traveling all day heading for Alijos Rocks. We had some choppy weather this morning but we couldn't tell by our ride because we were going with it. Down swell = a good ride. The weather is nice now that I write this and we're expecting the same the next few days at least.
We usually expect a couple travel days on an 8 day trip and today was one of ours. We did try really hard though to find a nice big dorado kelp but we were unsuccessful. The only kelps we found weren't big enough to hold a school of mahi. So we'll have to do it tomorrow or the next day. Or the next, OK. We'll be concentrating on wahoo first thing tomorrow. We'll be saying our wahoo prayers tonight. I'll check back later.

An 81-pound bigeye tuna that came out of a school of albacore was the first tuna of its kind to come in on a long range boat this season, and it won the Polaris Supreme jackpot for rookie angler Carl Geosana of Whittier at Fisherman's Landing July 14.
Drew Henderson skippered the five-day trip with 24 anglers, and was the beneficiary of a tip from Doug Reed and the Renegade that put him on the albacore, which have staged a badly needed re-bite at about 90 miles from San Diego.
Henderson said a second bigeye, a fish in the 120-pound class was hooked.
"Everybody on the crew pulled on it," said Henderson, "for over an hour. We had it close enough to bring out a gaff once, but it took off again, and finally busted the 30-pound line it was hooked on."
Geosana said he spent an hour and 15 minutes on the 81-pounder.
"I almost went overboard when he bit," said Carl. "He went down, and then he pulled me up to the bow, and I had to get over the anchor there at least ten times. He kept making runs, until the reel got red hot."
Carl said he fished a sardine on a 3/o Eagle Claw hook, and used 30-popund Big Game line, a Penn 500 reel and a seven-foot Ugly Stick rod.
Greg Hannond of Huntington Beach was second, for a 42.6-pound albacore, and Brad Hall of San Diego won third place for a 42.4-pound albie. Skipper Henderson said his anglers had a very good catch of yellowtail and some bluefin tuna and were "‚Д¶just short of limits of the albacore. At least half the guys did get limits."

Fishing was absolutely phenomenal! If the last two day were great, today was even better. We had a good morning bite and then topped off the trip with an afternoon bite that went well into the dark. The tuna were biting the kite and anything else we put in the water. All fish ranged between 175 and 260 pounds. All anglers had a shot at them and a couple landed two. We did however stop to replenish our energy with some of Pedro's great food. For lunch we had tuna with a red sauce and ravioli on a bed of spinach with a cream sauce. Sounds like a weird combo, but boy did it taste good together. And dinner was a great roasted Cornish game hen with all the veggies and potato on the side. In addition to Pedro, I have to say our crew has done a fantastic job. They really work well together. And of course Lon and his group were a delight to have on board. And by the conversation in the galley, they are all planning on returning to this trip next year. Lon is going to open it up so if you are interested call Susan in the office. There will be a couple of spots. And on that note we are heading for home in excellent weather. We will be at the dock Sunday morning. Come down and see this great catch. Meet Lon from OTR. Mike Pritchard called in with this report for the Tribute. "Captain Randy Kramer is running the boat today. He just called in with limits of Yellowtail, 7 Dorado and a handful of Bluefin for the morning. The weather is very nice and they are having good kelp fishing, with a good sign of Bluefin. So we'll keep you updated as the day goes on.
