cabo san lucas Fishing Report 2024

Today we departed on Joe Beck and Mal Wagstaf's annual six day trip, which is our first post-boat work excursion! We left the bay around 11am with a great load of mixed sized sardine and mackerel. Shortly after departing the bay, chef Mike prepared the guys bratwursts with a broccoli salad. We are now working our way south to the yellowfin grounds. We will be in that yellowfin zone by morning, but for the time being we are keeping our eyes out for those giant bluefin. The area we are in there are about 30 or so live bluefin tuna pen boats that are each towing two pens each. We have also seen a couple big blue whales that were heading north-bound. Our first stop of the day produced this 25 lb. Yellowtail.

22 yellowtail 16 barracuda 5 bass. Flyline baits on 25 pound line worked best.

39 yellowfin 69 skipjack. If we get into a hot and heavy stop it is important to work together as a team. The crew and captain are the coaches, the passengers are the players. Communicate with each other. Anticipate that you will be moving around the boat, whether you have a fish on or not. Be aware that you are not the only person on the boat. Listen to the crew. And most importantly have fun. Team work makes the dream work.

Captain Ryan Bostian checked tonight with an update from the San Diego out of Seaforth Sportfishing in Mission Bay.  We have been fishing offshore still.  We have had a lot of ups and downs.  We are seeing schools of Bluefin Tuna of various sizes.

We recommend a 20 pound outfit with 1 or 2 size live bait hooks with a fluorocarbon leader.  Bring a heavy rig to fish the big ones.

RECENT NEWS!!! I WILL BE PUTTING SOME MORE OPEN PARTY TRIPS ON THE APOLLO. These trips will be limited to only 20 people. Can you imagine a boat like the Apollo with only 20 people or less every day. Nov. 12

                I'm sitting here trying to figure out how to start this report.  Well, the bottom line is the cows gave us the slip today.  We got hosed.  The 20-60 pounders were there though.  They weren't shy to nestle up under and around the boat.  They were a little shy to bite though.  We ended up with a few over 1 per rod on the tuna today.  More than half those were 40-60 pounds and the rest were 20 pounders.  Like I said, there were no lack of those fish.  This afternoon we couldn't be sitting any better.  The fish were under, around, and the school was right behind us where our lines were going, then at 3:30, poof, they disappeared.  And the cows never showed.  We looked around the bank for awhile after but there wasn't a scale around anymore.  So we left and we're not coming back.

 

                The weather today was fantastic so we can't blame it on that.  Oh well.  At least we still caught some nice tuna and made jackpot easy to figure out.  We're going to try and catch some bait tonight and fish for all of the above tomorrow.
